Chapter 56 - Season 2 — Episode 7 “Public Record”

Level: 25 — Structural Sovereign II

Field Radius: 10 Meters

11:03 AM — City Hall Press Conference

Flashes.

Cameras.

Microphones.

A city councilwoman stood at the podium.

Behind her:

Police chiefs.

Emergency officials.

Two uniformed hunter representatives.

"We are opening a formal investigation," she announced,

"into the entity known publicly as 'The Metal Sovereign.'"

Screens lit up behind her.

Footage from the riot.

Zack walking through flames.

Fire escape straightening.

Brick hitting his shoulder.

They slowed it down.

Zoomed in.

Framed it differently.

"He demonstrated the ability to alter infrastructure without authorization."

Carefully worded.

Not "saved."

Not "protected."

Altered.

"Until we understand the full scope of his abilities," she continued,

"we must assess public safety implications."

That's the key phrase.

Public safety.

Which legally allows containment review.

Hunter Influence

The senior hunter stood off-camera, watching.

He didn't need to accuse Zack.

He just needed oversight.

Oversight leads to regulation.

Regulation leads to restriction.

Restriction leads to conflict.

If Zack refuses regulation—

He looks dangerous.

If he accepts—

He submits to political control.

Win-win.

Cathedral Rooftop — Reaction

Seris lowered the projected press feed.

"They're pushing civilian oversight."

Darius nodded.

"That gives hunters legal extension."

Zack leaned against the stone railing.

"They want me in a room."

"Yes," Darius said.

"With controlled lighting. Controlled narrative."

"Questions designed to corner you."

Seris looked at him carefully.

"If you refuse to appear…"

"I confirm suspicion," Zack finished.

"If I appear…"

"You legitimize their jurisdiction."

Silence.

System flickered faintly:

HUMAN STRUCTURAL SHIFT

POWER TRANSFER ATTEMPT: BUREAUCRATIC

Not density.

Not blood.

Structure of authority shifting.

The Offer

Later that afternoon—

An official summons arrived.

Not hostile.

Polite.

"Voluntary Appearance Request."

They want him in public.

On record.

Under oath.

Under lights.

Hunters providing "security."

Zack stared at the document.

"They can't contain me," he said calmly.

"That's not the goal," Darius replied.

"They want you defined."

Defined things are easier to regulate.

The Strategic Risk

If Zack speaks publicly—

He becomes visible authority.

Ranked vampires may align openly.

Public fear may spike.

Council may accelerate fracture.

Custodians may reassess anomaly thresholds.

If he stays silent—

Hunters shape the narrative alone.

Seris crossed her arms.

"This isn't about power anymore."

"It's about legitimacy."

Zack exhaled slowly.

"I didn't ask to be visible."

Darius gave him a level look.

"You became visible when you prevented collapse."

The Quiet Choice

Zack looked out at the city.

People walking.

Cars moving.

Normal life continuing.

If politics spiral—

It's not ranked who suffer first.

It's civilians.

He turned back toward them.

"I'll go."

Seris' eyes narrowed slightly.

"Publicly?"

"Yes."

Darius studied him.

"You understand they'll try to corner you into an oath?"

"Yes."

"They'll ask if you can control other vampires."

"Yes."

"They'll ask if your evolution spreads."

Zack's steel faintly darkened.

"I'll tell the truth."

Silence.

Sometimes truth destabilizes systems more than lies.

Final Shot

City Hall interior prepared for hearing.

Media frenzy building.

Hunters positioning cameras carefully.

Council watching from shadows.

Custodians observing silently.

System pulsed softly in Zack's vision:

POLITICAL CONVERGENCE EVENT DETECTED

CASCADE RISK: NON-STRUCTURAL

Season 2 just shifted again.

Not violence.

Not riots.

Narrative war.

And tomorrow—

Sovereign walks into the light.

Fade out.
