Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 – Memories That Aren’t His

The ward quieted down after the doctors finished their frantic examinations. Machines beeped steadily, and the smell of antiseptic lingered in the air.

The Lin Family's matriarch sat at her son's side, her fingers gripping his hand tightly as though he might vanish again at any moment.

"Yun'er," she said softly, her voice trembling with both love and fear. "Do you recognize us? Do you recognize me?"

Feng Yu opened his mouth, but the words caught in his throat. He stared at the graceful woman in front of him, at the dignified man standing behind her, at the icy young woman by the door. His heart knew nothing of them.

"..."

After a long silence, he forced a smile. "I… don't remember. Everything feels… blank."

The words fell heavy into the room.

"What?" His mother's face drained of color. "You… don't remember?"

Feng Yu rubbed his forehead, wincing slightly. "It's like I'm in a fog. I don't know who you are, or why I'm here… I just know my name is Lin Yun. Beyond that… nothing."

The doctors exchanged knowing glances. One of them cleared his throat carefully.

"This is likely post-traumatic amnesia. His heart stopped for several minutes. Oxygen deprivation could have damaged memory storage. In cases like this, recovery is possible—but it may take time."

The Lin patriarch's jaw tightened, but he exhaled slowly. "It doesn't matter. Whether you remember or not, you are alive. That is what matters."

His wife, however, broke into quiet sobs, clinging to his hand. "You've already come back to me once. If you never remember anything else, I'll still be happy just to have you alive."

Feng Yu's chest tightened strangely. In his past life, he had never known a mother's warmth or a father's firm but steady gaze. Though these feelings weren't meant for him, he couldn't stop his heart from stirring.

So this is what it feels like to be cared for…

---

From the corner, Mei Yulan studied him with narrowed eyes.

Amnesia. That explained the blank look, the polite speech, the lack of recognition. The spoiled brat she knew would never sit there calmly like this.

But her instincts screamed something else. The way he held himself, the way his eyes seemed sharper, steadier—it was as if a completely different soul sat in that body.

Her expression remained cold, but deep inside, unease gnawed at her.

---

After some time, the Lin patriarch dismissed the doctors and attendants. "He needs rest. No more disturbances tonight."

Even Mei Yulan's parents pulled their daughter away, leaving only the Lin couple behind for a short while longer. Eventually, after making sure their son was stable, they too left reluctantly.

The ward finally fell into silence.

Feng Yu exhaled slowly, sinking against the pillows. "Alone at last…"

But just as the words left his lips—

[Ding!]

A crisp sound echoed in his mind, and a translucent screen appeared before his eyes.

[System Activation Complete]

[Welcome, Host: Feng Yu]

[Current Identity: Lin Yun – Sole Heir of the Lin Family]

[Initialization… Complete]

Feng Yu froze, his eyes widening. "The System… it's real."

Lines of text flowed before him:

[Main Function: Assist the Host in survival, growth, and dominance in this world.]

[Special Condition: Due to host's unique soul origin, all wasted opportunities of the original Lin Yun will be reassigned to the Host.]

A rush of excitement surged in Feng Yu's chest.

"All the things this spoiled brat wasted… they're mine now?"

His lips curled into a grin. His heart pounded.

After years of living as a faceless office worker, after dying in obscurity—this was his chance. A new life, with wealth, power, and a System that promised endless growth.

This wasn't just reincarnation.

This was the start of an entirely new destiny.
