Chapter 215 - Was I Scammed?

Satoru remained on one knee, his chest heaving, his muscles trembling from the exhaustion of the spar. Sweat dripped from his brow, his breath came in ragged gasps, and his body screamed for rest. The morning sun was now fully risen, its warmth a welcome contrast to the chill of the earlier mist. He tried to stand under his own power, pushing himself up with his arms, his legs protesting the effort. He made it halfway before stumbling, his balance failing, his strength giving out completely.

Shisui walked over without saying anything. His footsteps were silent on the grass, his presence unhurried. He simply extended his hand, palm open, an offer of assistance. Satoru stared at it for a long moment, his thoughts drifting. Years ago, he would have accepted without thinking, would have taken the hand and let himself be pulled up without hesitation. Now, it somehow felt awkward, a gesture that carried the weight of unspoken distance and the accumulation of time apart.

The pause stretched, heavy with the memory of all the conversations that had never happened, all the moments that had been lost to the demands of their separate lives. Then Satoru reached out and took the hand. Shisui pulled him up effortlessly, his grip firm, his strength controlled.

"Still stubborn," Shisui said, his voice carrying a hint of amusement.

Satoru's response was dry, his voice hoarse from exertion. "…You noticed."

Shisui smiled, the expression genuine. "It was hard to miss."

A small chuckle escaped both of them, the first genuinely natural interaction since reconnecting. The ice was beginning to melt, the distance between them slowly closing.

Satoru stretched his sore shoulder, the muscles protesting the movement, the memory of the impact still fresh. He thought that now came the real part; the advanced techniques, the secret training, the lessons that would elevate him to the next level. He mentally prepared himself, his mind already turning over the possibilities, his expectations high. This was what he had been waiting for, what he had earned through the Chunin Exams and the Intelligence rotation.

Instead, Shisui pointed toward an empty section of the field. "Stand there."

Satoru blinked, confusion flickering across his features. He walked to the designated spot, his steps uncertain, his expectations shifting. He stood, his posture relaxed, waiting for instruction.

Shisui circled him, his gaze sharp, his attention absolute. He began correcting; foot placement, shoulder alignment, centre of gravity, breathing rhythm, balance, hand position. Constant corrections, delivered with precision. "Move your right foot half a step. Relax your shoulders. You are leaning forward. You are carrying tension. Your breathing is too shallow. Your weight is too far back." The corrections were relentless, each one targeting a minor inefficiency, each one a small adjustment that promised to accumulate into something larger.

Satoru became increasingly confused.

This… cannot seriously be the lesson, he thought.

His internal frustration grew, the gap between his expectations and reality widening. He had imagined advanced techniques, secret jutsu, the kind of training that would transform him into a formidable shinobi. Instead, he was being corrected on the basics, on things he had been doing for years.

He finally asked, his voice carrying a note of impatience, "When do we start?"

Shisui looked puzzled. "We already have."

Satoru blinked, his confusion deepening. Shisui explained calmly, his voice measured, his words deliberate. "Powerful techniques do not matter if fundamentals waste energy. Every unnecessary movement slows the body. Every poor habit compounds in battle. A shinobi with flawless basics can outperform someone with stronger jutsu." He paused, letting the weight of his words settle. "You do not need stronger techniques. You need fewer mistakes. A good foundation can carry a shinobi to the limits of their potential."

Satoru's internal frustration bubbled up.

Seriously? This is my Chunin Exam reward? Lord Third promised me personal training with Shisui, and I am learning how to stand?

The sarcastic thought followed, Did the old man scam me?

He imagined Hiruzen smiling kindly while secretly assigning him Academy-level exercises, his grandfatherly demeanour hiding a mischievous intent. I fought through the Chunin Exams for posture corrections? Outwardly, he simply sighed, the sound carrying the weight of his disappointment.

The rest of the morning consisted of deceptively simple drills. Tree Movement; running across trunks, stopping instantly, changing direction, and maintaining balance on surfaces that shifted and swayed. Shisui kept correcting tiny inefficiencies, his voice a constant presence, his observations precise. "Your foot placement is wrong. Your weight is shifting too early. You are not using your hips to balance." The corrections were relentless, each one a small adjustment that promised to accumulate into something larger.

Blindfold Exercise; Satoru was blindfolded, his vision obscured, his other senses forced to compensate. Shisui tossed pebbles, their trajectories unpredictable, their sounds a challenge to his hearing. Satoru had to react only through hearing, no chakra sensing, no Sharingan. He missed repeatedly, his frustration growing with each failure. The pebbles clattered against the ground, their sound a mockery of his efforts.

Kunai Timing; Shisui threw practice kunai, not to hit, but to force perfect reaction timing. Every catch had to occur at the exact moment, no earlier, no later. Too early, correction. Too late, correction. The kunai thudded into the training post behind him, their impact a constant reminder of his failures. Breathing; Shisui even stopped combat drills just to fix breathing rhythm, his voice calm, his instructions precise. "Inhale through your nose. Exhale through your mouth. Do not hold your breath. Your breathing controls your movement." Satoru internally groaned.

This man is obsessed.

Eventually, Satoru activated his Sharingan automatically, the familiar red eyes flaring to life, their perception sharpening the world around him. Shisui immediately noticed. "Turn it off."

Satoru hesitated, the instinct to rely on his eyes warring with the instruction. Then he deactivated the Sharingan, its red glow fading. A little later, he used it again, the instinct too strong to resist. Another correction. Eventually, Satoru complained, his voice carrying a note of frustration. "Would not using it improve the training?"

Shisui finally answered, his voice calm but firm. "No." He paused. "Your eyes have become a crutch." The sentence landed harder than expected, its meaning sharp and clear. He elaborated, "You are reacting because your eyes tell you to. Learn to react because your body already knows. The Sharingan should be an enhancement, not a dependency."

The lesson was clear; the Sharingan was a tool, not a solution. Satoru needed to build a foundation that did not depend on it, a base of skill that would remain even when his eyes were closed.

Both sat beneath a tree, the afternoon sun filtering through the leaves, casting dappled shadows across the grass. Simple lunch, no dramatic conversations, just ordinary ones. Topics ranged from Ichiraku ramen to whether ration bars actually tasted worse every year, from mission travel to which villages had the best food. Academy instructors, funny memories of training, small laughs. Several times, one of them almost referenced the Chunin Exams, the time apart, the awkward distance. Both stopped themselves, redirecting the conversation naturally. The ease was returning, slowly but surely, the familiarity of their shared history reasserting itself.

As they resumed training, Satoru noticed something unexpected. This almost felt normal. The realisation hurt, a quiet ache that settled into his chest. If things had been different, maybe this would have happened years ago. He quickly buried the thought, focusing on the training. The past was the past, and the present was all that mattered. Dwelling on what might have been would only distract him from what could be.

The afternoon drills continued, and Satoru began improving. Shisui stopped correcting every few seconds, then every minute, then only occasionally. Tiny progress, but visible. Satoru noticed smoother movement, less wasted effort, faster recovery, and easier transitions. The adjustments were accumulating, the foundation solidifying. He was surprised how much difference tiny adjustments made, how the accumulation of small improvements was building toward something larger.

Late afternoon, training finally stopped. Shisui circled Satoru one last time, checking posture, stance, breathing, and balance. He nodded once. "Good." He paused, then smiled; a genuine, unguarded expression. "Now we have fixed your foundation."

Satoru sighed in relief. Finally, he thought. Now the exciting part.

Shisui picked up a training scroll, its surface worn, its edges frayed. He looked toward Satoru, his expression carrying a hint of anticipation. He smiled. "Now we can begin your real training."
