The bell rang loudly, and the school hallway was full of noise. Students walked fast, their backpacks bouncing on their backs. Everyone was trying not to be late for class.
I held my bag tightly, feeling the weight of my books. With my books in my bag, I also carried hidden worries . This school year was different. Something was about to happen.
As I walked, I saw a group of students whispering near the lockers. One of them looked at me and smiled like she knew something special. Her name was Tina. I knew she wasn't the type to joke around. Something was up.
I moved closer, pretending to be interested in rearranging my books, but really, I was listening
"They say Miss Carter is hiding something in classroom 5B," one student said quietly. "Like secret papers or notes."
I stopped. Classroom 5B was off-limits after school hours. I passed that door many times without thinking. Now, it felt like a locked box with a big secret inside.
Before I could think more, the bell rang again, and we all rushed to our seats.
Sitting in row five, I opened my notebook, but my mind was full of questions. What if the rumor was true? Why wasn't anybody else talking about it?
Miss Carter came in, smiling, but her eyes looked different, like she was hiding something.
She said, "Good morning, class," in a calm voice, then leaned in and whispered, "Stay alert. Sometimes lessons come in surprising ways."
I felt my heart race. This year, it wasn't just lessons—there were lies too.
