Isabella's POV

The room was so quiet, I could hear the soft tick of Alex's wristwatch. The jotter lay open before us, the pages splayed like an autopsy. Yvette's hands trembled slightly against her knees; Eilidh's usual smirk was gone.

I could feel my heart racing, but not from fear alone—there was something deeper clawing at me. The same feeling I'd had the first time I read that note in my locker. The sense that I was being dragged, unwillingly, into someone else's story.

"She was," I said quietly, touching the diary with the tip of my finger. "But that's not the only strange thing."

Michael lifted his head. "What do you mean?"

I pointed to the paragraph halfway down the page, where Rose's writing turned jagged, desperate.

He only cares that he'll be paid.

"Here," I said. "She mentions money. George only cared about being paid."

Eilidh frowned. "I don't understand, who...why..."
