Chapter 10 - Chapter Ten: The Final Trial and the Dawn of a New Life

On Monday morning, the San Francisco Superior Court gleamed under the warm sun, its white marble façade solemn and imposing.

Luna stood at the courthouse steps in a perfectly tailored black suit dress, her hair swept back into a low, elegant bun. Around her neck rested the pearl necklace her mother had given her years ago, a gift once meant for marriage—symbolizing "resilience and rebirth." Today, it lent her endless strength.

Beside her stood Noah, holding a leather briefcase filled with trial documents. His voice was steady, resolute. "Don't be nervous. We've prepared for everything."

Luna nodded, taking a deep breath. The cool breeze carried a faint chill, but nothing could disturb the calm she carried inside. Since the night she discovered Ethan's betrayal, since that rain-soaked evening when she decided to divorce him, she had fought, stumbled, endured. Today, justice would finally arrive.

At eleven a.m., the trial began. Luna followed David, her lawyer, into the courtroom. On the benches sat Mia, who had rushed from Los Angeles to support her, and Chen Xi, clutching a small sketch she planned to gift Luna afterward. Their presence warmed her heart; she gave them a gentle nod.

The doors swung open again. Ethan shuffled in, escorted by two officers. He wore prison garb, his hair unkempt, his once-charismatic face now gaunt and hollow. At the sight of Luna, something flickered in his eyes—anger, resentment, even a shadow of guilt—but it was quickly buried under cold indifference.

The judge's gavel struck, and the trial commenced.

David rose, his voice calm but firm. "The plaintiff, Luna Chen, married the defendant, Ethan Ward, five years ago. During their marriage, she abandoned her own career ambitions to support his. In return, he not only committed infidelity, but also willfully transferred marital assets and engaged in financial fraud, tax evasion, and other unlawful acts, gravely infringing upon the plaintiff's legal rights. Today, we request that this court dissolve their marriage, equitably divide marital assets, and pursue legal responsibility for the defendant's crimes."

No sooner had David finished than Ethan's attorney jumped to his feet. "My client admits to marital discord, but denies any deliberate concealment of assets. The transfers were merely 'temporary measures for company liquidity.' As for fraud—baseless accusations! The so-called evidence is dubious at best. Moreover, my client argues that the plaintiff failed in her duties as a wife, offering insufficient support to his career, and thus should not be entitled to excessive property division."

Mia's fists clenched tight in the gallery. Chen Xi laid a calming hand over hers. Luna, meanwhile, sat steady and poised. She had expected lies, but she also had the truth—and the evidence to prove it.

The evidentiary phase began. David methodically presented each piece: Ethan's bank transfers to Jack's name, the nominee agreement Jack signed, dashcam audio of Ethan and Chloe, Emma's falsified financial reports. Each item had been authenticated by professionals—legitimate, irrefutable.

When the recording of Ethan threatening Jack echoed through the courtroom—"If you dare testify against me, I'll make sure you never work in Silicon Valley again!"—the room fell silent. The judge frowned, jotting sharp notes.

Ethan's lawyer tried to claim the tape was doctored, but David immediately countered with the full recording and an expert's verification report. The defense was left speechless.

Next came Jack's testimony. Nervous but determined in his dark suit, he recounted how Ethan had forced him to sign the nominee agreement, threatened him into silence, and ultimately locked him in to prevent him from testifying.

"For a long time I kept quiet out of fear," Jack admitted, voice trembling but resolute. "But I've realized—justice should never be buried by fear."

Ethan's face twisted in rage, but under the judge's gaze and the watchful eyes of the officers, he didn't dare lash out.

Finally, Emma appeared by video link, masked and in sunglasses for safety. She displayed emails and recordings of Ethan's orders to falsify company accounts.

"Ethan instructed me to cover losses as profits, to forge contracts and deceive investors," she testified. "When I refused, he threatened to fire me and withheld my wages."

Her words landed like a hammer. Asked by the judge if he had any rebuttal, Ethan sat in silence, trembling, before finally muttering, hoarse: "I… I admit it. I moved the assets. I told Emma to cook the books."

The courtroom erupted. Ethan's lawyer turned pale, utterly defeated.

