Chapter 1 - Demise

Grey Adams is an average man. He goes to work, has a girlfriend, and is mature enough to know when he's wrong. The only problem is, he's a bit too nice. If he's in line before others, and they beg to get in front of him, he'd sigh and make way. This wasn't anything new for him. In fact, he'd been living like this his entire life.

It wasn't something wired into him religiously or even by his parents; he just felt it was the right thing to do, that perhaps all this good karma would allow him an easy afterlife. But due to this strange attitude, he also became too nice to say "No".

This led to a hard school life, as this made an easy passage to bullies and childish kids alike. They would steal pencils from him, copy his work, or even ask him to help tie their shoes. Of course, they could do it themselves, but they just wanted to see if he'd ever say no. Obviously, he never did.

He was stepped on physically and mentally; people always tried to see how far they could push him. To see how much he'd take before he broke. But since he truly believed what he was doing was okay, he never saw it as a punishment. Though at times, it was draining, and he wanted it all to stop, but it never did.

Things really looked up for Grey when he met a girl. She was kind, beautiful, and everything he needed in a person. Some people would claim she was using Grey, as she would always call him when she needed something, would ask him to buy her things at every instance, and was hardly ever physical with him at all.

Grey didn't see this, though. He felt obligated to make her happy, and he wasn't so lustful that he wanted to be intimate with her all the time. They got intimate in bed just once. They kissed rarely and mostly held hands, but for some reason, she did neither in public. Grey lived happily unaware. As they say, ignorance is bliss.

So, it's been 2 years since they've been together. Grey had just gotten off work, and happy as a clam, he drove home. As he pulled into the driveway, he was a bit confused to find his girlfriend at home. She usually was out for work herself, and though he didn't know where she worked, or even if she worked at all, she somehow always brought money home. Of course, for herself, not him or the bills.

He parked and got out, ready to go see her after a long shift. The door was unlocked, which was weird, as Amara was the paranoid type and hardly trusted unlocked doors or windows alike.

Not thinking too much of it, Grey stepped inside, set his keys down, and took off his shoes. He closed the door behind him and went to the bedroom, where he assumed she was, as she wasn't in the living room.

"Amara! I'm home," Grey called out.

Swift rustling and the sound of impatient feet sounded from the other side of the bedroom door. With a raised eyebrow and narrowed eyes, Grey slowly opened the door. Perhaps she was changing?

What met his eyes wasn't anything he expected, not at all.

Amara stood in lingerie; to her side was another man, tall, handsome, and chiseled, the opposite of him. They were putting on clothes, sweat beading down their foreheads as Amara and Grey locked eyes.

"G-Grey... babe, this is... my friend! We were playing Twister. C-Clothes Twister, where you remove a piece of clothing-"

"That doesn't exist..." Grey cut her off.

Amara believed she could lie her way out of it. Grey is so gullible that she thought for a second he would believe whatever slipped from her mouth. But in that moment, a feeling that Grey was unfamiliar with filled him. No, many feelings.

Anger, sorrow, and for the first time in his life, he wanted to be selfish. His eyebrows furrowed, his eyes narrowed in a glare, his knuckles white from squeezed fists. This was rage, not anger.

"Amara...!" He said in a guttural, tear-stricken tone.

Amara stumbled over her pants, trying to reach him, to use rare touch and soothing words:

"Grey... I-I'm not cheating on you. I would never... would never! I love you too much! Far too much! This is just my friend!"

Grey moved away from her. Maybe he would have believed her, but this time, Grey would choose himself.

He shut the door and wiped away the tears welling up in his eyes. The tears kept coming, and he kept wiping them. He grabbed his keys and ran out of the door, quickly starting up the car.

Rain poured now, as if in beat with his emotions. He paid it no mind, as if it wasn't even there. He drove like a madman. To where? He couldn't tell you, because he didn't know. He just wanted to get away, to find himself, to relieve this empty, angry feeling.

He pressed on the gas, not thinking for even a second to slow down. He dodged cars in the way, and as he came to a stoplight, he didn't slow down, because he didn't care to check it. Grey then realized his idiocy and pressed hard on the brakes, nearly flying from his seat due to inertia. He caught his breath, still stuck in the intersection. Horns blew, practically yelling at him to get out of the way. He meant to apologize, but something in him prevented it. Perhaps his anger? He didn't know.

Just then, a truck had come blaring its horn, and with haste, he turned his head to find a semi-truck right at his car, about to bulldoze him out of the way. He tried to go forth, but it was far too late.

In a loud crash and bang, his car was sent flying and rolling. His body was like a rag doll, the way it smashed against the interior of his car. His neck experienced intense whiplash, his legs were crushed, his lung was punctured by a broken bone, and he suffered severe brain damage.

As if to finish him off, death must have flung him from his windshield, and with that, he found himself lying on the harsh asphalt, bloody, battered, and horrendously broken.

He struggled to do everything; breathe, speak, move, but one thing he didn't struggle to do was regret, was rage.

'I spent so long living for others... spent so long doing what was right... for nothing in return. Now I know... nothing is ever as it seems. I'm sorry. Not to anybody else... but me. Myself. For being such an idiot...'

With a single tear falling from his eyes, he closed them, and with that, he took one final breath.
