Eli Carter's heart still raced from his encounter with the ghoul, the adrenaline coursing through his veins like wildfire. The weight of the fallen branch felt reassuring in his hand as he took a deep breath, the realization of his new reality settling in. He was alive—at least for now. But the world around him was fraught with danger, and it was clear that he needed to figure out how to navigate it.
"Beginning resource gathering tutorial," the System announced, its flat voice cutting through the silence of the forest like a cold wind. "Objective: Locate essential survival items such as food, water, and shelter. You have three days of protection from hostile creatures while in designated safe zones. Use this time wisely."
"Great, just what I needed—a tutorial," Eli muttered, rolling his eyes. "Because I definitely wouldn't want to die right away." He glanced around, taking in the dense foliage and the sprawling trees that surrounded him. Somewhere within the vast expanse of this forest lay the resources he needed to survive, but where to begin when there could be more of those things in there?
"Recommendations for resource gathering include searching near water sources, examining old structures, and foraging for edible plants," the System continued, its tone clinical. "Access your Spatial Inventory to store gathered items efficiently."
"Right. Let's see what I can find," Eli replied, shaking off the remnants of his earlier panic. He set off into the underbrush, his senses heightened. Every crack of twigs and rustle of leaves made him acutely aware of his surroundings. He wasn't just exploring; he was on a mission for survival.
As he moved deeper into the forest, Eli spotted a small stream trickling through the trees, its water glistening in the dappled sunlight. Relief washed over him as he knelt beside it, cupping his hands to take a sip. The cool liquid was refreshing, a stark contrast to the chaos of the past few hours. He filled a makeshift container—a large leaf folded and tied with a vine—and stored it in his Spatial Inventory, marveling at the simplicity of the action.
"Water secured. Next objective: food," the System chimed in. "Look for edible plants or fruits. Caution: some flora may be poisonous. Always verify before consumption."
"Thanks for the tip," Eli said sarcastically, scanning the ground for anything that might resemble food. He spotted a cluster of small berries growing on a nearby bush, their deep red color vibrant against the green of the leaves. Tentatively, he picked one and examined it closely, recalling a vague memory of foraging from nature documentaries. "I hope these aren't poisonous…"
"Warning: Analysis indicates these berries are safe for consumption," the System provided, almost as if it were reading his mind. "Proceed with caution; consume only a small amount initially."
Eli popped one into his mouth, the sweet and tart flavor exploding on his tongue. "Not bad," he murmured, feeling a surge of confidence. He quickly gathered a handful and stored them in his inventory, ready to use as a snack later.
With his basic needs met, Eli knew he had to find a safe place to sleep for the night. The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows through the trees. He recalled the System's warning about safe zones, where he could rest without the immediate threat of monsters for the next three days. "How do I find one of those safe zones?" he asked aloud.
"Safe zones are typically marked by remnants of civilization, such as abandoned structures or clearings," the System responded. "Proceed to the nearest landmark to enhance your chances of finding shelter."
Eli began to navigate through the trees, pushing past branches and underbrush. Just as he was beginning to feel hope, he spotted a dilapidated cabin in a small clearing. The structure was mostly intact, though the roof sagged and the door hung on its hinges, creaking softly in the breeze. It looked like a perfect place to spend the night.
As he approached the cabin, Eli noticed something strange. Shadows moved just beyond the tree line, flickering in the fading light. He crouched low, heart pounding as he peered through the trees. A group of creatures he hadn't seen before ambled past the clearing—slender figures with elongated limbs and hauntingly hollow eyes. Each step they took was deliberate, the ground barely making a sound beneath their feet. They were clearly searching for something, and Eli knew he had to stay hidden.
"Warning: Hostile creatures detected in the vicinity," the System stated, its tone as clinical as ever. "You are currently in a safe zone and will not be targeted until the protection period ends."
"Great," Eli whispered, his eyes wide as he watched the eerie procession of monsters glide by. The creatures were unlike anything he had ever imagined—twisted reflections of humanity, their movements unsettling yet mesmerizing. He felt a shiver run down his spine as they passed, and a small part of him was grateful for the System's protection. He gave it extra time before he decided against stepping outside again.
"Observation: Other survivors may be present. Caution is advised," the System continued, its voice unchanging.
Eli scanned the area from a grimy front window, hoping to catch sight of anyone else who might be seeking shelter. Just then, he spotted a figure moving cautiously through the trees opposite the cabin. A young woman, her clothes torn and dirt-streaked, seemed to be scouting the area. She glanced over her shoulder, eyes darting nervously as if she were being hunted.
"Maybe she knows more about this place," Eli thought, feeling an urge to reach out to her. But he hesitated. What if she was with those creatures? Or worse, what if she thought he was a threat?
The woman moved closer to the cabin, her gaze flickering toward him. Eli held his breath, praying they wouldn't see her. The tension in the air felt thick, and he could see the shadows of the monsters beginning to fade into the trees, but he knew danger still lurked nearby.
"Decision: Engage with the survivor or remain hidden," the System suggested, its voice flat and devoid of emotion.
Eli's mind raced. He could either stay hidden and safe or take a chance and approach her. With the night closing in, and the uncertainty of what lay ahead, he made a choice. "I need more information about this place," he whispered, feeling a wave of fear and doubt wash over him. He left the cabin to pursue her.
Stepping out from behind a tree he barely missed being smashed in the face by a rock, he raised his hands to show he meant no harm. "Hey! I'm not a threat!" he called out, his voice trembling slightly as he broke the silence of the forest. The woman's figure sped away through a few more trees before slowing.
The woman spun around, eyes wide with surprise. For a moment, they simply stared at each other, two lost souls in a world turned upside down.
"You're human?!," she stammered. Eli could see the fear in her eyes, but beneath it was a flicker of hope. He motioned for her to come closer.
"Let's discuss this somewhere safer. Let's go before we're spotted."
