Chapter 168 - Chapter 169: Intermediate Alchemy

"You should write that down…" Snape said, unusually chatty.

"Severus, Sean Green is enough. He's not anyone's shadow—he shouldn't be Sean McGonagall," Minerva McGonagall snapped, a hint of irritation in her voice as they left the fifth-floor corridor.

"Well, then, tomorrow he'll be Sean Snape," Snape replied, his lips curling into a cold smirk.

"Don't even think about it," McGonagall shot back, her face expressionless. She clutched a neatly wrapped cookie and hurried off.

In the corridor, Sean felt he was getting the hang of transforming from "self" to "living creature." Ever since he started using his transformation cookies, his understanding of cats—and the willpower needed for the spell—had skyrocketed.

This made him even more excited for the Christmas weekend, when Dumbledore himself would teach him about Animagus transformation. If things went quickly, he could master it in a few months—maybe even just one. Still, he couldn't quite figure out what Dumbledore meant by "luck, just a bit of luck."

Sean let his cat claws revert to human hands. He could now partially transform himself, but only into a cat.

[You practiced advanced Transfiguration at the Skilled level. Proficiency +30]

Seeing the measly proficiency gain, he wondered how much an Animagus transformation would boost it.

Christmas dinner arrived in a flash. The rumors were all wrong—no eight hundred barrels of mulled mead, no Weird Sisters performance, just a ridiculous amount of delicious food. Even Sean struggled to keep up.

On his way out of the Great Hall, Harry seemed like he wanted to say something but held back. Sean didn't notice, too focused on grinding the last bit of proficiency for his transformation cookies.

He also tried making a Mrs. Norris cookie, hitting the Skilled practice standard in one go. Snow fell softly outside the Gothic stained-glass windows, turning from light rain to gentle flakes by evening. The corridor was silent, and Sean, barely a young wizard in that moment, stood alone.

His Skilled-level cookies extended his transformation time to ten minutes, and the insights he gained while casting deepened his understanding. The more he understood, the higher his proficiency grew; the higher his proficiency, the deeper his understanding—a perfect loop.

Sean had a sneaking suspicion about his cookies. Though he called them Mrs. Norris cookies, he secretly wanted to add a prefix: Fantastic Beasts Mrs. Norris Cookies.

Mrs. Norris had Kneazle blood, but Sean had only based the cookies on her appearance, not capturing any of the Kneazle's powerful abilities. Kneazles could sense dishonest people and guide lost travelers home—abilities akin to reading character or automatic pathfinding, both incredibly useful.

To pull that off, Sean would need to level up his alchemy and Transfiguration skills, likely to at least Expert level. He was also certain that exploring Fantastic Beasts with his transformation cookies was the second key path to improving their quality.

Lost in thought, Sean reached the third-floor corridor, where bright candles suddenly flickered to life, surrounded by a gaggle of young wizards. As a black cat, he curiously climbed atop a suit of armor, eavesdropping on their whispers.

"The Lucky Statue got remade—heard it's to celebrate a special change this Christmas," Hannah Abbott whispered to her friend.

"Look, Hannah, doesn't the statue kinda look like that cat up there on the armor?" Sally-Anne Perks said just as quietly.

They both glanced at the small, jet-black cat with bright green eyes staring at a statue that looked exactly like it.

Sean was stunned. He hadn't died yet—why was there a statue of him? He felt a sudden urge to scratch it but restrained himself and bolted from the scene.

"Did my eyes trick me, Sally-Anne?" Hannah muttered.

"No, Hannah, we're in luck! That was a lucky black cat!" Sally-Anne said excitedly.

In a shadowy corner of the corridor, Sean hadn't transformed back yet when a pair of hands scooped him up.

"Sean?"

He met a pair of curious, amused light-blue eyes. He wasn't sure how Professor McGonagall recognized him, but he leaped from her arms, transforming back into a sheepish young wizard.

"P-Professor, good evening," he stammered.

"Remarkable alchemy, cleverly combined… and you've kept your sense of self. You've figured out your Animagus form, haven't you, child?" McGonagall said, holding the neatly wrapped cookie. Her voice was calm, but she was trembling with excitement. "So, do you want to learn?"

She tried to keep her tone poised and elegant.

"Professor, I'm sorry—Headmaster Dumbledore asked me to study with him this Christmas," Sean explained.

"Oh, child, you don't need to worry about that," McGonagall said with a smile.

But as she turned away, her face went blank. She thought of the so-called black cat statue and Dumbledore's knowing look, and her steps toward the Headmaster's office quickened considerably.

In the dungeons, the chill was slightly softened by the heat from bubbling cauldrons. Snape stared at a deer-shaped cookie in his hand, waved his wand, and the dungeon door sealed shut with a spell.

Then, with a grimace, he took a bite.

No sooner had he finished than the door swung open.

"Oh, Severus, I had to come down here to get away from…" The long-bearded wizard pushed open the door—only someone like him could bypass a magically sealed lock without a sound.

"What is—"

Moments later, a roar echoed through the dungeon.

"I believe our relationship hasn't reached the point where you can barge in without knocking, Dumbledore!"

Oblivious to the chaos his transformation cookies had caused, Sean was making his final push. Just six more proficiency points, and he'd unlock a new alchemy title.
