Chapter 188 - What kind of shinobi do you want to become?

The journey back to the village was relaxed compared to the tension of the trip toward Suna. The Konoha convoy moved at a measured pace, its formation secure, its purpose accomplished. Team Five travelled near the middle, their position comfortable, their conversation light.

Ren talked almost nonstop, his voice bright with excitement. Future plans, spending money, bragging that his teammate had won; he covered every topic with enthusiasm.

"I am going to buy new gear. Better weapons, better supplies. Maybe even a custom sword." He paused, grinning. "And I am going to eat the best food in Konoha. Every single day."

Mariko was quieter, her gaze thoughtful, her mind already turning toward the future. She had watched Satoru's matches, had analysed his strategies, had learned from his techniques. She wanted to catch up, to close the gap between them. Her silence was not discontent; it was determination.

Satoru mostly listened. His exhaustion from the tournament still lingered, a weight that pressed against his shoulders and dulled his reflexes. The burn on his shoulder ached, his eye still strained, and his chakra reserves were only partially restored. But he was alive. He had won. And he was going home.

I guess Ren is going to enjoy this more than I am. Maybe I should hand some to him.

Satoru was thankful that he now had a clan to rely on, but someone like Ren still had to fend for himself. When they first joined Team Five, this was one of the main reasons why they had gotten friends before they had that semi-fallout during registering for the exams a while ago.

Sayuri quietly told Satoru to walk beside her. They moved slightly ahead of the team, their steps synchronised, their voices low. Ren and Mariko naturally gave them space, their conversation continuing behind them, unaware of the weight of the words about to be exchanged.

Sayuri began simply. "Congratulations." Her voice was calm, but there was warmth beneath it. "I was proud of you. You exceeded my expectations."

Satoru listened, his gaze forward.

She continued, her tone thoughtful. "Specifically, your adaptability, your discipline, your emotional control, and your ability to learn during battle. You won because you learned faster than your opponents. That is rare." She paused.

"That means more than public praise."

Satoru absorbed her words, his expression unchanged.

Sayuri's tone became serious. "Promotion changes everything." She looked at him, her pale eyes sharp. "Missions become more dangerous. Expectations become higher. Failure carries greater consequences. People will expect leadership." She paused. "Genin mistakes are forgiven. Chūnin mistakes cost lives."

Satoru nodded slowly. He had known this, but hearing it from her made it real.

She continued, her voice dropping. "You should prepare yourself." She looked ahead, her gaze distant. "Team Five fulfilled its purpose. It was created to produce capable shinobi. Now, you are chūnin. Mariko and Ren remain genin." She paused, letting the weight of her words settle. "Eventually, the team must separate."

Satoru's internal reaction was quiet but sharp. I always knew this day would come. Still… knowing something logically does not stop it from hurting.

He did not respond immediately. He walked beside her, his steps steady, his thoughts processing. Behind them, Ren and Mariko continued their conversation, unaware of the conversation that was changing everything.

Sayuri continued. "Genin teams are temporary. Promotions naturally divide them. Chūnin begin serving village needs rather than fixed squads." She looked at him. "You will be assigned to different missions, different units, different commanders. Team Five will not be your home forever."

Satoru's voice was quiet. "I understand."

Sayuri nodded. She reached into her vest and pulled out a scroll; not a mission scroll, but a personal record. "I have prepared your first professional assessment." She unrolled it, her eyes scanning the contents. "Your strengths: tactical thinking, battlefield analysis, adaptability, emotional reading, information processing, and calm under pressure." She looked at him. "Your weaknesses: chakra reserves, physical endurance, over-reliance on your eyes, high chakra consumption, complex techniques, and limited offensive ninjutsu."

Satoru absorbed the assessment, his thoughts analytical. She is not sugarcoating. She is preparing me.

Sayuri rolled the scroll and tucked it away. "Every elite shinobi develops a niche." She paused, her voice thoughtful. "Assault, assassination, tracking, medical, barrier, intelligence, interrogation, infiltration." She looked at him. "What kind of shinobi do you want to become?"

Satoru was silent for a moment. I have not decided, he thought. There are so many possibilities, and so many threats.

He answered honestly. "I have not decided."

Sayuri nodded slowly. "I have a recommendation." She paused, her gaze steady. "You could become a very capable assault shinobi. Your Sharingan, your taijutsu, your genjutsu; all of it would serve you well in direct combat." She paused. "But I believe that would waste your greatest talent."

Satoru's attention sharpened.

She continued, her voice thoughtful. "Almost nobody can do what you can do. Your abilities naturally suit intelligence work; interrogation, infiltration, espionage, counterintelligence, battlefield analysis, psychological warfare." She paused. "You see people before you see techniques. That is rare. That is valuable."

Satoru's internal thoughts were conflicted. Logically, everything she says is correct. I would excel there. But I remember everything I know about the future. Akatsuki. Madara. Obito. The Nine-Tails Attack. The Fourth Great Ninja War. There will be enemies that cannot be outsmarted forever.

He thought: Intelligence may win battles, but overwhelming strength keeps you alive long enough to use it.

He quietly resolved: I will not choose one path. I will pursue both. I will become an elite intelligence shinobi while also building enough combat power to survive the future.

Several days passed. The forest became familiar; Fire Country landmarks appeared, the gates of Konoha visible on the horizon. The convoy's pace quickened, the journey's end in sight. Everyone relaxed; they were home.

Gate guards recognised them, their voices carrying the news of Satoru's victory. Some congratulated him, their words respectful, their demeanour professional. Nothing excessive, just acknowledgement.

The convoy entered the village, its members dispersing toward their destinations. The Hokage administration was already waiting; senior shinobi, led by Nara Shikaku, welcomed them back. Reports were scheduled for later; rest and medical examinations took priority. The dismissal was efficient and professional.

Ren was already talking about food, his excitement undiminished. Mariko was looking forward to sleeping, her exhaustion finally catching up with her. Sayuri gave Satoru a small nod; Good luck. Then she walked away, her duty done.

Satoru prepared to leave, his steps slow, his thoughts reflective.

"Satoru."

He stopped. He looked back.

Shikaku's voice was calm, his expression unreadable. "The Hokage would like to speak with you."
