Chapter 205 - Chapter 205

SHIELD agents, stiff and alert, formed a loose cordon. They watched, but didn't interfere, as four figures in gleaming armor marched across the desert floor.

Lady Sif, her dark hair a sharp contrast to the pale sand, led the way. Volstagg's broad frame shook the ground with each step. Hogun, grim as always, scanned the horizon, while Fandral, ever the peacock, managed to look dashing even in this dust bowl.

They moved with purpose, their faces a mix of relief and concern as they spotted Thor near Jane's research van.

Thor saw them too. A booming laugh ripped from his chest, echoing off the canyon walls.

"My friends!"

He surged forward, his mighty arms open wide. Volstagg met him first, engulfed in a bear hug that nearly lifted the larger Asgardian off his feet.

CRUNCH

"Thor!" Volstagg roared, his laugh hearty.

Thor clapped Hogun on the shoulder next. Hogun simply nodded, a rare, almost imperceptible easing of his usual stern expression. Fandral, with a flourish, offered a hand. Thor slapped his back, a joyful, bone-jarring blow.

It was a real reunion, a moment of genuine warmth in this dusty, bizarre landscape. My cynical heart even twinged a little.

Then, Thor turned, beaming like a proud father, ready to introduce his new found family.

"My companions," Thor announced, gesturing grandly to his Asgardian friends. "These are my newfound allies! The Lady Jane Foster, a scholar of the stars! The wise Dr. Erik Selvig! And the spirited Darcy Lewis!"

Jane offered a polite, somewhat overwhelmed smile. Erik gave a cautious nod. Darcy, bless her, looked completely dumbfounded, probably trying to process the sudden appearance of more impossibly attractive, armor-clad aliens.

Sif, her gaze lingering on Jane for a moment too long, offered a stiff nod. Volstagg boomed a friendly greeting, while Fandral, ever the charmer, winked. Hogun remained silent, his eyes sweeping over the human scientists as if assessing their combat readiness.

"And these," Thor continued, turning to Coulson and Hawkeye, "are the agents of SHIELD! And this, this is Cipher, a warrior whose strength rivals my own!"

He clapped me on the back, a little too hard.

Coulson offered a tight, professional smile to the Asgardians, then gave me a look that screamed, 'We need to talk about that 'warrior whose strength rivals my own' bit.' Hawkeye just raised an eyebrow at Thor, then at me. He looked like he wanted to ask if Thor had been sampling the local moonshine again.

I just offered a small, knowing smirk. Thor was certainly overselling my current physical strength, but the sentiment was nice.

Volstagg clapped Erik on the back, a hearty, booming sound that made the poor man stumble a few steps.

"A pleasure to meet such learned mortals!" Volstagg declared, his voice a jovial thunder. "Your minds, they must be as grand as your feasts!"

Erik, still catching his breath, managed a weak, academic smile. Darcy, meanwhile, went a little red as Fandral offered her a flourishing bow.

"My lady," Fandral began, his smile dazzling, "your spirit shines brighter than the desert sun."

Darcy just blinked, clearly not used to such overt charm. I had to suppress a chuckle. This was a classic Fandral move.

Hogun, as usual, kept things short and to the point. He gave Jane a curt nod, his dark eyes taking in every detail of her, then swept his gaze over Coulson and Hawkeye. He was always assessing, always looking for threats. It was his whole vibe.

Sif's eyes met Jane's for a moment, a flicker of something I couldn't quite read, before she turned her attention to Coulson and Hawkeye.

"Greetings, agents of SHIELD," Sif said, her voice composed and respectful.

Her eyes then landed on me, sharp and scrutinizing. She tilted her head slightly, acknowledging Thor's earlier boast about my strength. It was a silent challenge, a warrior's assessment. I just returned her gaze, a small, confident smirk playing on my lips. She wouldn't find any fear here.

"My friends," Thor said, his voice dropping to a serious tone, "I am glad you are here. But tell me, is my father truly dead?"

The Warriors Three and Sif exchanged confused glances. Erik, Jane, and Darcy looked equally puzzled, having missed Loki's little performance.

"Dead?" Sif asked, her voice laced with disbelief. "By Odin's beard, Thor, what madness is this? Your father lives, though he rests deeply in the Odinsleep."

Volstagg nodded, his boisterousness replaced by concern.

"Aye, Thor. He has been in his slumber since you departed for Jotunheim."

"Loki," Hogun rumbled, his voice grim.

I knew exactly what Hogun was thinking. Loki's lies were already causing problems, and this was just another example.

"Loki visited me," Thor explained, his frustration evident. "He claimed Odin had died. He said my exile was all that kept peace with Jotunheim."

The Warriors Three and Sif exchanged looks that spoke volumes. Disappointment. Anger. A growing understanding of Loki's latest deception. It was a classic villain move, manipulating his brother in his most vulnerable state.

Thor's joyful expression shattered. The smile slid from his face, replaced by a deep, cold fury.

His eyes, once filled with warmth, turned hard, staring into the middle distance.

"Loki," he growled, the name a low, dangerous rumble. "He has always been a trickster, but this…"

He clenched his fists, knuckles white. The sand around his feet stirred. I saw the raw pain in his eyes, the sting of betrayal. Loki wasn't just a villain to him; he was family. And this deception, lying about their father, that cut deep.

His sadness quickly shifted. It transformed into something sharper, something more dangerous. The anger, simmering beneath the surface, began to boil.

"He will answer for this."

He didn't need the hammer to be formidable. I could feel the power radiating off him, the sheer force of his rage. Loki had truly pushed the wrong button this time.

The sky above us began to rumble. It wasn't a distant thunder; it was a deeper, more resonant vibration that shook the very ground.

A brilliant, multi-colored beam of light sliced through the heavens, descending with a high-pitched whine.

It struck the desert floor about a hundred yards away, kicking up a massive cloud of dust and sand. The sheer force of it made the air crackle.

"The Bifrost," I said, my voice tight. My gut clenched. I knew exactly what was coming.

"Coulson!" I yelled, my voice cutting through the rising wind. "It's the Destroyer! Get your people ready!"

Coulson's face, usually so calm, went grim. He barked orders into his comms, his movements swift and decisive.

"Agents, defensive positions! Now!"

SHIELD agents, previously in observation mode, scrambled. They unholstered weapons, fanning out, forming a defensive perimeter around the scientists and the vans. It was organized chaos, but it was effective.

Hawkeye, already in motion, had his bow drawn. An arrow, tipped with some kind of glowing device, was nocked and ready. He took a tactical stance, eyes locked on the dissipating light. He was ready for anything.

I heard the distant sirens of what sounded like the last of the town's evacuation vehicles speeding away. This was it. The desert base was now the frontline.

The light from the Bifrost began to dim, the swirling colors fading. The dust cloud started to settle.

My breath caught in my throat.

It wasn't just the Destroyer.

As the last of the rainbow light vanished, a horde of Frost Giants emerged from the swirling sand. Their blue forms loomed large and menacing, their eyes burning with cold malice. There were dozens of them, maybe more, standing shoulder to shoulder.

And beside them, silent and imposing, stood the Destroyer.

Its metallic body reflected the harsh desert sun, a faceless, unstoppable engine of destruction. Its visor glowed with an ominous, orange-white light. My stomach dropped.

Oh, you've got to be kidding me.

I expected a giant robot, sure. But an army of Frost Giants with it? Loki wasn't just sending a message. He was sending a full-blown declaration of war. This just got a whole lot more complicated. And a hell of a lot more dangerous.
