After years of fighting, the battle ended but came at a price.
General Xue Lei and his two men were the only survivors.
For their entire battalion was wiped out despite their best strategies and counterattacks as the enemy turned out to be always two or even three steps ahead.
They could be enslaved or even executed at their enemies' pleasure but unexpectedly, their ruler was in great mood and decided to spare them for their valor in battle and even willing to sacrifice for one another.
However, their mission failed even to the best of their abilities to prove otherwise. Dai Chong and his fellow Dai prisoners - long held in captivity and whom they were supposed to rescue - were not to be released despite Xue Lei trying to convince otherwise.
With their Gladiators destroyed and no more special treatment from Shibeibu King Monarch Zengis, they had to make their way back on foot. But considering the circumstances, Xue Lei and his men felt lucky to be still alive The only obstacle now standing in their way were mountainous terrains and weather which could hinder their return and even endanger their lives.
The journey was long and tiring. The only things that kept them alive were the rations that King Monarch Zengis had provided for their journey. Why he chose to spare their lives remained a mystery. But that was no longer an issue to Xue Lei. He was grateful to be still alive even though losing most of his men - including the woman he loved and was supposed to marry - still burned in his mind.
After a week or so, they finally saw the other side of Chong An, where they had been stationed and built their base to fight the Shibeibu forces for years. Beyond was the valley of Jiang He which even from afar, they could sense the famous waterfall lakes. After such a long time, they were finally home.
However just before they could explore further, a hovercraft suddenly descended before them out of blue. Its sleek oval hull in white paint along with the all-too-familiar blue Dai logo on its fin tail was what this small yet state-of-the-art transport comprised of. The blue bubble roof glass lifted as if to open its mouth and out emerged two Dai Imperial Commanders Fu and Kuang.
"General Xue Lei!" The former greeted him with a smile that he and his two men were not comfortable with. His bald head and pencil-thin moustache somehow gave away his sly appearance despite his assuring smile. "You are finally back in time! We are here to escort you back to the capital. Our Majesty is expecting you and our Highness who also returned today."
"Our Highness returns? From where?" Xue Lei asked for he had lost touch with her and his brother since he spent last few years fighting. His impression of her was still a little girl whom he assumed must have grown into a beautiful young woman by now.
"You know when we reach there." Kuang replied. Along with his partner, he bid Xue Lei to sit in the back of hover carriage.
Just as Xue's men were about to do the same, Commander Fu raised his hand to stop them.
"Sorry, our Majesty ordered us to escort only General Xue Lei." Commander Fu said. "You both have to continue on foot."
"What?" One of them tried to protest only to be cut off by Xue Lei.
"Zhan Bao, please do not be rude! The fact we are still alive, we should be grateful. If bringing only me back on transport is our Majesty's order, so be it."
"But General, without us…" Zhan Bao tried to express his views as well.
"I will be fine. I see you in capital." Xue Lei assured him even though he himself admitted in heart that he was not comfortable with this whole arrangement which seemed to be planned but not exactly what he anticipated. But as a commander willing to lay down for his homeland, who was he to oppose the current Emperor?
"You heard your commander." Commander Fu chipped in. "An order is an order. Don't tell me after years of fighting in the terrains, your mind has been clouded?"
With that said, Xue Lei boarded the hovercraft with Commanders Fu and Kuang. At the front pilot's key command, the top bubble glass came to cover them. It rotated its wheels to ninety degrees before lifting off into the skies.
Despite still being in hostile war against the Shibeibu Empire, Emperor Dai Zhong did not allow himself to be worried but rather relaxed and enjoyed his life to the fullest.
Even though he was now the ruler, he was still single and after passing of his parents, the only other person he was concerned with was his sister who would be making her way back in a while after spending years in Dai Academy on education and national service.
He was having his own make-merry time in Dai Garden Hall with his two concubines Xiang Er and Ming Zhu while watching the magicians performing their stunts and tricks through mysterious boxes, ornate containers, props and shimmering cloths become vessels of disappearing and reappearing acts.
