Chapter 110 - Chapter 110: Coordinated Hunt pt 2

The forest seemed to hold its breath. Above the clearing, the Shardwing Raptor circled with menacing precision, wings glinting like shattered glass in the sunlight. Its piercing screech sliced through the silence, echoing off distant cliffs, signaling its intent to strike. Kael crouched low, bowgun at the ready, eyes flicking between the treetops and his teammates.

Hunnt's gauntlets gleamed as he shifted his stance, muscles tensed and ready. Pyro crouched beside him, shield raised, tail flicking as it scanned the canopy. Neither spoke; words weren't necessary. They had established a rhythm during the Reaver fight—a silent communication born of trust, instinct, and countless hours of training.

Kael exhaled sharply. "It's coming. Watch the dive. Stay spaced—don't bunch up!" His voice carried authority, guiding them through the incoming storm of feathers and claws.

The Raptor's screech rose again, louder, closer, before it dove like a missile from the sky. Hunnt anticipated the movement, twisting mid-air as he rolled under the shadowed wings. Pyro darted beneath him, shield up, deflecting the first swipe of the talons. Sparks flew as the claws scraped against reinforced metal and bark.

Kael fired a calculated bolt, aiming near the Raptor's path. The creature veered slightly, giving Hunnt the opening he needed. He lashed out with a flurry of rapid punches, striking the soft underarm near the wing joint. Pyro followed instantly, stabbing at the same weak point with precise jabs, forcing the Raptor to flap back and regain altitude.

Kael's sharp voice cut through the chaos. "Left! Move left! It's diving again!" He fired another bolt to distract the beast, guiding it away from Pyro's flank. The Palico chirped, tail flicking, dodging another swipe, and countered with a stab at the Raptor's side.

Hunnt's eyes narrowed as he read the Raptor's movements, sensing the rhythm of its dives. He ducked and rolled beneath the next downward strike, jabbing upward into the creature's underwing, then pivoting to strike the softer scales along its shoulder. Pyro mirrored him flawlessly, shield absorbing glancing blows while sword strikes raked across the Raptor's torso.

Kael's eyes never left the predator. "Timing, spacing, trust. Keep moving. Don't let it corner you!" He fired another bolt, creating a loud distraction that made the Raptor hesitate mid-dive, giving Hunnt and Pyro the advantage.

The creature screeched in frustration, wings beating furiously as it tried to reposition. Hunnt ducked under a clawed swipe, rolling to the side and slamming a fist into the Raptor's shoulder joint. Pyro jabbed at the soft underwing, drawing a sharp screech from the predator. Kael barked orders again. "Now! Press the advantage! Stay coordinated!"

For a moment, the chaos slowed into a rhythm. Hunnt moved with uncanny precision, dodging each dive and strike, while Pyro reacted instantly, shielding and attacking as needed. Kael's tactical mind saw the openings but couldn't explain how Hunnt seemed to anticipate every swing and strike before it happened. To him, it was raw skill bordering on preternatural reflexes.

The Raptor, battered and disoriented, tried to retreat, spiraling upwards to gain distance. Kael fired a final bolt near its path, forcing it to swerve and break line of sight. Hunnt and Pyro exchanged a brief glance, understanding each other without words. They had anticipated each other's reactions perfectly, exploiting every weakness exposed by Kael's guidance.

As the Raptor regained altitude, circling warily above, Kael lowered his bowgun slightly, breathing heavily. "Impressive… every strike, every dodge—coordination like that… I can't even predict half of what you're doing. Skill… instinct… trust. I see it now."

Hunnt wiped sweat from his brow, smirking faintly. "Observation and instinct, Kael. Nothing more. We move, we react, we protect each other. That's all."

Pyro chirped proudly, tail flicking with satisfaction. "We're a team, nyaah!"

Kael studied the Palico, then Hunnt, his eyes softening slightly. "I can see that. Your bond… it's strong. But this isn't over yet. The Raptor is still circling. It's more cautious, yes—but it's still dangerous. We need to finish this, and carefully."

Hunnt flexed his gauntlets, glancing skyward. "Agreed. We'll press it cautiously. Kael, your guidance keeps it from diving too recklessly. Pyro and I will continue our flanks. Precision first, then strikes. Trust me, we've got this."

Kael nodded slowly, absorbing the forest's tension, the calculated movements of both hunters, and the intelligence of the little Palico. "Then we move as one," he said. "No mistakes. Stay aware. And remember—timing is everything."

The Raptor let out another screech from above, wings flashing in the sunlight, as it prepared for another dive. Kael's voice cut through the tension: "Now!"

Hunnt rolled forward, jabbing under the wing joint with pinpoint accuracy. Pyro mirrored him instantly, blocking a talon swipe and striking back at the torso. The Raptor screamed, twisting midair to avoid further damage, but Kael's timely bolt forced it to retreat. For the first time, it gained distance, circling high above and nursing its wounds.

The hunters paused, chests heaving, the adrenaline still coursing through their veins. Kael lowered his bowgun, respect in his gaze. "I… I don't understand how you do that. I've never seen coordination like this. Not even with practiced squads. Instinct? Skill? Maybe both. But I respect it."

Hunnt gave a faint nod, smirk softening. "We move together. That's all. You provide strategy, Kael. We provide execution."

Pyro chirped, tail flicking, eyes bright. "And we're not done yet, nyaah! We'll finish the bird if it comes down again!"

Kael exhaled, silently acknowledging the growing trust. "I see that. And I trust that you'll act wisely. This… this is teamwork. And I've never experienced it quite like this."

Above them, the Shardwing Raptor circled once more, cautious but alive, watching the hunters with wary intelligence. The aerial assault had tested their trust, coordination, and timing. Hunnt and Pyro's instincts had carried them through, while Kael's tactical oversight had provided the guidance they needed to survive and pressure the predator.

For a fleeting moment, the three hunters—one strategic, one instinctive, and one loyal companion—stood together, united not by words but by trust earned in the heat of battle. The forest was quiet now, yet tension lingered in the air. They knew the fight wasn't completely over, but the bond forged in these moments had solidified, preparing them for the next encounter, whatever form it might take.
