Chapter 11 - The First Gym Battle

The arena was quiet at first, sunlight streaming across the stone floor. Luke stood at one end, black hair falling slightly into his eyes, feeling the familiar thrill of challenge. Today was his first Gym battle, and though he was confident in his training, he knew every move would count.

At the opposite end, Steven adjusted his battle gear. He had never heard of Luke before—this was an unknown challenger. His Rock-type Pokémon waited behind him, solid and intimidating, and Steven's expression was calm but focused. He treated every battle seriously, no matter who stood across from him.

Luke released his first Pokémon: his male Houndoom, flames flickering along its back. Across from him, Steven sent out Kabuto from Kanto, its shell gleaming under the sun.

"Begin!" called the referee, and the battle was underway.

Kabuto lunged with Rock Throw, sending sharp stones toward Houndoom. Luke reacted quickly, calling out: "Dark Pulse!" Houndoom's attack hit the rocks mid-air, sending fragments flying harmlessly away. Houndoom moved with precision, anticipating Kabuto's next strike.

Steven's eyes narrowed. "Kabuto, Aqua Jet!" Kabuto darted forward with surprising speed, claws aimed at Houndoom. But Luke had trained for reflexes like this—Houndoom dodged with a quick sidestep, retaliating with Flamethrower, forcing Kabuto back onto defensive footing.

Luke's heart raced, adrenaline fueling his focus. Houndoom's movements were fierce, yet calculated, a perfect reflection of their bond. After a few more exchanges, Houndoom struck with Dark Pulse, hitting a critical spot and knocking Kabuto out.

"First battle goes to you," the referee announced. Luke recalled Houndoom, letting it breathe while he prepared for the next match.

Luke's second Pokémon, the female Houndoom , stepped onto the arena. Across from her, Steven sent Sudowoodo, swaying slightly, seemingly relaxed but solid as a rock.

Luke studied the field. "Stay focused. Flamethrower first!" The female Houndoom's flames flared, lighting up the arena. Sudowoodo held firm, absorbing some damage with its Rock-knowledge. Luke noticed the pattern: Sudowoodo relied on stability and counterattacks.

"Crunch!" Steven commanded. Sudowoodo lunged, jaws snapping. The female Houndoom dodged and struck back with Dark Pulse, weakening the Rock-type. Kramurx flitted above, calling a supportive Quick Attack, landing on Sudowoodo to disrupt its stance.

The battle escalated, a tense dance of fire, shadow, and brute strength. With coordinated attacks, Luke's female Houndoom finally overpowered Sudowoodo. Luke exhaled, recalling her. Two battles down, one to go.