By three p.m., the judge delivered the verdict:

"Defendant Ethan Ward committed infidelity, maliciously transferred marital property, and engaged in financial fraud, tax evasion, and unlawful detention. Evidence is conclusive. The court rules as follows:

The marriage between the plaintiff, Luna Chen, and the defendant, Ethan Ward, is hereby dissolved.

The defendant must transfer 50% of marital assets to the plaintiff, including the San Francisco villa, $2.5 million in joint savings, and 5% of Nova Tech shares.

The defendant shall pay $1 million in damages for emotional distress.

The defendant's fraudulent and criminal conduct will be transferred to relevant authorities for further prosecution."

The gavel struck. "This case is closed."

Tears streamed down Luna's cheeks—not of sorrow, but of release, of joy. In the gallery, Mia and Chen Xi were smiling through their own tears. Noah leaned close, resting a hand on her shoulder. "Congratulations, Luna. Justice is here."

Outside, sunlight poured over her like a blessing. Mia rushed forward, hugging her tight. "You did it! You won!"

Chen Xi stepped up, offering a painting. "This is for you. I call it Rebirth. May your days ahead bloom like this sunflower—always facing the sun."

The sunflower on the canvas glistened with dew, brimming with vitality and hope. Luna clutched it close, gratitude flooding her chest as she looked at Mia, Chen Xi, and Noah.

"We should celebrate," Noah suggested with a smile. "I know a great restaurant. Let's go eat and relax."

"Yes!" Mia chimed in. "And we need to talk about Elena's investment—our Luna Art Studio is about to launch!"

Luna's radiant smile returned at last. The grueling months of litigation were over. Ethan had been judged. And her life was finally ready for a new chapter.

Over dinner, Mia shared updates: "Elena's investing half a million. She even found us a 2,000-square-foot office in L.A.'s art district, amazing natural light. We can sign the lease next month. Oh—and Chen Xi's joining as a contracted artist. Her Flowers in the Mirror series was such a hit, galleries are already lining up. Our studio's off to a strong start."

Luna's eyes sparkled with anticipation. She turned to Noah, who was watching her with unwavering support. "Noah, I wouldn't have made it here without you."

He took her hand, his voice low and steady. "I told you—I'll always be here. In your work, in your life. Always."

Looking into his eyes, Luna felt her last defenses melt away. She nodded gently. "Then let's walk this path together."

After dinner, Noah walked her to the hotel. At the entrance, he pulled a small jewelry box from his pocket. "This is for you. A gift—for winning your freedom, and… for us."

Inside was a simple silver ring, engraved with two letters: L and N.

"I hope this ring can mark our future," Noah said nervously. "But if you're not ready, I'll wait."

Luna slipped it onto her finger. Perfect fit. She looked up, her smile radiant. "I am ready, Noah. Thank you for waiting. For walking with me into the future."

Noah pulled her into a tight embrace, his heart swelling. This woman, who had survived betrayal and cruelty, stood stronger, brighter than ever. And he would cherish her for the rest of his life.

Back in her room, Luna gazed out at San Francisco's night skyline, the city lights shimmering like a sea of stars. She touched the ring, then turned to Chen Xi's sunflower painting. Hope filled her chest.

She texted her mother: "Mom, we won. I can finally start fresh. Next month my art studio launches. Once I'm settled, I'll bring you here to live with me."

Grace replied almost instantly, attaching a photo of sunflowers in her garden. "My daughter has found her happiness again. Sunflowers symbolize hope—may your life always be full of sunlight."

Warm tears blurred her eyes. The past was behind her. Ahead stretched a life full of promise.

That night, lying in bed, memories washed over her: the passion of her college years, the despair of her marriage, the fire that fueled Elena's exhibition, Noah's steady presence, her mother's unwavering love. Each piece like a pearl, strung together into a necklace that told her story—of struggle, of resilience, of rebirth.

This wasn't an ending. It was the true beginning. She would forge ahead in art, building exhibitions, supporting women artists, creating beauty. She would walk beside Noah, weaving love and life together. And she would tell her story to other women—that even in pain, even in loss, hope and dreams must never be abandoned. Because the power of rebirth is always in your own hands.

Outside, stars gleamed, moonlight spilling through her curtains. Luna closed her eyes, lips curved in a smile. Her future stretched before her like the night sky—vast, dazzling, full of infinite possibility.
