Chapter 12 - The Taste Of Her Lips

The distant crunch of gravel grew louder, footsteps echoing across the stone courtyard.

Julien straightened, brushing a lock of hair back from his forehead, though the tension in his shoulders betrayed his irritation at the interruption.

Nicoletta felt a pang of disappointment, though she would never admit it. The moment had been perfect, fragile—and now it was about to be shattered.

The front door swung open, and a tall, impeccably dressed man strode in with an easy confidence that filled the room. He had dark hair, mischievous eyes, and a smile that seemed permanently at the ready.

"Julien! My dear friend, you spoil me by keeping me waiting," the man exclaimed, his French accent rolling smoothly over every syllable. He paused mid-step, taking in the scene with exaggerated appraisal. "And who do we have here? Nicoletta, I presume? Julien has told me so much… though perhaps not enough!"

Nicoletta blinked, caught off guard. He extended a hand with a flourish, and the warmth of his charm hit her instantly. There was something magnetic about him, impossible to ignore.

"Carlos," Julien said, his tone a mix of irritation and reluctant amusement. "You're early."

"Early is relative," Carlos replied with a roguish grin, turning to Nicoletta. "And I never arrive without style. Now, tell me, have I walked in on a private symposium of coffee connoisseurs?" He gestured at the window and the picnic laid out before them. "Or is this more… intimate?"

Nicoletta felt heat creep up her neck, and Julien's jaw tightened. Carlos's grin widened, clearly aware of the effect his entrance had caused.

"This is the agent, Nicoletta," Julien said stiffly, though his eyes flicked to hers with something almost unspoken.

"Yes. But clearly the more entertaining of the two," Carlos said smoothly, bowing slightly as if to mock-ceremoniously greet her. "I trust I'm not intruding on… delicate negotiations?" His gaze danced between Nicoletta and Julien, teasing, provocative.

Nicoletta fought a smile.

The man was infuriating, in a completely disarming way. "I think your timing is impeccable," she said lightly, her tone matching his playful energy.

Julien groaned inwardly, but there was the faintest twitch of a smile at the corner of his lips. "Carlos," he said, trying to regain control, "we were about to begin our inspection—"

"Inspection? Pah!" Carlos interrupted, throwing his arms wide, "We must first honor the coffee. And the lobster bisque! Surely you do not expect me to enter this venerable Castello without tasting what has been so meticulously prepared?"

Nicoletta glanced at Julien, who simply shook his head, exasperated but unable to deny the infectious charm of his partner.

Carlos leaned casually against the window frame, eyes sparkling with humor. "Now, Nicoletta, tell me—does Julien always make such elaborate plans just to enjoy someone's company? Or is this a special treat?"

Nicoletta felt her pulse quicken again. The slow-burning tension with Julien had not faded; if anything, Carlos's presence only made the unspoken desire between them more intense, a subtle, charged current that neither of them could ignore.

Julien, standing beside her, lowered his voice. "Ignore him. Focus on the Castello. Afterward, we continue where we left off."

Nicoletta found herself smiling, and Julien's hand brushed hers as he leaned in slightly. The touch was fleeting—but enough.

Carlos clapped his hands with a flourish. "Excellent! Then let us begin! Lobster bisque first, inspections later, and perhaps—if I am lucky—some scandalous stories of the illustrious Julien De La Roche?"

Nicoletta laughed softly, glancing at Julien, whose eyes were a storm of suppressed amusement and something far deeper. She realized, with a thrill, that the weekend at Castello dei Fiori had just become infinitely more complicated—and infinitely more exciting.

The last sip of coffee lingered warm on Nicoletta's lips, and the aroma of the lobster bisque filled the room.

Julien placed his empty cup gently on the window ledge, his gaze lingering on her for a fraction longer than necessary. Nicoletta felt a subtle thrill at the look but quickly masked it with a polite smile.

Carlos, meanwhile, was already inspecting the picnic basket with mock seriousness.

"Ah, the treasures of this Castello! Lobster bisque, delicate cheeses… and no doubt some secret truffles I have yet to uncover," he said with a grin, making Nicoletta laugh.

"Focus on the house," Julien murmured, brushing past Carlos to the door. Nicoletta followed, her pulse still humming from the closeness they had shared over coffee.

They moved through the Castello together, Julien leading the way with measured confidence, Nicoletta beside him, and Carlos flitting between rooms like a bird, offering playful commentary at every corner.

"This drawing room," Julien began, "will be ideal for evening gatherings. Large windows, ample light, and the view of the cove—perfect for my clients to unwind."

Nicoletta nodded, her eyes taking in the tall ceilings, the sweeping lines of the old stone, and the way sunlight caught dust motes in the air. "Yes, the proportions are excellent. And with some elegant furniture and lighting, it will feel warm rather than austere."

Carlos leaned against a doorframe, arms crossed. "Warmth! Julien, you could use a bit of Nicoletta's guidance in the decorating department, or your clients will all shiver in awe of the stonework.

Julien shot him a look of mock exasperation but allowed a small smile.