On the table before their throne chairs were plates of roasted turkey, fruits, jug of wine and cups. Just as Dai Zhong was about to enjoy himself further with his women, Premier Hu entered the chamber with an anxious look.
Kneeling before him, Premier Hu said," Your Majesty, I'm sorry to disturb you at this time but I have something important to discuss with you."
Smiling, Dai Zhong replied, "Not at all, you may rise."
Then turning to his concubines on his left and right, he ordered, "Both of you can leave now. We have fun another day."
Once they were gone, Premier Hu got to his feet and continued, "Your Majesty, I received word from Shibeibu General Tetsuban on behalf of his ruler King Monarch Zengis. They demanded another 100,000 gold bars in taxes."
The moment Dai Zhong heard that, his blood boiled with anger and fists clenched into balls as his response.
"That's outrageous! Haven't I already paid them 30,000 platinum bars last week?"
"Your Majesty, I'm afraid things may not be as simple this time."
"I don't get what you mean." Dai Zhong felt puzzled., unable to comprehend what he just heard.
"My men got news that General Xue Lei is still alive and now making his way back here in their company." The Grand Chancellor explained. "By right they lost the war, should be captured and killed by our enemies. But their king was in great mood and decided to spare their lives."
"So?" Dai Zhong asked, refusing to allow that to affect his mood further.
"Your Majesty, with all due respect, even though General Xue Lei fought many battles and was popular with our people," Premier Hu elaborated. "His loyalty still lies with your late father Dai Ci and your older brother Dai Chong who was still somewhere out there and probably remained in captivity with other Dais who were seized in the First Capital City invasion.
Even though you are Emperor yes, the late Emperor Dai Ci and your father had issued a decree that as long as your older brother Dai Chong remains alive, he is still the rightful ruler.
Suppose if General Xue finally succeeds in rescuing him and make his way back here, you must step down as Emperor immediately."
Upon hearing that, Dai Zhong felt humiliated and paranoid. While his brother was his family member, he refused to give way even though his father's decision was made. For in his view, once selected as Emperor, he should remain as Emperor.
"Given the current situation," Premier Hu continued. "It is impossible to continue fighting against the Shibeibu Empire who now have superiority in numbers, resources and technology. Because if we do, it is a matter of time before we lose again and this new capital city will again be seized like the last So your Majesty, please look at the big picture."
"Do you have any better suggestions?" Dai Zhong asked, narrowing his eyes in clear suspicion.
"May I suggest we sentence General Xue Lei? Because with him out of the way, things will be much easier to manage. We can simply place him on charges of treason and keeping enemy weapons which suffices as grave offence in our Dai law."
"You want me to execute General Xue? I won't!" Dai Zhong protested. "As you said earlier, he is very popular with the civilians and military for what he contributed. Premier Hu, you may have overstepped your authority."
"Your Majesty, may I remind you that while family matters are important, national matters are even more important? No doubt General Xue has gained popularity, he remains a major threat to you long-term. Though he helped to protect you and your Highness, please also remember that I am the one looking after you from childhood to what you are now."
"Then what do you suggest, Premier Hu?" Dai Zhong asked again.
"Because of your sister and Princess Dai Yu's return from Dai Academy training, we shall still invite him along with her as guests of honour at upcoming banquet. After which, we carry out what needs to be done."
"That certainly makes sense," The Emperor agreed. "My sister has always been headstrong even as woman. Given the current situation, I shall leave this to you, Premier Hu."
"Thank you, your Majesty. As long as you remain ruler, I Premier Hu and my men shall remain loyal to you now and forever."
Both smiled at what would be the start of their conspiracy.
Outside palace, the Capital City was bursting with life.
It was unique in combination of technology and traditions in which people found convenience and efficient in where they go and how they took to reach from one place to another. Life was pretty much routine for the civilians living there.
Skyline towers gleamed and complimented perfectly with the clouds and skies while nature in the form of thickly clustered trees gelled perfectly. Hover carriages and automobiles were both busy in the lanes above, on and even underground for transportation and delivery of goods and services.
Within the city were state-of-the-art dome-towered office buildings and apartments. If anyone was to travel on foot and explore, he or she could see even more wonders of various stores, malls, inns, caverns and even brothels.
