Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Getting rich and acting as a spectator

The next day, Lukas was reading a newspaper when something caught his eye: a gas explosion had happened near the factory close to his house.

Almost always the same excuse when a Beyonder fight happens, Lukas thought.

He put the newspaper down, picked up a quill, and after a few seconds began writing:

Today, Duke Negan sent out invitations to his ball, which will happen on Thursday. Along with the invitation, he also sent 5,000 pounds to each person invited. One of those people was Arthur—Lukas, the owner of this quill.

On Thursday, during the ball, an assassination attempt will be made on Duke Negan. The assassin will be a Sequence 6—Baron of Corruption. While they are fighting, one of the guests, a Sequence 9 Apprentice, will be tasked with releasing a gas that would kill almost everyone. However, Lukas the owner of the quill will discover this person before the gas is released. and because Lukas saves their lives, they will be very grateful and present him with gifts.

This is a reasonable development.

After finishing, he leaned back in his chair, relaxing until words appeared in the air:

You really are desperate for money.

"Well, at least I have a lot of ways to make money unlike Klein. I'm pretty sure Sefirah Castle can't produce money," Lukas said.

At that moment, he heard a knock at the door. When he opened it, he found a note and a box on the ground. He brought them inside and placed them on the table.

The note was an invitation to Duke Negan's party.

Honorable Arthur, you are invited to Duke Negan's party that will take place in two days, at 12:45. Duke Negan hopes you will attend.

When he finished reading, Lukas opened the box. Inside were stacks of 10 pound notes, totaling 5,000 pounds. A smile spread across his face.

A few minutes later, he took 100pounds and left the house. After a short walk, he stopped at a shop selling canes, clothes, and other fine goods.

As he entered, a young woman slightly older than him approached.

"Sir, may I ask what you're interested in?"

Lukas thought for a second before replying, "What is your most expensive cane?"

The lady hesitated before smiling politely. "Our most expensive cane costs fifteen pounds. But… judging by the way you're dressed, I don't think you can afford it."

Lukas remained calm. "I'll take that cane—and your most expensive suit."

A shocked expression appeared on her face. "Y-Yes, sir… That will be fifty-five pounds."

Minutes later, Lukas left the shop with a gold-tipped cane and a black suit. As he walked down the street, he noticed a large crowd.

An elderly couple strolled hand-in-hand. Children played. A middle-aged couple haggled over goods. Then Lukas noticed a family of four—each of them wearing a crystal monocle over their right eye.

Wait a minute…

A chill ran down his back. Sweat beaded on his forehead. The family turned their heads, sensing his gaze. All four smiled at him—then, after a few seconds, looked away and continued walking.

Only once they were gone did Lukas manage to calm himself. Even then, it took some time before his nerves settled completely. Eventually, he walked home.

The moment he returned, he went straight to the table.

"Hey, Quill—I just met Amon."

Words appeared in the air:

I know that you met Amon.

"How?" Lukas asked.

The words shifted:

You see, you are my owner. That means I can sense whenever you feel fear—or other strong emotions. I can also see what you see whenever I want. I hope that explains it.

"I see…" Lukas muttered.

After a few more minutes of conversation, he checked his condition and noticed the potion had digested slightly.

Meanwhile, at the headquarters of the Church of the God of Steam and Machinery in Backlund, someone was standing before Horamick Haydn, Archbishop of Backlund's diocese. The man was Captain of the Machinery Hivemind—Christin.

"Sir," Christin said, "I would like to ask Great Arrodes some questions. It's related to the last case. We met a person who calls himself Arthur, but… something about him feels wrong. Yet none of our divinations succeeded."

Horamick smiled gently. "No problem. Ikanser Bernard will lead you to Arrodes' room."

A few minutes later, Ikanser and Christin entered a chamber. At its center stood a silver mirror, its back engraved with ancient patterns, an eye-shaped design etched into each side.

Christin slowly approached.

"Great Arrodes," he said, "I want to ask a question. Who is Arthur the person connected to the last case at the secret gathering?"
