Chapter 123 - Chapter 122: The Aftermath of Determination! A Ramen Promise Between Warriors!

The shockwave from Tsunade's punch redirected Lee's trajectory just in time. Instead of a direct and lethal impact, Lee and Gaara collided against the raised debris. The collision was brutal regardless, sending both bodies rolling across the arena's destroyed floor in opposite directions.

Dust and stone fragments rained down around them. Then, the cloud began to settle.

Gaara lay motionless on his back several yards away. His sand armor had completely shattered, revealing pale skin covered in bruises and cuts. Blood trickled from his nose and the corner of his mouth. His eyes were closed, and his chest rose and fell with shallow breaths. He was unconscious.

On the opposite side of the crater, Lee was barely standing. His legs shook violently, and steam rose from his overheated body. Blood ran down multiple wounds on his arms and shoulders. But he was standing.

And on his face, despite the pain that must have been coursing through every fiber of his being, there was a smile. Tears mixed with blood rolled down his cheeks as his eyes searched for Might Guy in the stands.

"Lee," Guy whispered, his voice cracking. "You really did it."

"I have to admit, Guy," Kakashi said in a low voice. "That student of yours has a tenacity I've rarely seen. Forcing himself to that point and still standing..." He paused and nodded slowly. "You trained him well."

Guy couldn't respond; he was too overwhelmed by emotion. Tsunade was already moving, as if she hadn't just destroyed the arena a second before, reaching Lee first. The boy wobbled dangerously; his legs were finally starting to give out.

"Easy now," Tsunade caught him before he could fall, carefully supporting his weight. "You've done more than enough."

"Tsunade-sama," Lee's voice was hoarse. "Did I... win?"

"Let the referee make that call," Tsunade said as she began to examine his injuries. "But between you and me? You've proven everything you set out to prove."

Hayate Gekkō approached cautiously, inspecting the devastation. The arena floor was completely destroyed, with a massive crater in the center and rubble scattered everywhere. Gaara remained unconscious where he had fallen. Lee was barely maintaining consciousness and couldn't continue without collapsing. But there was a clear difference between the two.

"Winner," he announced clearly, "Rock Lee of Konoha!"

"YOSH! THAT'S MY STUDENT!" Guy's voice boomed through the arena. "THE POWER OF YOUTH TRIUMPHS!"

Naruto was on his feet, waving his fist in the air. "LEE! YOU DID IT! YOU REALLY BEAT HIM!"

Sakura was clapping so hard her hands hurt, a huge smile on her face. Ino, despite her own injuries, cheered just as loudly. Even Shikamaru, who usually found everything troublesome, watched with obvious interest. At the infirmary entrance, Tenten was crying openly, not bothering to hide her emotions.

"That's my teammate! That's the boy who never gives up!"

Beside her, Temari remained frozen. Her hands were clenched into fists so tight that her nails dug into her palms. Her green eyes were wide with disbelief as she looked at the arena. Suna had lost. The thought kept repeating in her mind, growing louder each time.

Did we underestimate Konoha that much? she wondered.

Her thoughts spiraled when she noticed movement in the arena. Medical teams were rushing in with stretchers. Tsunade was carefully laying Lee onto one while barking instructions at her assistants.

"Severe muscle damage throughout the entire body," Tsunade's voice carried authority. "Multiple stress fractures in the left leg and right arm. Extreme chakra depletion from the Gates. He needs immediate treatment, but his condition is stable."

She looked at Guy, who had jumped into the arena and was now kneeling beside his student.

"He'll be fine," Tsunade assured him. "The damage looks worse than it is. I stopped him before the worst occurred. With proper treatment and rest, he will make a full recovery."

Guy closed his eyes, letting out a shaky sigh of relief. "Thank you, Tsunade-sama."

Lee's eyes opened slightly. Despite the exhaustion and pain, the smile remained on his face.

"Sensei," he whispered. "Did you see? Hard work... matters. I proved it."

"Yes, Lee," Guy said, his voice thick with emotion. "You proved it to everyone. You showed them that dedication and determination can overcome any obstacle. I am so proud of you."

"Good," Lee's eyes closed again, a peaceful expression on his face. "That is all I wanted..."

