Chapter 113 - Chapter 112: Tension in the Tower! The Sannin’s Gaze and the Oncoming Storm!

Hours later, the atmosphere in the tower's main hall had shifted dramatically. The casual exhaustion of the earlier arrivals had vanished completely.

Naruto stood at attention in the front row of eighteen Genin. They were all organized in neat lines facing a raised platform where the authority figures had gathered.

To his left stood Sakura. Her green eyes kept flickering toward the platform, and Naruto could practically feel the nervous energy radiating from her. To his right was Sasuke, who had assumed his signature pose with arms crossed. However, Naruto noticed that his teammate's gaze was sharper than usual, taking in every detail of their surroundings.

Behind them, Hinata stood with perfect posture. Her pearl eyes were active as she scanned the gathered crowd. Kiba was fidgeting slightly with Akamaru tucked safely inside his jacket, while Shino remained perfectly still beside him. Ino, Shikamaru, and Choji formed their own unit, with Ino looking notably alert. Tenten also remained vigilant alongside Neji and Lee.

What caught Naruto's attention, however, was not his friends. It was the other Genin in formation.

Naruto felt his skin crawl when his gaze landed on the ninjas from the Sound. There were three of them, wearing headbands with the musical note symbol of Otogakure. The one in the middle, wrapped in bandages and wearing what looked like a gas mask, had an aura that made Naruto's instincts scream. The other two, a girl with long black hair and a boy with spiky black hair, flanked him like bodyguards.

Something is wrong with them, Naruto thought, his hand moving subconsciously toward his kunai pouch.

He was not the only one who noticed. Sakura had gone rigid beside him. When he looked at her, he saw her green eyes fixed on the Sound team with barely hidden hostility.

On the raised platform, the gathered authority figures presented an impressive and intimidating display. In the center stood Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, in his full ceremonial robes. His hat with the kanji for Fire caught the overhead lights. To his right was Kakashi, his visible eye scanning the crowd with the lazy attention of a predator pretending to be bored. Kurenai was also there, her red eyes sharp and focused, with her arms crossed in a way that made her look more like a guard than an observer.

To the left of Hiruzen stood Asuma, smoking casually despite being in an enclosed space. Beside him was Might Guy in his green suit, somehow managing to look both enthusiastic and serious at the same time. Other Jonin instructors filled the platform, creating a wall of elite ninja that served as both judges and an implicit threat.

But it was the figure standing directly to the right of the Hokage that made Naruto's heart leap.

Tsunade.

Her blonde hair was impeccable despite the previous confrontation. Her green jacket was pristine, and her amber eyes swept over the gathered Genin with the kind of evaluation that suggested she was mentally cataloging their strengths, weaknesses, and how fast she could put them in the hospital if necessary.

Naruto felt a smile spread across his face. Granny Tsunade is here! This is going to be amazing!

His enthusiasm was not shared by everyone present. On the other side of the arena, the Sound team had gone stiff. The one wrapped in bandages in the center had become very still in a way that suggested he was trying very hard not to be noticed. Sweat pooled on what little visible skin he had, and his hands had clenched into fists at his sides.

The girl beside him had turned pale, her dark eyes wide as they locked onto Tsunade. Her breathing had quickened, and she had unconsciously taken half a step back before catching herself.

Zaku was handling it worst of all. His arms, which had been crossed in a show of confidence, now hung at his sides. There was a visible tremor running through his frame.

No, Dosu thought, his mind racing behind the bandages. Orochimaru sama said the exams would be chaos, that security would be focused on the forest, that we would have opportunities to complete our mission and...

His thoughts cut off when Tsunade's gaze swept over his team. For just a moment, her amber eyes locked with his, and Dosu felt his heart stop.

She knows, Kin realized, her palms sweating inside her gloves. Either way, we are marked. We can no longer make a move against the Konoha Genin. Any aggressive action, any hint of our real mission, and she will crush us before we can even blink.

Zaku's thoughts were less coherent. That is one of the Legendary Sannin. We are Genin. We are not even real Genin, we are sleeper agents pretending to be Genin. If she decides we are a threat, we will not even see her move before it is over.

Near the platform, partially obscured by shadows, Anko stood with Kurenai. Despite her injuries, Anko's posture was alert. When her eyes found the Sound team, her lips curled into something that was not quite a smile.

"There they are," Anko murmured, pitching her voice low enough so only Kurenai could hear. "The snake's little pets. Bold of them to show up."

Kurenai's red eyes narrowed as she followed Anko's gaze. "They had to. Being here gives them a certain amount of protection from our undercover operations. They know we cannot stop them now that they have moved on to the next phase of the exam... in a public place with witnesses and authority figures everywhere."

"They are neutered," Anko finished, her smile turning savage. "They cannot target Naruto or any of the other Konoha Genin directly without exposing themselves. It must be killing them inside."

"We should have handled them in the forest," Kurenai said, her tone regretful. "When we had the chance, at the start of the exam."

