Chapter 18 – Bonds on the Edge
The clash rang like thunder. Ice shattered, red chakra burned, and two young shinobi collided with the force of destiny. Shards of frozen light rained across the battlefield, melting instantly against the roaring aura surrounding Naruto.
Haku skidded back, his sandals scraping ice. His chest heaved, his once-perfect mask now lying in pieces across the ground. Blood stained the corner of his lips, yet his gaze never wavered.
Naruto landed heavily, claws digging into the frost. His eyes glowed scarlet, the whisker marks on his face darkened, his breaths coming out in guttural growls. The power of the Nine-Tails coiled inside him, begging to be unleashed further.
Sasuke leaned weakly against a broken mirror shard, Sharingan fading as his vision blurred. "Naruto… finish it. Don't… don't let him—" His words trailed into a cough.
Naruto's chest tightened. He turned toward Sasuke, then back to Haku. The boy's sorrowful eyes pierced through the demonic haze.
"You're strong," Haku whispered, his voice gentle despite the blood trickling down his chin. "But strength without purpose is empty. My purpose is Zabuza-sama. Yours…?"
Naruto's nails dug into his palms. "My purpose… is to protect my friends. Sasuke. Sakura. Old man Kakashi. Even if it kills me, I'll never let them die."
Haku's sad smile returned. "Then we are alike… and yet destined to clash."
With that, he raised his hands, weaving signs faster than before. Ice crystals spiraled, forming a new array of mirrors—less perfect, flickering from exhaustion, but still deadly.
Naruto roared, his chakra flaring. "I won't lose to you!"
He launched forward, smashing through the mirrors as Haku blurred between them, senbon slicing the air. Every strike cut Naruto, but the wounds sealed instantly under the burning red aura. Naruto's fist grazed Haku's shoulder, sending him spinning, blood spraying across the icy floor.
---
Outside the dome, the battle between masters raged on.
Kakashi and Zabuza clashed in a flurry of steel and jutsu. The mist wrapped around them, suffocating and thick, only broken by the occasional spark of lightning or the whistle of a massive blade.
"You're slowing down, Zabuza," Kakashi said coldly, kunai pressed against the executioner's cleaver. "Your tools are slipping. Your control of the mist—it's weakening."
Zabuza growled, his teeth bared. "Tch. And you're still talking too much, Copy Ninja. You won't lay a hand on my tool." His eyes flicked toward the dome. "Haku… don't you dare lose."
---
Inside, Naruto's punches cracked ice like cannon fire. Haku's body blurred again and again, but every movement grew slower. His breaths were ragged, his chakra nearly depleted. The senbon in his hands trembled.
Still, his eyes held that unshakable resolve.
"I won't stop… even if it breaks me."
Naruto lunged again, his fist slamming straight into Haku's chest. The boy's body flew back, crashing into a half-shattered mirror. Blood sprayed, and his knees buckled.
For a moment, silence.
Naruto's breath came hard, his rage-fueled power trembling at the edge of control. His claws flexed, ready to strike again. But when he saw Haku—broken, barely standing, yet smiling softly—his rage faltered.
"Why… why are you smiling?!" Naruto shouted, voice shaking.
Haku's words came faint, almost a whisper. "Because… thank you. You've shown me… your heart. And… now I can give mine away… to protect Zabuza-sama."
Naruto's eyes widened. "No… don't say that—"
---
Suddenly, Haku's head snapped up. His senses locked onto the battle outside the dome. Through the mist, he felt it: Zabuza was cornered. Kakashi's chakra surged, lightning gathering at his hand.
Chidori.
Haku's body trembled. "Zabuza-sama…!"
Without hesitation, he turned away from Naruto. His broken body pushed past the pain, past the blood, moving toward the mist outside.
Naruto reached for him, desperate. "Wait! Don't—!"
But Haku's body flickered, vanishing into the ice mist, his final strength carrying him toward his master.
---
Outside, Kakashi dashed forward, lightning shrieking in his palm. Zabuza, worn and bloodied, struggled to lift his blade in time.
And then—
A figure appeared in front of him.
Haku.
His arms spread wide, his body a shield. His eyes, once so sorrowful, now shone with calm acceptance.
"Zabuza-sama… you gave me purpose. Let me… protect you one last time."
Kakashi's eye widened. He tried to pull back, but momentum carried him forward.
The Chidori pierced through.
The sound of lightning faded into silence.
Naruto burst out of the shattered dome, eyes wide in horror. "HAKU!!!"
Blood dripped onto the frozen bridge. Haku's body slumped against Kakashi's arm, his lips curving into one last faint smile.
"For me… this is happiness…"