Today marked a special occasion as for the first time, news spread of three special homecomings. The Highness and Emperor's sister Princess Dai Yu, Li Neng Yuan - son of Chief Advisor Li Teng of Imperial Royal Circle and General Xue Lei - after years of fighting Shibeibu enemies on the outskirts of Chong An mountains separating both kingdoms.
Everyone was talking and beaming with joy. As Capital City was smaller than its predecessor, news spread rapidly. But with all these ongoing activities based on what would be a triple special occasion worth celebrating, no one noticed what was going within the vicinity.
Which was Shibeibu Empire had dispatched espionage spies to blend with the Dai Capital City crowd for their agenda. Though they looked like ordinary locals, they were skilled operatives to gather information and insights into how the Dai system operated from military, law enforcement and civilians front before relaying the vital intel to their commander.
Sumeijian was glad that no one noticed her and her companion Chanqinqer.
Not in their outfits more tailored for men and with their long hair curled and tied in a ball that almost resembled boy hair style.
Though she was born of privileged background, her family circumstances did not allow her to travel and explore freely which happened to be what she wanted. As a result, she was bored to death and if she allowed herself to be confined, she would lose her mind sooner or later in confinement of four walls.
Compared to where she came from, the Capital City was much more beautiful and easier for her to adopt, and she was certain her companion would feel the same.
Given the fact that her father had the strong upper hand and full control, she felt more confident of getting what she want even though she knew in heart that what she had done so far was obviously against the principles and values of what she should as woman.
However weird she and her companion looked, Sumeijian was proud of her look. No makeup, lipstick, jewellery and ornaments that typical women should wear, especially those from high status. The lesser people noticed them, the better.
But her joy was short-lived as she noticed two men starting at her and her companion from behind opposite building pillars within the mirror reflection. Quickly shutting down the mirror lid, she signalled to Chanqinger that they were being noticed and needed to move to evade them.
Just as she wondered how and where to get rid of whoever was going after them, she noticed the two-storey tea cavern nearby. Taking no chances, she pulled her handmaiden along and headed there.
Dai Long Teahouse is among the most popular drinking, eating and entertainment places in Dai Capital City.
Whether locals or foreigners from surrounding lands in regions and terrains of Dai Dynasty, most perceived this as the go-to-priority place on their journey. Especially after a long ride on hover carriages or traditional versions and horses.
A two-storey building with the bottom of mostly exposed to outdoors at lower rates and the upper with most tables and chairs indoor with cool conditioning but at higher rates. But whichever choices guests make, they have the unique experience of going through Dai Dynasty history from its origins of several dynasties eventually forming into one, the battles and wars fought, won and loss, as well as weaponry and mecha development the government and military now deployed.
All those via both paintings by best artists, holograms showcasing old and now muted video reels of male and female narrators explaining.
With all these, Dai Long Teahouse is more than just an eating, relaxing and resting haven. It resembles a complete Dai museum with those decorating the walls even though the real one was quite a distance away but closer to palace.
None of those concerned Sumeijian.
All she wanted was to have fun in her own free time doing what she really enjoys doing. Free from the slackers of confinement due to her status, exploring and being immersed in places she had never been to. If not for her companion's insistence to accompany her and the fact that she did not want anyone else to know, she preferred to be alone.
Making sure that they were not followed, Sumeijian and her companion quickly sat upon the oriental bamboo chairs facing the complimentary bamboo table with a clear holo-menu.
"Gentlemen, welcome to Dai Long Teahouse." The waiter greeted them with a warm smile. He was formally dressed in black turbine hat, white clothing with dark tunic. "If you are ready to order, you may simply tap on the menu."
"Ok." That was all Sumeijian could answer.
Her attention was soon drawn to another man wearing a blue turbine hat, white clothing with equally blue tunic. He was telling everyone a story and all audience - whether old or young and however busy they were - paid full attention to him.
"General Xue Lei is not just our national hero.