Nicoletta couldn't help but notice the subtle way his hand brushed hers as they moved past a narrow hallway—brief, almost accidental, but enough to send a flutter through her chest.

They entered a sunroom next, its French doors opening onto a terrace. Nicoletta's eyes lit up. "This could be a dining space in summer. Imagine tables set here, lanterns in the evening, the sea just beyond…" Her voice grew animated as she pictured the possibilities.

Julien listened attentively, though his attention often drifted to her expressions, her gestures, the way the sunlight caught her hair.

Carlos, sensing the shift, clapped loudly, breaking the tension. "Excellent! A visionary indeed! But remember, gentlemen, this castle has secrets—and I intend to uncover them all."

Nicoletta laughed softly, feeling the energy of the trio mingle—Julien's intense focus, Carlos's playful charm, and her own excitement for the possibilities of the house.

They proceeded upstairs, room by room. Julien pointed out structural necessities and practical changes, while Nicoletta suggested touches that would make the spaces inviting.

Every so often, Julien would linger near her, explaining a detail, their proximity electric. Nicoletta caught his gaze more than once, sparking desire between them.

Carlos wandered ahead, then called back with exaggerated curiosity. "Ah! And this is the master suite, I presume? One can almost hear the ghosts whispering secrets of past grandeur!" He turned to Nicoletta with a wink. "Do they frighten you?"

Nicoletta shook her head, smiling. "Not at all. I prefer imagining what could be, rather than dwelling on the past."

Julien's hand brushed hers again as he handed her a measuring tape, lingering for just a moment longer than necessary.

Nicoletta's pulse quickened. The playful interruptions from Carlos only seemed to heighten the electric tension between her and Julien, each glance and touch charged with anticipation.

Finally, they reached the turret room—a space that overlooked the cove from high above. Julien paused, turning to her. "This room… it could be the jewel of the Castello. Your thoughts?"

Nicoletta stepped closer, surveying the view. "It's perfect. Private, full of light, and the view is breathtaking. Any guest would feel privileged to stay here."

By the time they reached the turret room, Nicoletta's pulse was quick, though she tried to convince herself it was excitement of selling the house rather than Julien.

The space was intimate, circular, crowned by tall windows that framed the turquoise cove below. Sunlight poured in, dust motes swirling in golden beams, and the faint scent of the sea drifted upward.

The last echoes of Carlos's laughter faded down the hall, and for a heartbeat the room was quiet.

Nicoletta felt her pulse hammering in her ears, her skin alive with the memory of his near-touch. Julien's gaze held hers—dark, intent, magnetic—and the air between them seemed to thrum with unspoken desire.

He stepped closer, closing the space until there was barely a breath between them.

Nicoletta's chest rose with quick, shallow breaths, every nerve attuned to him. His hand reached up, brushing a loose strand of hair from her cheek, the touch feather-light but sending heat coiling through her veins.

"Nicoletta…" His voice was husky.

She tilted her head, drawn forward, the world narrowing to the intensity of his eyes, the subtle brush of his fingers against her skin. "Julien…" Her voice trembled, betraying the hunger she had barely acknowledged until now.

He leaned in, slow, deliberate, giving her every chance to pull away—but she did not.

Their lips met in a shiver of electricity, soft at first, tentative, testing. Then, as if recognizing the inevitability, the kiss deepened, consuming.

Julien's hand cradled the back of her neck, thumb brushing along her jaw, while Nicoletta's hands found his chest, feeling the strong warmth beneath the fabric of his sweater.

Every inch of contact sparked a fire, sharp and intoxicating, making her heart race and her breath hitch.

The kiss was at once tender and urgent, a collision of restraint and longing, lips moving together in perfect, electric rhythm. Nicoletta felt a surge of heat rush through her, a pulse that seemed to echo in every fiber of her body.

Her senses were alive—the scent of him, the press of his body, the taste of his lips. The turret room, the sunlight, the distant roar of the cove—it all blurred into a heady, consuming moment.

Julien drew back only slightly, enough to brush his forehead against hers, his eyes dark with intensity, his breath mingling with hers. "Nicoletta…" he murmured.

She pressed closer, savoring the intimacy, the closeness, the undeniable pull that had been building since the morning. "Julien…" Her voice was fragile and urgent.

They lingered, suspended in the kiss, the world reduced to the heat of each other's bodies, the magnetic pull between them, the slow-burning flame that had finally been allowed to ignite.

And then—a sudden, teasing clap from the doorway.

"Well, well, well! It seems I have arrived just in time for the grand finale!" Carlos's voice rang out, rich with amusement, completely oblivious to the intimacy he had just shattered.

Nicoletta jumped back, cheeks flaming, while Julien ran a hand through his hair, half exasperated, half amused, a flash of unspent desire still smoldering in his gaze.

Carlos leaned against the doorframe, smirk in place. "I do so enjoy a good house inspection… and even more, a private viewing with such… compelling company."

Nicoletta laughed softly, flustered, while Julien's intense eyes met hers once more—telling her that the moment was far from over.
