Chapter 46 - When the Heart Turns Dark, the Eyes Turn Red

Here's your passage with dialogue wrapped in quotation marks:

Multi Size Technique. Human Boulder.

Shadow Possession.

On a training field inside the Mirror World, Shikamaru and Choji's data bodies snapped into their signature combo. Shikamaru's shadow stretched like a rope and lashed around Choji, who swelled into a spinning boulder and thundered straight for Naruto.

Ever since Flying Thunder God works in here, some fights got a little dull.

Watching the attack close in, Naruto spoke lightly, flicked his kunai, and vanished.

A wet thud rang out.

Far across the field, Shikamaru jerked as a kunai wrapped in pale blue chakra burst through his heart from behind. He dropped from the match. Choji, freed from the shadow's control, kept rolling along the old line and smashed into a wall. His Multi Size collapsed. He had barely found his feet when Naruto appeared in front of him and drove a kunai into his throat.

The bout ended.

Congratulations. You have obtained Yin nature chakra.

Congratulations. You have obtained training experience for the Multi Size Technique.

At the chime, Naruto opened the floating panel without a ripple and tapped the portrait of the Third Hokage.

If Earth nature would not drop from Shikamaru, then try the Professor who mastered all five basic natures.

With sync past twenty percent, the Mirror World finally allowed Flying Thunder God and showed each puppet's chakra attributes. Many still lacked data. His father remained locked. The ones he could fight had clearly leveled up and no longer moved like stiff dolls.

Filtering targets showed Shikamaru did carry Earth nature. Several bouts later, Naruto kept pulling Shadow Possession or Yin nature instead.

Not a waste. The genjutsu training he had taken from Uchiha Shisui finally had a stage. Other than Earth, Naruto now held Wind, Fire, Water, Lightning, Yin, and Yang. Six flavors of chakra turned within one body.

The Third's puppet had no gaps, and he was the Professor. The odds of Earth nature here were high.

As the new challenge spun up, Naruto reappeared on the field while the Third's silhouette thickened from haze to solid. Naruto raised a hand to plant a mark before the puppet could react.

Kurama's voice rolled through the seal.

"Naruto, school is out. Those two brats are staring right at you."

"I know."

Naruto slipped out of the Mirror World. The instant he came to, Shikamaru and Choji were crowding him on both sides.

"What are you two doing?"

Shikamaru's eye twitched but he said nothing. Choji blurted with bright curiosity. "Naruto, how do you do it?"

"How do I do what?"

"Sleep." Choji waved a hand in front of Naruto's eyes. "Shikamaru has been studying you for days."

Naruto turned, met Shikamaru's gaze, and asked, "You are studying me?"

"That is right. I have been observing you.

"In class I used to think you were spacing out. You only woke to the bell or when the teacher yelled your name.

"But the Academy is being rebuilt. There is no bell here, and teachers are not calling roll. Yet you wake only at noon dismissal and again at evening dismissal.

"So I reached a conclusion. You sleep with your eyes open during class."

Blue eyes glinted. After a breath, Naruto nodded. "You are right."

Shikamaru brightened. "Then teach me."

Choji's ears perked.

Naruto shook his head. He glanced at a certain student walking away alone and smiled. "Innate talent. I cannot teach it."

Shikamaru slumped, glanced at his father in the distance, pushed off the ground with one hand, and stood. "What a drag. I am heading home. The Academy reopens tomorrow."

Choji wore the same long face. He waved to Naruto and left with his father.

The makeshift schoolyard emptied. Naruto rose softly, ready to head a certain way, then felt a gentle pulse behind him. Hinata and her escort still stood there.

He turned. Hinata lowered her head at once.

"Lady Hinata, he is waving to you."

"Naruto kun."

She peeked up. Naruto raised a hand from afar. She flushed and waved back with all her might.

After parting from Hinata, Naruto climbed a hillside. Below, Sasuke sat on a pier by the lake, a lone figure drawn long by the sunset.

"Naruto, why are you staring at Sasuke?"

Minato could not guess his son's aim and finally asked.

"Father, I am taking you to see Uchiha Itachi's newest synced data. Kurama, you come too."

No watchers nearby. Naruto brought Minato and the Nine Tails into the Mirror World.