He drifted into unconsciousness, finally allowing his body to rest. Across the crater, medics were attending to Gaara. The Suna ninja was still unconscious, his breathing shallow but steady. His sand had stopped moving entirely, lying inert around him. Kankuro had rushed down from the stands, his face pale with worry. He knelt beside his brother, watching the medics work.

"Is he going to be okay?" Kankuro asked one of the medics.

"He has serious injuries," the medic replied, "but he'll live. He just needs time to recover."

Kankuro exhaled in relief. In the observation box, the conversation between the village leaders had taken a different tone. Homura and Koharu were at the railing, both looking down at the arena with expressions that were hard to read.

"That boy," Homura said slowly, "defeated a Jinchūriki using nothing but taijutsu and willpower."

"Hard work versus natural talent," Koharu muttered. "Against a beast sealed inside a human."

For the first time since they arrived at the exams, both counselors seemed genuinely moved.

"Danzō's philosophy," Koharu said in a low voice, "would have discarded a boy like that. In Danzō's eyes, he would be a failure not worth the resources to train."

"And yet," Homura continued, "that 'failure' just defeated one of the most dangerous genin in the entire exam. He proved that the human spirit, when properly cultivated, can achieve the impossible."

Hiruzen stood nearby, smoking his pipe with a look of satisfaction. He had been listening to their conversation and chose this moment to speak.

"This is what I've been trying to tell you both for years," the Sandaime said softly. "Konoha's strength doesn't come from treating our shinobi as weapons. It comes from recognizing their humanity, from fostering their bonds, from allowing them to fight for something they believe in."

He pointed toward the arena, where Lee was being wheeled away on a stretcher, with Guy walking beside him, his hand never leaving his student's shoulder.

"That boy down there fought with everything he had... because he wanted to prove something important to himself and to the world. That kind of motivation is worth more than any amount of cold efficiency."

Down in the arena, Hayate coughed to get everyone's attention.

"With the conclusion of this match," he announced, "the preliminary rounds are officially over."

Hiruzen stepped forward, his Hokage robes billowing behind him as he descended to the arena floor. The remaining genin gathered before him, some standing confidently while others looked exhausted from their battles.

"First," Hiruzen said warmly, "I want to congratulate you all. The battles we witnessed today were exceptional. You have all shown tremendous growth and skill."

He looked at each of them in turn, his aging eyes showing pride.

"The final round of the Chūnin Exams will take place in one month. This gives you time to rest, to heal from your wounds, and to prepare. The final battles will be held in front of dignitaries from all the major villages and many allied nations. It will be your chance to demonstrate not only your strength as shinobi, but your growth as individuals."

Naruto looked around at the other qualifiers. Sasuke had his usual confident expression. Shikamaru looked like he wanted to be anywhere else. Shino was unreadable behind his dark glasses. Sakura and Hinata looked determined. Tenten was still wiping tears from her eyes. And Lee was being wheeled away on a stretcher, but even unconscious, he kept a peaceful smile.

"Use this month wisely," Hiruzen continued. "Train, rest, and prepare. I look forward to seeing what you will show us in the finals."

The genin dispersed, heading toward the medical wing or back to their senseis. The jōnin in the stands began to file out. Near the infirmary entrance, Temari was still paralyzed. Her hands remained clenched in fists and her jaw was tight. She could feel tears of frustration welling in her eyes.

How do I explain this to Father? Did we really underestimate Konoha this much?

Her mind was spinning with these thoughts when, suddenly, a cheerful voice interrupted her spiral of worry.

"Hey, Temari!"

She looked up sharply to see Naruto approaching with a bright smile. Sakura was at his side, along with Ino, who was moving a bit stiffly from her own injuries.

"What do you want?" Temari's voice came out harsher than she intended.

Naruto didn't seem fazed by her tone. On the contrary, his smile grew wider.

"You promised, remember? You said you'd come get ramen with us. Besides," his expression softened slightly, "it looks like you could use some good food and friendly company."

"I don't know if I should," Temari said hesitantly. "I should probably stay with Gaara and Kankuro..."

"Gaara is in good hands with the medics," Tenten pointed out. "And Kankuro can watch over him for a while. You've been stressed and tense throughout this entire exam. You deserve a break."

Temari looked toward the infirmary where she knew Gaara was being treated. Then she looked back at Naruto and his friends.

Maybe they're right. Maybe I do need a break.