He is our savior. Along with his sworn brothers Kang Jie, Qiang Shi, Zhan Bao and several others - whose names I can't remember now, they fought bravely and won several battles over our Shibeibu Empire foes.
Our enemies may have an edge in firepower and weaponry but in terms of tactics and critical thinking, this is where our heros come out on tops."
Most customers applauded at his story conclusion. Based on what she heard, Sumeijian realized she was late for this unexpected story. But that did not matter. For whatever the Dais and their military had done and accomplished was really none of her business.
"Thank you for taking your time to listen." The man expressed his gratitude and token payments for his storytelling efforts. "If anyone is willing to place a higher bid than what I now received in total, I will be happy to tell another story of his or her choice."
"What about the twelve elementary dragons of Fantasia and their thousand-year-old war against arch-foes elementary serpents?" A young man sitting with his three companions opposite Sumeijian asked. "I am willing to pay 15,000 platinum tokens."
"Aiyo, that story was so old and long ago!" His other companion - a long green-haired young man - mocked at him in his tone. "Nobody even saw dragons and snakes or even heard of them. Besides it happened on another planet which I don't think anyone here wants to listen. How about Goddess Eternity? I will be more interested to listen and visualize what she looks like without wearing anything!"
"Who is Goddess Eternity related to you? And how dare you make fun of her sexually!" His third companion questioned him. "Storyteller, how about the Red Order Sect in their fight against injustice? I am interested to know their origins and willing to pay 18,000 silver tokens."
"That story even older! I am more interested in Goddess Eternity and willing to come up with 30,000 gold tokens."
At this moment, Sumeijian decided to chip in just to add spice to this interesting bidding conversation-now-turned-war.
"What about King Monarch Zengis winning over first Dai Capital and forming part of his Shibeibu Empire?" Sumeijian looked at what she perceived as arrogant green-haired chap with her own sneer expression. "I am willing to come with 80,000 platinum tokens."
At this moment, the storyteller suddenly turned shell-shocked and pale-faced before answering.
"I'm sorry, sir. While I am open to sharing any story from highest bidder, this is one request I cannot grant you."
"You can't grant? What do you mean you can't grant?" Sumeijian turned angry.
For she disliked being rejected and had never been before. Even though this was the first time, she could not take it to heart. "I like King Monarch Zengis and see him as hero. Why can't I hear story about him?"
"I'm sorry, sir. But we have strict laws here that forbids me to share such tales.
Shibeibu Empire are our enemies and we Dai Dynasty have been and are still at war with them. If the Emperor or any of his soldiers heard and know this, I will be arrested and sentenced."
"Hey young man!" The green-haired young chap called out to her. "You can save your money on your meals."
Then turning to storyteller, he continued, "If you are okay with telling the story of Goddess Eternity, I am willing to double what I just said. 60,000 gold tokens."
"Oh, really? Do you have that amount?" Sumeijian jeered back as her form of reactive retaliation. Being intimated by people of lesser status was the first thing she took to offence and defended herself naturally and immediately.
Making a strange funny face with his tongue sticking out to her, the young chap attempted to take out something from his wrist poach only to discover with - immediate changing to shock expression - that it was not there.
"What's wrong? No money?" She continued her own humiliation. "If you've no money, then don't bother to talk big!"
Turning to her companion Chanqinger, she urged," Let's leave here immediately and find a place to stay for night."
Her companion nodded and together they left the same way they entered, leaving the four men surprised in their stance.
Once they were out of the inn, Sumeijian whistled like a man as she happily took out the wallet token, she managed to steal using her silent mindpower she learnt and put into full effect.
Despite being in argument with storyteller and whoever that young man was, she was not at all distracted but noticed that token somehow hanging out from that green-haired chap's wrist poach.
Compared to being made fun of by his buddies, Kai Seven felt more humiliated by someone he did not know and met for the first time.
It could not be.
The wallet token was in his poach all the while from him leaving his home to being with his buddies.
Unless -
Quickly and instinctively, he dashed out from the Teahouse in pursuit of that young man despite his buddies protesting that he had not paid for the meals and drinks. The very thought of him subject to such humiliation by someone who looked like neither man or woman and behaved badly was bad enough. But to have his wallet token stolen as well due to his neglect was even worse.