A notice had just arrived. Itachi's data had updated again. That meant he had already met Pain.

Sure enough, the moment the red cloud cloak and the figure called Pain appeared in the footage of Itachi joining Akatsuki, Kurama lost composure.

"Impossible. How does that one have the Rinnegan?"

Crimson pupils narrowed and flared. Fangs bared in disbelief.

Minato was shaken as well. That young man named Pain carried the legendary eyes said to belong to the Sage of Six Paths.

"Father, Kurama, you both watched Itachi's departure memories earlier." Naruto swept a hand, shifted them from Mirror World to the sealing space, and continued. "Akatsuki's true master is the mysterious man who works with Itachi, the one calling himself Uchiha Madara.

"He is also the one who manipulated Kurama back then and sparked the Nine Tails disaster. Pain is only his puppet."

Minato nodded, gaze heavy. Pain's ambition rang clear. Their endgame was to replace the five great nations and rule the shinobi world under Akatsuki.

Kurama stayed silent. Its mind spun and its urgency spiked.

In that brief flash of footage, it was sure it had seen the husk of the Ten Tails.

"Naruto, whenever Uchiha Itachi's data updates, bring me in at once." Kurama's tone was iron. "I need to confirm some things."

"Okay."

Naruto agreed and left the sealing space.

He knew why Kurama suddenly cared this much about Itachi's track. He had seen the same thing. Now it was time to talk to Sasuke.

Jiraiya had been assigned to dig into Akatsuki. That meant Sasuke might become Naruto's second safety line.

Confirming no one was heading this way, Naruto followed the path to the water. Sasuke had not moved. He was folded on the pier, head buried in his knees.

A plank creaked.

Sasuke sprang up and wheeled around. Only now did he notice someone behind him.

"You." His face iced over. "What are you doing here?"

Naruto did not answer right away. He paced up to five meters away and asked a different question. "Have your eyes opened yet?"

"If you came to mock me, you will pay for it."

"Oh." Naruto's voice was calm. "You are not even worth killing. What price could you make me pay?"

"Bastard."

Rage twisted Sasuke's face. Naruto's words dragged Itachi's shadow up from the depths. In one motion he ripped two shuriken from his pouch and whipped them forward.

Metal rang.

Naruto did not budge. A casual flick sent two shuriken to meet them midair. Both pairs clanged away into the lake.

Sasuke had already lunged. His fist swept for Naruto's cheek. Before the strike landed, his wrist stopped cold in an iron grip.

A second hand clamped his throat. The world flipped. Wood groaned. Sasuke crashed onto the pier hard enough to see stars.

"Uchiha taijutsu is a joke."

Naruto watched Sasuke's eyes roll back and let go.

"You little…" Sasuke coughed and choked instead of finishing the curse.

"Keep dragging your breath and your body along then."

Naruto shook his head and started up the slope.

"Ah. Ah. Ah."

The words sparked tinder. Sasuke roared raw, found strength from nowhere, and flew through hand signs.

Naruto turned, a smile tugging at his mouth. Now it was getting interesting.

"Fire Style. Great Fireball Technique."

"Fire Style. Great Fireball Technique."

"What?"

"He can use Great Fireball too. When did he learn that?"

Sasuke's eyes flickered clear for an instant. He had not seen Naruto form a single seal.

The fireballs collided. Two blazing suns slammed together. Sasuke's sphere staggered and shrank, spent and starving. Naruto's swelled and crushed forward with overwhelming force.

Sasuke's pupils tightened. With a splash, he dove into the lake.

He broke the surface, sputtering, and saw two feet waiting on the water.

"Do you want revenge?"

Sasuke tilted his head back, stunned by the calm face above him.

"Your Great Fireball is so feeble it does not even qualify to stand before me." Naruto stepped a few paces, sprang to the pier, and set down a scroll. "You have one night to master the technique on this scroll.

"Once you do, meet me tomorrow at this time where we first crossed paths."

Sasuke stared at the scroll and shouted from the water. "Who are you?"

"Who else could I be?" Naruto paused at the end of the pier. "Do you know why your eyes have not opened yet?"

A pale face flashed through Sasuke's mind. Lost and hurting, he forced the word out. "Why?"

"Because your heart is not dark enough."
