Chapter 4 - CHAPTER FOUR:A TWIST OF FATE

The Halloween party was in full swing, and the Monroe house bustled with laughter and chatter. Colorful decorations adorned the walls, with spooky skeletons hanging and pumpkins glowing softly in the dim light. Music filled the air, creating an energetic atmosphere that made Sara feel both excited and anxious.

As the night continued, Sara moved between the crowd of friends, helping Kara serve snacks and fill cups with cider. She smiled and chatted, trying to join in the fun, but felt like she was in the background, fading into the walls just like one of their decorations.

Kara, dressed as a delightful witch, was the star of the evening. Every time Edward entered the room, Kara's eyes lit up, and they shared laughter that made Sara's stomach twist. Her heart beat faster every time Edward glanced her way, trying her best to appear unfazed. She wanted to disappear but also wished Edward would notice her.

"Sara! Come over here! We're starting the pumpkin-carving contest!" Kara called from the living room, her voice full of excitement. Sara took a deep breath and forced herself to join the group gathered around the coffee table, where pumpkins were waiting to be transformed.

"Finally! I was wondering where you went!" Edward said, a smile spreading across his face as he handed her a small carving knife. "Are you ready to create a scary masterpiece?"

Sara blushed at his attention. "Uh, yeah! I'll try my best." She smiled back, feeling a spark of happiness for just a moment.

As they all started to carve, the room buzzed with ideas and laughter. Kara and Edward worked side by side, making playful jokes as they created silly faces on their pumpkins. Sara focused on her own pumpkin, trying to distract herself and not think about how much she wanted Edward to notice her.

"Sara, that's looking great!" Kara praised, looking over with admiration. "You've got such a knack for this!"

"Thanks!" Sara replied, her voice slightly strained. Kara's encouragement helped a little, but it also reminded her of how much she wanted to impress Edward.

"Let's see if we can make a face scarier than Kara's!" Jake joked, turning to Sara. His blue eyes sparkled with mischief. "What do you say? You can't let her win this!"

Sara chuckled, feeling more relaxed. "Okay, challenge accepted! Just wait until you see my pumpkin!"

As they continued to carve, the energy in the room was contagious. Participants laughed and chatted while Sara tried to focus on her design. But in the back of her mind, her feelings for Edward, mixed with her loyalty to Kara, kept swirling like a never-ending cycle.

Once the pumpkins were finished, they lined them up on the dining table, each one with its personality shining through. They were all unique—some funny, some scary, but all filled with creativity and laughter. Kara's pumpkin was a whimsical design, while Edward's was a little more serious, with jagged teeth and glowing eyes. Sara's, on the other hand, was an intricate creation, with carefully carved features that showcased a monster that was both funny and a bit terrifying.

"Wow, Sara! That's amazing!" Kara exclaimed, genuinely impressed as they all admired the work. "You should be proud of that!"

Feeling a surge of joy, Sara smiled widely. Perhaps she could shine a little too, even if it wasn't in the same way as Kara. The group cheered and took votes on the best pumpkin, and when it was announced that Sara's pumpkin won the contest, her heart danced with delight.

"Congratulations, pumpkin queen!" Edward grinned, wrapping a playful arm around her shoulder. Sara felt warmth ripple through her, and for a brief moment, everything clicked into place. Could he possibly see her for more than just Kara's sister?

Just as the celebration continued, a chill swept through the room as the lights flickered and dimmed. A few murmurs of surprise echoed around the group, and then the power went out completely, plunging them into darkness.

Kara squealed in surprise, followed by laughter. "Perfect timing for spooky stories!" she said, her voice gleeful as she reached for her phone to use as a light source.

A few friends scrambled to find flashlights and candles. The atmosphere shifted to one of mystery and adventure, as shadows danced along the walls. As voices buzzed with excitement, Ella felt both thrilled and nervous.

"Let's sit in a circle and share scary stories!" one of their friends suggested.

As everyone gathered, Sara felt included and alive, eagerly capturing the attention of the others. Kara sat beside Edward, and Sara found herself across from them, heart racing. As each person took turns sharing haunting tales, the tension stirred within Sara as she glanced at Edward.

Once Edward began to speak, his storytelling was captivating—smooth and confident, he painted a vivid picture of ghosts and ghouls that sent shivers down Sara's spine. She noticed Kara was watching him intently, which made her smile but also nudge her envy.

Finally, it was Sara's turn. She took a deep breath, nervous but determined not to let the moment go by. "Okay, I have a story," she started, her voice shaking but growing steadier as she continued.

Sara shared a cleverly crafted ghost story that combined her love for art with the Halloween theme. As she spoke, she could see the rapt attention of her friends, eyes wide in the flickering candlelight. She felt a rush of confidence, knowing she was captivating them, and even Edward's gaze lingered on her, intrigued.

When she finished, everyone erupted in applause, and the room was filled with laughter and excitement. "That was awesome, Sara!" Edward said sincerely, clapping her on the shoulder. "You should tell stories more often!"

Just then, Kara smiled at her sister, beaming with pride. "You really surprised us!" she said, her eyes sparkling.

For the first time in a long while, Sara felt like she was stepping out from under Kara's shadow. Maybe she could be both a supportive sister and someone who shone on her own. As the night continued, Sara's heart was filled with a sense of belonging, of being part of something special.

But as Edward turned his attention back to Kara, Sara felt a familiar ache—a reminder that even as she found her own light, the complex emotions of love and loyalty would always intertwine, creating a dance as tricky as the flickering shadows around them.
