Chapter 4 - chapter 4..The Frozen Reckoning

The wind swept violently through the towering pines of the Silverridge Forest, carrying snowflakes that bit like shards of ice against exposed skin. Each gust twisted the branches above, sending clouds of frost cascading onto the snow-covered ground. The forest, usually silent at night, was alive with ominous whispers. Shadows shifted unnaturally, stretching long and sinister under the eerie crimson glow of the blood moon. Kaelen crouched low beside Selene, his amber eyes scanning the treeline for movement. His muscles were taut, every sense alert. He could feel the tension in the air, a warning that danger approached, and he knew that the night would test them both in ways they had never imagined.

Selene stumbled behind him, her cloak dragging through the snow, wet and heavy. Her breath came in ragged gasps, visible in the frigid air, mingling with the mist that rose from the forest floor. Her fingers were numb from the cold, but more than that, she felt the familiar fire of the mark on her wrist. It pulsed in time with the blood moon above, a heat that burned beneath her skin. She pressed her palm against the tree trunk to steady herself, but the trembling in her body was not from the cold. It was fear and anticipation, the knowledge that something she had longed to uncover was about to reveal itself.

Kaelen's voice cut through the sound of the wind, calm but commanding. "They are coming," he said, his tone low and dangerous. "These are not ordinary hunters. They have been sent for you because of the power you carry, the legacy of your bloodline. They will not hesitate or show mercy."

Selene's heart clenched. For years, she had tried to outrun her past, to bury the memories of the fire that claimed her family. She had replayed that night countless times, the twisted metal of the car, the flames licking the edges of her parents' lives, the smoke filling her lungs as she screamed for them. Everyone told her it was an accident, but she knew better. She had studied the wreckage, traced the jagged marks on the brakes, discovered the tampering. Someone had chosen their deaths, and now, years later, the hunters had come to finish the task.

Kaelen rose slowly, positioning himself protectively in front of her. The snow crunched under his boots. His stance was one of controlled readiness, every muscle coiled to strike at the first sign of threat. "Do not run," he warned. "Stand beside me. We will face them together."

From the shadows, figures emerged, moving like predators through the snowy undergrowth. They were silent, but their presence was palpable. They circled, deliberate and methodical, and the tension in the forest thickened like a storm about to break. One figure stepped forward, taller than the others, cloaked in black with a silver amulet that caught the moonlight and glimmered like liquid metal. The figure spoke, the voice cold and echoing. "The blood-marked one does not belong in these woods. She will come with us willingly or by force."

Selene's chest tightened. Her pulse pounded in her ears. She could not flee. Her legs felt heavy, weighted by the snow and the gravity of the moment. "I will not go with you," she said, trying to sound firm, though her voice trembled with fear and anger. "You cannot have me."

The figure laughed, a hollow sound that seemed to carry through the forest. "You do not understand the fate written in your blood," he said. "You are bound to a destiny older than yourself. You cannot escape it."

Kaelen's eyes blazed amber, reflecting the blood-red moonlight. His voice was low, deadly, and unwavering. "No one touches her while I draw breath."

Suddenly, the attackers lunged. Shadows moved with terrifying speed and precision, slicing through the snowy forest like living blades. Kaelen responded instantly, each strike calculated and lethal. He moved with the grace of a seasoned warrior, each motion fluid, every attack precise. Selene ducked behind him, unsure whether she should fight or hide. Then she felt the heat of her mark intensify, a scorching pulse spreading through her veins. Without thinking, her hands flared with energy, sending a crimson wave outward. One of the hunters was thrown backward, crashing into a tree with a deafening impact. The others faltered, eyes wide with shock and fear at the power she had just unleashed.

Kaelen's gaze met hers, a mixture of awe and caution in his expression. "You are far stronger than you realize," he said. "But you must learn to control it, or it will consume you."

The lead hunter slowly drew back his hood. Selene froze. Her stomach turned, and a chill ran down her spine. The face she saw made her breath catch. It was a face she had desperately tried to forget. The one responsible for the deaths of her parents and brother was standing before her, alive and formidable.

"You," she whispered, barely able to speak. Her hand twitched toward the mark on her wrist, feeling its furious pulse.

"It is me," he said, his smirk cruel and self-assured. "I watched you grow, waiting for the blood moon to rise. Now your power awakens, and it will belong to me."

Selene's world tilted. Every memory of loss and suspicion, every unanswered question she had carried for years, crashed into one unbearable moment. The blood moon above painted the forest in deep red light, illuminating the undeniable truth. The man who had haunted her nightmares and stolen her family's future stood before her, claiming dominion over her.

Kaelen moved closer, his body a shield between Selene and the enemy. His voice was a low growl, full of wrath. "You will pay for your crimes. No harm will come to her."

The figure laughed again, and the shadows around him shifted and twisted into monstrous forms, clawed and inhuman. They advanced, a terrifying wave of darkness that threatened to engulf them. Selene's mark flared in response, energy erupting from her fingers and sweeping through the forest in a wave of red light. Several attackers were thrown back by the force.

Kaelen struck with deadly accuracy, incapacitating two more hunters. Selene realized the fight was far from over. A shadow moved between them, unnaturally fast, too quick for the eye to follow. Before she could react, a cold, firm hand gripped her shoulder.

Her eyes widened in shock and terror. The forest fell silent under the blood moon, as if holding its breath. Everything she thought she knew about her past, her family, and her own power had been shattered. She was trapped in the enemy's grasp. Kaelen prepared for the next strike. The snow around them seemed to glow crimson, reflecting the violence and fear.

The chapter ended with Selene frozen in the grip of the figure, Kaelen poised to defend her, and the forest itself a silent witness to the looming revelation. The blood moon shone above them, leaving the reader hanging, desperate to know the identity of the figure, the fate of Selene, and whether the Duskbane heir could protect her from the darkness closing in..