"Hindsight is perfect," Anko replied. "But we did not know for sure they were from Orochimaru. Now? Now we know, and they know we know, and everyone knows we cannot do anything about it without triggering exactly the kind of diplomatic nightmare the Hokage is trying to avoid."

Kurenai's jaw tightened. "Then we wait."

"We wait," Anko confirmed. "But the moment the exams are over, the moment that diplomatic protection vanishes, they are mine. I do not care if they run back to the Sound Village or try to disappear into the criminal underworld. I will find them, and I will make them regret ever stepping foot in my forest."

Their quiet conversation was interrupted when Hiruzen raised his hand, calling for attention. The murmur of conversation that had been rippling through the gathered Genin died instantly, replaced by attentive silence.

"Welcome," Hiruzen began. "You eighteen Genin represent the survivors of the second stage of the Chunin Exams. You have endured five days in the Forest of Death, faced both foreign and local opponents, secured your objective scrolls, and reached this tower. For that, you have my congratulations and respect."

He paused, letting the words sink in, and Naruto felt a small surge of pride.

"However," Hiruzen continued, and there it was, "we find ourselves in an unusual situation."

Hayate Gekko stepped forward from the line of Jonin. His sickly appearance was somehow made worse by the harsh overhead lighting. He coughed once, then twice, before clearing his throat to speak.

"Normally," Hayate said, "we expect between eight and twelve teams to successfully complete the second stage. This year, due to various factors, six teams have made it. Eighteen Genin in total."

"While this is within acceptable parameters to proceed directly to the third stage," Hayate continued, "the Third Stage of the Chunin Exams is a public display held before Feudal Lords, village leaders, and potential clients from across the continent. It is a demonstration of our village's strength and the quality of our next generation of shinobi."

He paused for another cough, covering his mouth with his fist. "Given the political significance of these demonstrations, and the fact that we have foreign dignitaries already scheduled to attend, the decision has been made to hold preliminary matches to further reduce the number of participants."

The reaction was immediate and explosive.

"WHAT?!" The shout came from multiple Genin at once, a chorus of disbelief and indignation.

"You must be joking!" Kiba's voice rose above the others. "We just survived days in that death trap! We followed the rules, got the scrolls, got here on time, and now you are saying that is not enough?!"

Ino's hand shot upward, not waiting to be called on. "This is completely unfair! The exam parameters clearly stated that reaching the tower with both scrolls was the goal! Nothing was mentioned about additional tests!"

The noise level rose as more Genin joined in, their voices overlapping in a cacophony of protest and frustration. Naruto looked around at his fellow competitors, seeing the same exhaustion and indignation reflected in most of their faces.

Most, but not all.

Gaara had not moved. When he spoke, his voice cut through the noise.

"It does not matter."

The protests died down as attention shifted to the Suna Genin.

"Preliminary matches, additional tests, more opponents," Gaara continued. "None of it matters. I will crush anyone they put in front of me. Their blood will feed Mother, and I will prove my existence by standing over their broken bodies."

The silence that followed was deafening. Even Kiba, who had been in the middle of formulating another protest, shut his mouth with an audible click.

Well, Naruto thought, studying Gaara with new caution. That guy is seriously disturbed. Like, much worse than Sasuke on his darkest day.

Temari looked mortified, her face flushing with embarrassment at her brother's declaration. Kankuro had turned pale.

Hiruzen, to his credit, did not even blink. "Thank you for that... perspective, Gaara of the Desert. Does anyone else wish to withdraw before we proceed?"

Naruto felt Sakura tense beside him. When he looked, he saw her jaw set with determination.

She is excited, he realized with surprise. She wants to show what she can do.

Behind them, Hinata had straightened up, her previous nervousness replaced by a quiet resolve. Tenten was practically vibrating with anticipation, her hand moving subconsciously to check her scroll pouches even though they were empty. Even Ino, despite her earlier protest about fairness, had a glint in her eyes that suggested she was ready for this challenge.

They are all ready, Naruto thought, feeling his own excitement build. They want to show everyone what they can do.

His own hand clenched into a fist.

I cannot wait, he thought, his smile returning. I am going to show everyone how strong I have become. How strong we have all become.

When no one stepped forward to withdraw, Hiruzen nodded slowly. "Very well. Then I have an announcement regarding security and supervision for the remainder of these exams."

He turned slightly, gesturing toward Tsunade. "Given the recent... complications that have arisen during the exam process, I am implementing enhanced security measures for your protection and the integrity of the examination. Effective immediately, Tsunade Senju, one of the Legendary Sannin and the greatest medical ninja in Konoha, will assume direct supervision of all exam procedures."

The effect on the Sound team was immediate and devastating.

Dosu felt his blood turn to ice. No. Please, no. Anyone but her.

Orochimaru's information had covered the major players in Konoha. But Tsunade's return to the village had been recent. Their intelligence had been incomplete, and yet Orochimaru decided to proceed with the plans anyway.

Crap, Dosu thought frantically. We cannot complete our mission with her watching.

Kin was breathing too fast, on the verge of hyperventilating. The former teammate of Orochimaru sama. If she even suspects we are connected to him, I do not think hiding in plain sight will save us...

