Chapter 1 - THE BRIDE

"Every vow sounds beautiful… until the truth demands to be heard."

The first thing Adeline Brown noticed wasn't the flowers.

It was the silence.

The bridal suite overlooking Hyde Park should have been overflowing with laughter, but for one fleeting moment, everything felt unnaturally still. She stood before the antique mirror, her fingers tracing the delicate lace that framed the neckline of her wedding gown.

Today was the beginning of forever.

Or so she believed.

A knock at the door broke the silence.

"There she is," her maid of honour, Sophie, said with a grin as she stepped inside carrying two champagne flutes. "The most beautiful bride in London."

Adeline laughed.

"You're only saying that because you're contractually obligated."

"I signed no such contract."

"You practically did."

The room quickly filled with laughter as the bridesmaids gathered around her, adjusting her veil and straightening imaginary creases in the dress.

"You know," Sophie said softly, studying her reflection, "I've never seen you this happy."

Adeline smiled.

"I didn't think I'd ever find someone who made me believe in forever."

"And Dwayne does?"

"He makes the world feel… quiet."

That answer surprised even her.

As an investigative journalist, Adeline's life was rarely quiet. She chased stories that powerful people wanted buried. Deadlines, interviews, late-night phone calls—chaos had become second nature.

Then she'd met Dwayne Davies.

He had become her peace.

Across the city, Dwayne stood alone inside the groom's suite of St. Andrew's Church.

His tailored navy suit fit perfectly.

His hands did not.

They wouldn't stop shaking.

"It's just nerves."

He repeated the words to himself, though he wasn't sure he believed them.

His best man, Oliver, adjusted his cufflinks.

"You look like you're about to defend a murder trial."

Dwayne chuckled.

"I'd rather do that."

Oliver laughed.

"Too late. In forty minutes, you'll be a married man."

Married.

The word should have brought excitement.

Instead…

His mobile vibrated.

Unknown Number.

He frowned.

Another spam call?

He opened the message.

A single photograph appeared.

Seven university students stood in front of an old Gothic building, smiling at the camera.

Blackthorn University.

Eight years ago.

Dwayne's heartbeat faltered.

He recognised every face.

Some he hadn't spoken to in years.

Some he'd spent years trying to forget.

Another message appeared beneath the photograph.

Do memories ever stay buried?

His throat tightened.

A third message arrived almost immediately.

Congratulations on the wedding.

I wouldn't celebrate just yet.

The colour drained from his face.

His phone rang.

Unknown Number.

He answered.

Silence.

Then…

A slow breath.

A voice, calm and almost affectionate, whispered,

"I've missed you."

The call ended.

"Dwayne?"

Oliver's voice pulled him back.

"You alright?"

Dwayne stared at the blank screen before slipping the phone into his pocket.

"…Wrong number."

The lie came effortlessly.

Too effortlessly.

...

Miles away, rain fell over an abandoned woodland on the outskirts of Yorkshire.

Blue lights flashed between the trees.

Police officers stood frozen behind the crime-scene tape.

A body lay on the damp earth.

The victim's hands were folded neatly across the chest.

A silver wedding ring rested on one finger.

Beside the body sat a cream envelope.

Detective Inspector Blackwood Hawthorne carefully slipped on a pair of gloves before lifting the note from the envelope.

Inside, written in elegant black ink, were the chilling words:

"To my dearest Dee, until the truth do us part."

Blackwood's expression darkened.

He looked from the note to the victim, then back again.

"This wasn't written for the victim," he said quietly.

"It was written for someone else."

A heavy silence settled over the crime scene.

Then Blackwood turned to his team.

"I have a feeling…"

He slipped the note back into the evidence bag.

"…this is only the beginning."

Far from the flashing blue lights…

Church bells began to ring.

Completely unaware…

A bride smiled.

And somewhere in the darkness…

Someone smiled back.
