Chapter 70: The Cheque Without a Name
(Alexander's POV)
The safe clicked open with a muted hiss.
Metal against metal — a sound so soft it could have been nothing, but in the silence of Alistair's office, it was thunder.
I watched Isabella's fingers hesitate for half a second before she pulled the small door open. She looked back at me once, eyes wide, and then peered inside.
"What the hell…" she whispered.
I stepped closer, careful not to bump into the desk. Inside the safe were neat stacks of cheques and envelopes, bound together with thin rubber bands. Beneath them sat several rolls of bills — thick, crisp, and pale green.
"Those are dollars," I said quietly.
She glanced up. "What?"
"The cash. It's in U.S. dollars." I pointed at the notes. "That's not normal. St. Augustine's runs on pounds. Even donations come through the Royal Bank. Alistair keeping foreign cash isn't just strange, it's fucking suspicious."
