The Night Sorcerer
On a cold, stormy night, the sky was dark and the streets were empty, except for the silent presence of departed souls. The sound of rain striking the pavement echoed through the night, while rats scratched their teeth in the shadows. Most of the town was asleep… but someone was still awake.
Who could it be? A detective? Or a killer?
In one quiet village, crimes had occurred that no one expected. Overnight, several people disappeared—men and women of all ages—and the killer remained at large.
⸻
The Night Sorcerer
The "Night Sorcerer" became infamous months after his crimes began. He killed in the most grotesque ways, treating humans like puppets. He would emerge after midnight, strike, and then vanish without a trace.
But who—or what—was he?
A man?
A supernatural being seeking revenge on humanity?
Or just another psychopath the world would one day unmask?
⸻
At 1 a.m. one night, the police received a call: a body had been found, mutilated in the middle of the street. Detective Will Smith was assigned to the case.
Location: Durham Street, England
Time: 1:00 a.m.
Victim: A young woman in her early twenties named Elizabeth, a university student who lived near Durham University.
When Detective Will arrived at the crime scene, Elizabeth's body lay lifeless in a pool of blood. Her right eye had been gouged out, bruises circled her neck, her middle and little fingers had been severed, her lips were torn, and her legs were broken in horrific ways. Her corpse had been tied up with ropes as if she were nothing more than a wooden puppet.
Close to her body, Will discovered a black card, with blood-red writing:
"When the time comes, you will not know who is your friend and who is your enemy."
Will was known as a brilliant detective with sharp hazel eyes and black hair. Yet even his keen mind found the crime scene unbearable to look at.
"At midnight, the gates of hell are opened."
He turned the card over but found no further clue. The body was sent to the medical examiner for autopsy.
⸻
At the morgue
Dr. Mary, a woman in her mid-thirties, conducted the autopsy.
Mary: "The cause of death was internal bleeding."
Will: "Are you sure? You mean… she endured all that torture while still alive?"
Mary: "Unfortunately, yes. It was sadistic. This killer is either a psychopath—or something worse."
Will: "Perhaps. Either way, I have an investigation to run. See you later."
⸻
At the police station, thirty minutes later
Will stood before the evidence board, deep in thought, until someone slapped the back of his head. Turning, he saw his colleague and friend, Detective Jack.
Jack was also in his twenties, with brown hair and blue eyes. Intelligent but sarcastic.
Jack: "What are you doing, Willy? Aren't you tired of staring at the evidence?"
Will (chuckling softly): "Damn you, Jack. We need to catch this killer fast—there could be another victim already."
Jack (smirking): "Another victim, huh? And what makes you so sure?"
Will: "The brutality. This isn't personal—it's random, psychotic. And he might target another university student."
Jack (mocking): "Oh, come on, Willy. You exaggerate. We don't even know if he's insane. There's no proof there'll be another victim."
Ignoring him, Will sat down with the victim's file.
Jack: "By the way, Elizabeth had three close friends at the university. From what I heard, they weren't exactly innocent. Apparently, they made a lot of enemies."
Will (raising an eyebrow): "Enemies? What do you mean?"
Jack: "You know how college girls form cliques. They bullied weaker students. One transferred schools, another dropped out… and one even committed suicide."
Will froze at that.
Will: "The girl who killed herself. What was her name?"
Jack: "Emily. First year. Too fragile to handle the bullying."
Will (eyes narrowing): "And how did you get this information so quickly?"
Jack (shrugging with a sly grin): "Charisma, my friend. Charisma gets you everything."
Jack tossed three photos onto the desk.
Jack: "These are Elizabeth's friends: Laura, with brown hair and hazel eyes. Maria, blonde with blue eyes. And Marceline, with black hair and emerald eyes."
Will studied the photos.
Will: "Do you think they'll be targeted too?"
Jack: "Who knows? Maybe. Maybe not. Only the killer knows."
⸻
Another murder
The following night at midnight, another body was reported.
Laura. One of Elizabeth's friends.
She was found mutilated, her eyes gouged, fingernails ripped out, her face slashed open, and her body stitched to the wall like a grotesque puppet.
The same black card was found.
"When the time comes, you will not know who is your friend and who is your enemy."
Will's suspicion grew: the killer was targeting Elizabeth's circle of friends—the bullies.
From then, Will and Jack split duties: Will guarded Maria, Jack watched over Marceline.
⸻
Maria's disappearance
At Maria's house, fear consumed her. She locked herself in her room, trembling.
Will tried to calm her: "We're here to protect you. Please trust me."
But suddenly, Maria screamed. From the window, she saw a shadow moving in the garden.
Will rushed outside with his gun. At that moment, the power went out. A man in a police uniform entered Maria's room.
Officer: "Don't worry, miss. Detective Will sent me to escort you to safety."
Maria (crying): "And how do I know I can trust you?"
The officer flashed his badge. Reluctantly, Maria followed him.
Outside, Will searched the garden in vain. When he realized the trick, he shouted: "Damn it! He lured me out!"
By the time Will returned, Maria was gone. Hours later, her body was found hanging from a tree, her neck broken.
⸻
The truth revealed
Autopsy revealed skin cells under Maria's nails. The DNA results took two days. When Mary handed Will the report, his heart sank.
It was Jack.
That night, Will confronted Jack.
Will (furious): "Why, Jack? I thought you were my friend!"
Jack (smiling faintly): "Revenge, Will. They drove my sister to suicide. I made them taste the same pain."
Will: "So you chose torture? Murder? You could've done anything else!"
Jack: "They deserved it. Every scream, every cut. They had to feel what she felt."
Will clenched his jaw, cuffed his friend, and whispered with trembling anger:
Will: "You're under arrest for the murders of three young women. Anything you say will be used against you in court."
Jack only laughed.
Jack: "I left clues for you, Will. Hoped you'd stop me before it was too late. But you failed."
⸻
The trial
In court, Jack confessed calmly to everything.
The judge struck his gavel.
Judge: "For the crimes of premeditated murder, you are sentenced to life imprisonment."
⸻
And so, the story ends.
Crime always comes to light. There are countless reasons for revenge, but murder should never be one of them.
Now the question is… If you were in Jack's place, would you have done the same?
