Yesenia's powerful status made Gerardo hesitate to act out. Though anger burned within him, he didn't dare say another word.
Instead, he forced a helpless expression, hoping Nevaeh would notice.
Placing a hand on his chest, Gerardo's voice trembled as he choked up, "Nevaeh, I know it's been tough for you all these years... but do you think it's been easy for me?"
When Nevaeh's gaze met his, his face was painted with sorrow. "For so many years, your adoptive mother has been in charge of everything at home. Whatever she says goes. Even if I wanted to bring you back, she wouldn't allow it. Forget about you, I can't even make decisions for myself."
Nevaeh wasn't moved.
His pain was of his own making. She only had one question. "Have you ever felt sad about Grandma's death?"
Nevaeh didn't care how the family treated her. The only ones she truly considered family were Grandma and the others who had stood by her.
