Chapter 5: Heading to the Alola Region
Pokémon: Sylveon
Level: 29
Gender: Female
Height: 100cm
Weight: 23.5kg
Ability: Cute Charm Moves: Yawn (Inherited), Helping Hand, Growl, Tackle, Tail Whip, Sand Attack, Baby-Doll Eyes, Quick Attack, Fairy Wind, Draining Kiss, Skill Swap, Misty Terrain
This was Sylveon's current status, but it was more than enough for the moment. Furthermore, after reaching level 29 and learning Misty Terrain, it became impossible to inflict status conditions for five turns, and Dragon-type moves were weakened by half.
Seeing Flint's Vibrava, Ryan almost laughed out loud. After all, Fairy-type hadn't been officially recognized yet, and no one knew that Fairy-type Pokémon were immune to Dragon-type moves.
Flint recalled his Graveler and sent out Vibrava, saying, "Kid, you have a strong understanding of battle tactics and are excellent at training Pokémon. Your skills are quite impressive. I need to get serious now. This Pokémon I captured during my travels in the Hoenn region is very powerful. Even if you had two Pokémon left, this one could handle them both. But since you've impressed me, let's see what you've got. You attack first."
Seeing Flint's expression of supreme confidence, Ryan smirked and said, "Then let's show everyone your true strength, Sylveon. Use Misty Terrain!"
Sylveon stomped the ground, and a burst of fairy energy instantly dyed the entire rocky battlefield pink. Flint was confused about the effect of this move and commanded, "Vibrava, use Dragon Breath!"
"Counter with Skill Swap," Ryan said with a knowing smile.
Vibrava was a Dragon and Ground-type with the Levitate ability. Fairy-type moves were super effective against Dragon-types, while Levitate made it immune to Ground-type attacks. It was safe to say that Sylveon had completely neutralized both of Vibrava's main offensive capabilities. Even if Vibrava had other moves, it would be nearly impossible to instantly defeat Sylveon. With its health-recovering move Draining Kiss, Sylveon was practically invincible.
As Ryan had anticipated, after Skill Swap, Sylveon gained Vibrava's Levitate ability, forcing Flint to completely abandon any Ground-type strategies. Seeing Sylveon take Dragon Breath with minimal damage, Flint instinctively assumed Sylveon had high defensive stats. Sonic Boom was also negated by the Misty Terrain, leaving him with only Dragon Breath and Rock Slide to try and wear down Sylveon's health.
However, Sylveon, relying on Draining Kiss to recover health, effectively drained Vibrava's stamina while maintaining her own.
"Vibrava is unable to battle! The winner of this Gym challenge is Ryan from Pallet Town!" Brock announced the results. Flint's face flushed red with embarrassment.
With a dry cough, Flint said, "Well... Congratulations on your victory, Ryan. This Boulder Badge is yours. By the way, can you tell me more about this Sylveon? It's quite a remarkable Pokémon."
Ryan took the badge and put it in his backpack. He knelt down and patted Sylveon's head. "Sylveon is an evolved form of Eevee - a new type I call Fairy-type. Fairy-types are completely immune to Dragon-type moves and deal super effective damage against them. I'll report this information to Professor Oak later. Hopefully, he can help me apply for some research funding from the Pokémon League."
Hearing that Fairy-types were immune to Dragon-types, Flint felt like spitting blood. Thinking back to the previous battle, he realized his defeat was sealed the moment he sent out Vibrava. Fairy-types with Levitate couldn't be instantly defeated, but they could easily wear down Vibrava. Flint shook his head, suddenly feeling his age.
Ash and his friends excitedly came over to ask questions, which Ryan patiently answered. Ash invited Ryan to travel with them, but Ryan immediately declined. He waved his plane ticket and said, "Thanks, but I won the grand prize from that vending machine. I'm going to call Professor Oak and then fly straight to the Alola region for a vacation. Maybe we'll meet again sometime!"
He then promptly left. Honestly, traveling with Ash's group meant encountering rare Pokémon would increase, but so would the trouble. It was best to avoid that chaos whenever possible.
Back at the Pokémon Center to let Sylveon rest, Ryan called Professor Oak to explain about Sylveon and the Fairy-type discovery. He also hoped that Professor Oak could apply for research grants from the Pokémon League - at least enough to renovate the run-down starter home the League had provided in Pallet Town.
Professor Oak readily agreed and even suggested that Ryan send Sylveon to him for research purposes. Ryan said he'd take his team on vacation first and they could discuss it when he returned. He took several photos of Sylveon and sent them to the Professor. He also mentioned several potential Fairy-type Pokémon he'd observed in the Kanto region, letting Oak research them independently.
At noon, he grabbed lunch at the Pokémon Center. Afterward, Ryan headed to the airport. After boarding his plane, it took off for the Alola region.
The next morning, the plane landed at Akala Island's airport, where a luxury shuttle took Ryan to the Royal Dome Resort. He checked into the top-floor presidential suite and released his three eager Pokémon. The spacious suite allowed them to stretch out after being confined in their Poké Balls.
He changed into swim shorts and stepped onto the beach, immediately drawing attention from many vacationers. Of course, it wasn't Ryan they were looking at, but Sylveon. Her adorable appearance immediately captivated the crowd. As he watched the bustling groups of beachgoers gather around his Pokémon, Ryan secretly gave Sylveon a thumbs-up.
He let his team roam freely. Beedrill and Sylveon found beach chairs to bask in the sun. Sylveon was adorable, and Beedrill's shiny coloration also earned plenty of attention. Only Charmeleon, wearing a small beach vest, stayed close to Ryan.
Ryan patted Charmeleon's head affectionately. After all, it was his starter Pokémon, so their bond was special. He went to the Lapras rental station to experience Alola's unique Poké Ride system. He also brought his Super Rod - the Alola region's waters were known to be rich with Pokémon, making his fishing rod quite useful.
Riding Lapras a short distance from the beach, Charmeleon spotted a school of fish swimming below and playfully reached out toward them. The fish scattered at the sight of Charmeleon's claws.
Ryan, seeing they were just ordinary fish, ignored them. Even in the Pokémon world, regular animals existed alongside Pokémon. After all, people had to eat something, and most Pokémon were too intelligent to be considered food sources.
He attached Pokémon food to the Super Rod's special lure. This lure wasn't shaped like an ordinary fishing hook, but designed to attract Pokémon specifically by mimicking their preferred food sources.
He cast the line into the water, and within 10 seconds, the fishing line went taut. Ryan immediately began reeling, and a Wishiwashi was pulled up. Ryan shook his head, carefully removed the small fish, and released it back into the ocean.
Wishiwashi had strong schooling abilities, but individually they were quite weak. Large numbers of Wishiwashi had to gather together to form their powerful School Form. A single one couldn't accomplish much on its own.
He attached fresh Pokémon food to the lure, cast it back into the water, and waited to see what the next catch would be.
