How exactly did we end up driving to Zion's family home?
The plan was never this. We had several days left before school started again, and I assumed we would spend them peacefully at his place. Then his parents called. His mother wanted to prepare a home-cooked meal, and his father mentioned how Zion had been away too long and missed too many family dinners. I attempted to gracefully excuse myself, but Zion had already accepted their invitation before I could speak.
So here we sat, together in the back seat while his parents occupied the front.
Zion never released my hand during the entire journey. My fingers felt icy, but his remained warm and firm, enveloping mine as if it were the most natural thing in the world. I rested my head on his shoulder, watching the landscape rush past the window.
"Everything will be fine," he whispered against my hair. "There's no reason to worry. I'm right here with you."
