Chapter 173 - Lucky Bastard

The five finalists stood at the centre of the arena, their shadows stretching long across the sand in the afternoon light. The crowd's roar was a living thing; a wave of sound that crashed against the stone walls and echoed back, multiplied, intensified. Suna supporters cheered loudly, seeing three of their own remaining; their voices dominated the arena, a testament to home advantage. Konoha supporters were fewer, but their cheers were sharp, defiant, cutting through the noise.

Satoru stood beside Mariko, his Sharingan deactivated but his senses stretched thin. He studied the other finalists; Shigan, calm and unreadable behind his mask; Kaito, his hands resting on his puppet harness, his expression neutral; Maki, her silver eyes gleaming, her red hair catching the light. Three Suna genin, one Konoha kunoichi, and himself.

The odds were against them.

The proctor stepped forward, his voice amplified by chakra, cutting through the crowd's noise. "The next stage will determine the two finalists who will compete in the championship match." He paused, letting the silence settle. "However, with five participants remaining, the structure will differ from a standard bracket elimination that we've had."

The crowd quieted, leaning forward.

"The remaining five will not simply fight a normal bracket," the proctor continued. "The next two matches will decide the two finalists. One lucky participant will automatically advance to the final. The final battle will be a three-way fight between the winner of Match One, the winner of Match Two, and the person who receives the direct advancement."

Murmurs spread through the arena. The spectators discussed the implications; the advantage of the bye, the danger of a three-way final, the strategic possibilities.

Satoru's mind raced, processing the rules, calculating outcomes.

The ideal scenario, he thought, would have been Mariko defeating Maki, me defeating Kaito, and then the two of us facing Shigan in the final. But the three-way final changes everything. Even if I beat Kaito, I could still face Shigan. Or worse, Mariko could lose, and I would be alone against two Suna prodigies.

He looked at the Suna team. Three remaining genin. Better odds. More chances to have someone reach the final.

I might actually have to fight all three of them before this whole stuff ends.

The proctor gestured toward a wooden container at the centre of the arena. "Each finalist will draw a numbered lot. The person with the special number receives the direct advancement to the final."

The crowd's excitement surged. Satoru felt the weight of their anticipation; everyone wanted to know who would get the advantage. Suna fans hoped one of their representatives would claim it; Konoha supporters prayed that either Satoru or Mariko would be lucky.

Shigan stepped forward first. His movements were calm, unhurried, as if the outcome was already decided. He reached into the container, pulled out a folded slip, and handed it to the proctor without looking at it.

The proctor unfolded it. His expression did not change, but the crowd's silence was absolute.

The arena erupted. Suna supporters roared Shigan's name; their voices rose in a wave of triumph. "Shigan!"

"The strongest one goes straight to the final!"

"The victory is ours!"

Satoru's jaw tightened. Of course, he gets it, he thought. That guy is a lucky bastard.

But he acknowledged the reality; Shigan was the person everyone had to beat. He had the strongest position, the greatest advantage, the clearest path to victory. If Satoru wanted to win the tournament, Shigan was the final obstacle.

The proctor raised his hand, silencing the crowd. "The remaining matches will now be announced. Match One: Sarutobi Mariko of Konohagakure versus Maki Arashi of Sunagakure." He paused.

"Match Two: Yamanaka Satoru of Konohagakure versus Kaito Kugutsu of Sunagakure."

The crowd's reaction was immediate. Suna fans became excited; they remembered Satoru defeating Mio, and they wanted revenge. They cheered for Kaito, their voices sharp and aggressive. "Kaito will finish him!"

"Show him the strength of Suna!"

"Do not let another Konoha ninja win!"

Satoru noticed. The crowd was treating the fight as a revenge match, a chance to restore Suna's pride. He remained calm, his expression unchanged.

Let them cheer, he thought. Their noise does not change what happens on the sand.

In the Suna jōnin viewing section, a green and orange-haired kunoichi watched the results with a satisfied smile. Pakura; her arms were crossed, her eyes fixed on her students. A nearby Suna shinobi leaned toward her, his voice low. "Your team has performed well. Three Suna genin reached this stage, and Shigan already secured the final."

Pakura's smile did not waver. She said nothing, but her satisfaction was evident. Her students had proven themselves; Shigan with his Scorch Release, Maki with her Typhoon Release, and Kaito with his puppets. The tournament was playing out exactly as she had hoped.

In the Konoha viewing section, Uchiha Rina turned to Daichi, her voice curious. "What are Sayuri's genins' chances?"

Daichi shrugged, his expression thoughtful. "Mariko has a difficult opponent. Satoru has a dangerous fight. Both are facing Suna elites. At this point, they would be lucky if even one reaches the final." He paused. "Suna has momentum, and they have home advantage. The odds are against Konoha."

Near Ren's medical area, Sayuri and Taeko continued watching. Sayuri's voice was low. "This is going to be difficult."

Taeko's gaze flickered toward her. "For Mariko or Satoru?"

"Both." Sayuri's eyes were fixed on the arena. "Mariko faces Maki's overwhelming strength. Satoru faces Kaito's unpredictable puppet style. Konoha's advantage is gone. Suna has momentum."

Satoru mentally analysed the bracket as he walked toward the exit, Kaito beside him.

Mariko versus Maki, he thought. Maki has overwhelming physical power; her fighting style is direct and destructive. Against most opponents, she dominates. But Mariko is intelligent; she can still win through strategy.

He considered his own match. Kaito is dangerous. Puppet users are difficult; poison, traps, and hidden weapons make them unpredictable. But I have my Sharingan. I can read movements and predict attacks. My chances are better.

He thought through the possible finals. Best case: Mariko beats Maki, he beats Kaito, and the two of them face Shigan. Worst possible case: Maki beats Mariko, and Shigan has support. Worst case: he defeats Kaito, Mariko loses, and he faces Shigan and Maki together in the final.

I cannot rely on luck, he decided. I need to prepare for everything. Assume the hardest battle is coming.

The proctor ordered Shigan, Kaito, and Satoru to leave the arena. They would wait for their fights. Satoru walked away, his steps steady, his mind already shifting toward the battle ahead. Kaito followed calmly, his puppet harness secure. Shigan headed to his viewing position, his mask unreadable.

Mariko remained on the arena floor. She stood facing Maki, her expression calm, her breathing steady. The crowd's roar was a distant thunder; the sand was warm beneath her feet; the afternoon light was golden and harsh.

Maki entered from the opposite side. Her silver eyes gleamed; her red hair blazed; her posture was relaxed, almost casual. She looked like she was enjoying herself.

The proctor raised his hand. The crowd fell silent; the air grew thick with anticipation for the first fight of the second round.

"Begin!"
