Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Finding Prey

Looking out from the layers of leaves, the sun was setting the sky into a deep orange shade. Soon this jungle would usher in a new night, a time when shadows would stretch long and many hidden creatures would begin to stir.

A lizard's vision is not the sharpest, but because of Luo Feng's human soul, he mutated after hatching. His vision, hearing, and other senses became similar to those of humans, and he also retained a lizard's unique sense of smell and sensitivity to vibrations. This combination made him far more perceptive than any ordinary lizard his size.

So at this time, he could clearly see the surrounding area without any sort of problem. He observed the ground covered with fallen leaves, the messy grass, and the tall trees whose canopies blocked much of the fading light. At least from his perspective, the world was both vast and full of minute details.

As he observed the surrounding environment, he continuously flicked his tongue, collecting the chemical signals in the air to detect the presence of prey. It was a pity that he didn't find any sort of prey in this immediate area.

Luo Feng, disappointed, hung his head and crawled even further ahead. He started to feel somewhat uneasy. He had never roamed this far from his nest before. He had gone much further than he expected, and if he encountered danger, he wouldn't be able to quickly escape back into the nest to take refuge. But the desire to eat and evolve forced him to continue to take risks. The drive to grow stronger was a constant pressure in his mind.

The black spotted frog that he previously ate had given him a lot of energy, enough for him to spend two or three days without eating, but Luo Feng wanted to grow up as soon as possible, so he had to hunt more prey. He could not afford to be lazy or complacent.

After moving forward another hundred meters, Luo Feng changed direction and crawled towards the right. He couldn't risk continuing forward anymore. He decided he was going to establish his hunting zone in this three hundred meter radius around his nest. It was familiar enough to be somewhat safe, yet still held potential for food.

Suddenly, Luo Feng felt the vibrations of an animal stepping on the ground. Although it was very subtle, his mutated body was particularly sensitive, so the moment he felt them, he immediately became alert. Every muscle in his small body tightened with readiness.

He hid his body in a lush bush nearby and peeked through the gap between the leaves, looking intently at the source of the vibrations.

An adult pheasant dragged his long tail behind him as he slowly walked forward, his colorful plumage being particularly eye catching in the dim light.

Pheasant, omnivore. For plants, they generally like to eat herbaceous plants, seeds, and so on. As for meat, they like to eat insects, earthworms, and small amphibians. Luo Feng remembered the knowledge he learned in his last life. It was strange how such facts came back to him now, in this form.

Luo Feng's current size was not much different from a large worm. If the pheasant finds me, I am afraid that I will be eaten as a snack, he thought with a shiver of fear.

Thinking of this, he pressed himself low and then hid further into the bushes, trying to make himself look unremarkable, like a stone or a lump of dirt. He remained perfectly still, not even his tail twitching.

The pheasant slowly walked over, his claws sweeping the ground from time to time, turning the fallen leaves on the ground, its sharp beak pecking between the fallen debris. Sometimes it picked up an acorn seed, sometimes it picked up a tender white worm. It was entirely focused on its own foraging.

Luo Feng was very successful in hiding; this pheasant did not find his existence from beginning to end. It moved on without ever noticing the small lizard observing it from the bushes.

About three minutes later, after the pheasant walked away, the tense Luo Feng in the bushes slowly relaxed. Crawling out of the bushes, he flicked his tongue and continued to wander around, his senses once again searching for opportunities.

During his search for prey, Luo Feng also saw many other animals. For example,a creature similar to the black spotted frog that he had eaten before. This time, the black spotted frog he met was already an adult, with great strength, and a body length about four or five centimeters. It was simply too big for him to hunt in his current state.

If I want to prey on this frog, I am afraid that I have to wait until my next evolution, he mused with a sense of resignation. He would need more size, more strength, and better weapons to take down such prey.

Luo Feng flicked his tongue in the air, then shrank it back into his mouth, placing it onto the olfactory receptors inside his mouth, analyzing the chemical signals collected. It was a strange way to sense the world, but it was effective.

Suddenly, Luo Feng got excited. This time,he perceived the smell of prey. It was a distinct and promising scent.

Luo Feng flicked his tongue in the air several times, determining the direction of the smell, then crawled over there with renewed purpose. After moving for a few minutes,he stopped, his eyes focusing ahead.

At the moment, there was a group of dense black spots in front of him constantly moving. It was a group of ants returning to their nest, a long line of workers carrying food back home.

Under the observation of Luo Feng, almost every worker ant in this ant colony carried a small piece of food. This was not the thing of Luo Feng's focus though. What caught his eye was a large ant cluster that was tightly tied together, dragging a worm about five centimeters long. It was a struggling earthworm, much larger than any single ant.

Target locked, earthworm, insect, can provide one bio energy point.

The mechanical voice of the Ultimate Evolution System sounded again in Luo Feng's mind, making him unhesitant in deciding to rob this ant group. He directly crawled over, grabbed the worm with his jaws, and took it away. After dragging it a certain distance from the ant group, Luo Feng swallowed it into his stomach. It was a quick and efficient theft.

As for the ants, Luo Feng did not care about them. He had tried eating them before. The biological energy gained by eating ants was too little, and for a group like this with a large number of ants, if he got swarmed by them, he might just capsize this already precarious ship. Being devoured alive by a group of ants didn't sound like a good end, did it? He had no intention of finding out.

After crawling forward for a distance of more than ten meters, Luo Feng stopped, then rolled a few times on the grass, removing the ants from his body. He did not want any of them following him back to his nest.

Counting this earthworm, I got a total of two bio energy points. This harvest can only be considered a pass. I will go for another look around. If I don't find any other prey, I will go back to the nest.

Luo Feng glanced at the sky. At this time, the light had begun to become dim. The sky would probably completely darken in another hour or so. The shadows were deepening between the trees.

Perhaps because of his past life, he did not like to hunt at night, not to mention that there were also many dangers at night. Owls, mice, and even his own peers would be on the move under the cover of darkness.

Therefore, after every hunting trip, Luo Feng would return to his nest to sleep, resting through the night. It was the safest way to conserve energy and avoid unnecessary risks.

As the sky continued to darken, Luo Feng sighed helplessly. Just as he was about to go back to his nest, suddenly, his sensitive sense of smell caught a whiff of something special! It was a rich, promising scent that stood out from the background smells of the forest.

He carefully screened the direction of the smell, then turned his head in that direction. Without any hesitation, he crawled over, his small body moving quickly through the undergrowth.

Two minutes later, Luo Feng's body paused, lifting his head slightly towards the direction of a tree branch.

Located above the tree branch, there was a bird nest perched there. It was a small construction of twigs and dried grass.

When he saw the bird's nest, Luo Feng couldn't help but feel a touch of joy, because he smelled the eggs that came out of this nest. It was a scent of potential energy, of a good meal.

The bird nest was only the size of a bowl. Apart from the eggs, there was no other creature. Obviously, the nest owner was looking for food right now. This was his chance.

Luo Feng climbed the tree, getting into the nest. His claws found purchase on the rough bark, and he moved with a lizard's natural climbing ability. Immediately,he saw that in this nest, four eggs quietly lay there. They were small and speckled, looking delicate and full of promise.

Target locked, sparrow eggs, each providing one bio energy point!

The system's voice confirmed his find. It was a treasure trove.