The three Sound Genin were frozen in their own personal nightmare, watching as the blonde woman who represented the complete failure of their mission accepted her new role with a sharp nod.

Meanwhile, Naruto was practically bouncing on his feet.

"Yes!" he hissed under his breath, loud enough for Sakura to hear. "Granny Tsunade is in charge! This is going to be amazing!"

Sakura elbowed him lightly. "Stop calling her that."

"She is okay with it," Naruto corrected with a grin. "Besides, it is incredible! We can actually focus on fighting instead of worrying about assassins."

Despite herself, Sakura felt her lips curl into a small smile. Naruto's enthusiasm was infectious, and he was not wrong. Having Tsunade sama overseeing the exams made her feel safer, knowing that any dirty tricks would be intercepted before they became problems.

"Besides," Naruto continued, lowering his voice further, "this is our chance. We can show what we have learned!"

Sakura blinked. That was... actually a very good point. She looked back at Hinata, catching her eye. The Hyuga heiress gave a small nod, clearly having reached the same conclusion.

On the platform, Tsunade stepped forward.

"Listen up," she said bluntly. "I am not here to coddle you or hold your hands. You are shinobi, or you are trying to become shinobi, which means you are expected to handle whatever is thrown at you. These preliminary matches will be one vs one. The fight ends when a participant is unable to continue, surrenders, or I decide they are about to die."

She let that sink in, her amber eyes scanning the crowd. "And make no mistake, I will stop a fight if I determine it has become lethal. I am a medical ninja. I know exactly how much damage the human body can take before crossing the line from injured to dead. You will not die in my arena. However, you will get hurt. Possibly badly. That is the nature of combat, and that is what you signed up for when you became Genin."

Naruto felt a chill run down his spine.

"The pairings will be determined randomly," Tsunade continued, gesturing to a large display board that had been set up beside the platform. "Hayate will announce the participants. You will have no preparation time, no warning about your opponent's abilities. You fight with what you have, with what you know, with what you have learned. That is the reality of shinobi combat. Most fights do not give you time to prepare."

She crossed her arms, her expression softening slightly. "That being said, I will provide medical care between matches. Win or lose, you will be patched up and cleared before being released from the arena. I do not send injured children out into the world without treatment. That is not how I operate."

The combination of harsh expectation and underlying care in her voice created a strange dynamic. Naruto felt his respect for her grow even more. She was tough, but she actually cared about their well being in a way that felt genuine rather than mandatory.

Hiruzen stepped forward again. "Before we begin, I want to make something absolutely clear. These matches are not personal vendettas. They are evaluations of your skills, your decision making under pressure, and your potential as Chunin level shinobi. You are expected to fight with honor, to respect your opponents, and to accept both victory and defeat with grace."

His eyes hardened slightly. "Any contestant who attempts to kill their opponent, who uses forbidden techniques, or who fails to cease combat when ordered to do so by the judge will be immediately disqualified, arrested, and potentially banned from future exams. Have I made myself clear?"

A chorus of "Yes, Hokage sama" echoed through the arena.

"Good," Hiruzen nodded. "Then let us begin. Hayate, if you would be so kind?"

Hayate stepped forward, pulling out a sealed scroll. He broke the seal with a practiced motion, and the scroll unfurled to reveal a complex arrangement of names and pairings.

"Very well," Hayate said. "The preliminary matches will begin immediately. All participants not currently fighting will observe from the upper gallery. Medical personnel will be on standby."

He paused for another cough, covering his mouth with his fist. "Additionally, I must clarify that these matches will begin now. There will be no additional rest period."

The reaction was immediate.

"NOW?!" multiple voices shouted simultaneously.

The noise level rose again as complaints multiplied, Genin expressing their indignation over the lack of preparation time.

But among the chorus of protests, some voices were notably absent.

Naruto was grinning broadly, his blue eyes shining with barely contained anticipation. Yes. Yes. This is perfect. No time to overthink, no time to get nervous. Just pure action.

Beside him, Sakura had adjusted her stance, her body settling into a prepared combat position. Her green eyes were focused, her breathing even. I have been training for this. I am ready.

Behind them, Hinata had activated her Byakugan completely. I will not let my exhaustion be an excuse. If I fight now, I fight now. I will give everything I have.

Ino had her hands on her hips, her expression determined rather than exhausted. After everything I have been through, after all the training with this new power... a few days of fatigue will not stop me.

Tenten was stretching her shoulders, rolling her neck to loosen the muscles. This is the chance I have been waiting for. Tired or not, I am going to show them all what I am capable of.

Even Sasuke, despite his neutral expression, had a sharpness in his eyes that suggested the idea of fighting now excited him rather than bothered him.

Hayate waited for the noise to subside before continuing, his expression impassive. "The nature of shinobi missions is unpredictable. You will rarely have ideal conditions. Part of reaching the Chunin rank is demonstrating that you can function effectively under adverse circumstances."

He paused, letting the words settle.

Then he spoke.

"The order of participation and the combat pairings will be as follows—"
