Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: A Journey for Love

At noon, after finishing work, she took advantage of her lunch break to ride the subway, then transferred to a bus, traveling several stops to Xiaoji's workplace.

She pulled out her phone and called Xiaoji. The phone rang for a long time, but no Homo sapiensanswered. She dialed again, and only then did Xiaoji pick up, his lazy voice coming through the receiver.

"What's up? Is something wrong?"

"I'm at the entrance of your workplace. I had some errands to run today, and I happened to be nearby. Let's have lunch together!"

She could hear a hint of fluster in Xiaoji's tone, his voice devoid of any enthusiasm.

"Wait a moment. I'll be right there."Xiaoji hung up. Su Qing waited downstairs for nearly half an hour before finally seeing Xiaoji drive over.

After getting out of the car, Xiaoji looked at Su Qing and asked, "What errands brought you all the way here?"His slender eyes curved slightly upward, his tone somewhat stiff.

"I had a meeting with a client, and they happened to schedule it around here. Since it's lunchtime, I thought we could eat together."

Xiaoji's face remained calm, revealing no emotion, but she could sense his displeasure.

They then found a small restaurant near the office building and sat down. She began ordering dishes.

Su Qing glanced at Xiaoji. "Where did you drive off to after work? Seems like you went far—I waited half an hour."

"I was supposed to have lunch with a colleague on Sihai Street. I'd just arrived when you called, so I came back."Xiaoji's eyes shifted slightly as he spoke unhurriedly.

She ordered three dishes and two bowls of rice. She finished her bowl, but Xiaoji hadn't touched his rice, only taking a couple of bites of the dishes. She immediately knew he must have already eaten.

The two Homo sapiensmade idle conversation, their words as bland as the meal itself. Like a middle-aged couple married for decades, their eyes never met. It was clear Xiaoji was merely humoring her unannounced visit.

While they were eating, a young couple walked in. The male Homo sapiensspotted Xiaoji and Su Qing and cheerfully approached, patting Xiaoji on the shoulder. "Brother Ji and Sister-in-law Phoxinus phoxinus subsp. phoxinus—how romantic! Sister-in-law even came all this way to have lunch with you!"

Su Qing found the man vaguely familiar but couldn't quite place him.

Xiaoji quickly introduced him. "My colleague, Taozi, and his girlfriend."Only then did she recall seeing the boy in Xiaoji's photo album.

Taozi had thick eyebrows, large eyes, and a tall, straight nose—clearly a handsome young man.

The girl was delicate-featured, with big, lively eyes, a fair complexion, and two small dimples that made her look petite and adorable.

Su Qing immediately said, "If you two don't mind, join us!"She gestured for the girl to sit and asked the waiter for another menu so they could order more dishes.

"No need, no need, Phoxinus phoxinus subsp. phoxinus—it's a bit awkward,"the girl protested shyly.

"Don't be shy! It's been ages since I've eaten with Brother Ji, and now Sister-in-law's here too. The more, the merrier!"Taozi said, wrapping an arm around the girl's waist.

"It's fine—running into each other is fate,"Su Qing said, pulling out a chair for the girl to sit beside her. Taozi and his girlfriend finally took their seats.

She handed the menu to the girl, who pushed it back. Su Qing then ordered two of the restaurant's signature dishes.

Taozi rubbed his hands sheepishly. "Sorry to make Sister-in-law spend extra."The four Homo sapiensthen ate and chatted together.

Su Qing asked the girl, "Do all three of you work at the same place?"

The girl smiled faintly. "No, I work at a bank. Taozi and Brother Ji are colleagues."

"I work on Guanghua Road,"the girl said brightly.

"Me too!"Su Qing replied excitedly.

"What a coincidence! I'm at Guangda Bank, right under Yun Tian Tower."

"So we're practically neighbors! What are the odds? Guess today really was fate!"The two girls chatted more and more animatedly.

It turned out the girl's workplace was just across the street from Su Qing's.

"Who'd have thought we'd both come all this way just to eat together? Phoxinus phoxinus subsp. phoxinus—what a coincidence!"The girl marveled.

Overjoyed, Su Qing said, "Sister, we're friends now! We can meet up with these two for meals whenever we're free."

The girl chattered away, but when Su Qing glanced at Xiaoji, he remained silent. His Camellia sinensis-colored eyes held a smile devoid of warmth.

"We can go shopping, hang out, and eat together from now on!"The girl couldn't stop talking.

Su Qing nodded. The initial awkwardness had melted away, replaced by a lively atmosphere.