It did not take Kai to notice that blue-clothed chap with his companion from distance. He lunged to grab him from behind only to succeed in grabbing his breasts by accident. It was then he realized he made an equally big mistake as the feeling gave him soft warmth emulating more from a woman than man.
Sumeijian was not your everyday average woman.
The moment she felt molested, she instinctively kicked and brought him down even from behind, only to realize her assailant was the same green-haired chap who mocked her earlier.
Even though she was a woman, she did not like to be taken advantage of and learn to defend herself. That was the very first lesson her father taught her at a young age and hired several teachers to coach her in martial arts and weapons fighting besides just education.
"You stole my wallet token!" The chap shouted at her. "Please return to me or else…"
"Or else what? Call the authorities?" Sumeijian carried on her sarcasm, while producing and swinging that token in fun deliberation. "You do that, and I'll charge you as well. For taking advantage of me in front of everybody!"
Seething with rage, the young man got to his feet and charged towards her, only to be immobilized with relative ease.
Sensing his anger, Sumeijian felt even happier. Now feeling sick of that wallet token which she only pickpocketed to humiliate him as her way of revenge, she now returned it to his wrist poach and continued her way.
"Your Highness, are we going to leave him like this? I think you have gone too far."
"Don't worry, he won't die. Besides I immobilized him for a while. After a few minutes, he'll be fine by which I'll be gone. Let's go and find a place to stay."
Seeing her companion equally stunned, Sumeijian yelled at her, "I say let us go! He'll be okay after a while."
Kai Seven became even more confused by what happened to him.
Whoever the fellow was, he or she must be high-skilled in some martial arts or even sorcery as he was not only easily brought down but now totally unable to move however hard he tried.
As expected, his buddies caught up with him and asked him in jest how he managed to end up in this stage which he could not reply. Out of empathy, one of them offered to carry him on his back to his home.
Once he recovered from whatever spell was casted on him, Kai vowed to find and take revenge on the young chap even though the wallet token was now back in his wrist poach.
The Dai Hangar Bay presented a spectacular sight, both in its architectural grandeur and the array of advanced military assets it housed.
The structure, meticulously designed, stood as a testament to Dai's technological prowess and military might. The sleek lines and advanced materials of the hangar created a visually striking backdrop, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the facility.
The enormity of the Dai Hangar Bay was truly awe-inspiring, reflecting the vastness of its internal space housing three battlecruisers, numerous hover bikes, hovercrafts, and various other military vehicles. However, the most notable presence was Gladiator MK battle units, towering machines of war that stood ready for deployment.
The maintenance crews comprised of full-time mecha architects, designers, engineers, and technicians working in shifts diligently to repair, maintain, and prepare the mecha for battle.
Dressed in jumpsuits or uniforms, they were often busy yet fully professional in their tasks.
Other than those, it was also equipped with various tools, equipment, and supply crates to facilitate repairs and resupply missions.
In essence, it was a hub and aerial port of activity.
The lighting in the hangar bay was fully functional and utilitarian, with bright overhead lights to ensure visibility during maintenance and loading procedures.
Three Dai battlecruisers and Gladiator-MKs were parked besides each other for standby in their standard colors of blue and white.
A control center or command post was often present at the entrance to the hangar, where officers and commanders coordinated missions and monitor activities in and outside the bay.
Given the kingdom's precarious situations in past, security measures such as blast doors, guards, and surveillance equipment were in place round the clock against possible Shibeibu attacks which could occur anytime.
Loading ramps and gantries were included for easy access to battlecruisers, both for maintenance purposes and for pilots to board their craft before take-off.
It was also upon one of those that the hovercraft landed upon in company of five integrated bikes rode by Dai soldiers.
Emperor Dai Zhong was pleased to finally see his sister for the first in a long time.
His only regret was not able to see and spend as much time he could with her during her training in Academy due to his huge responsibility in managing as ruler. Because she was his sister, he was more lenient in that he would allow her to leave anytime she missed home and found training too much to bear.
Problem was she remained stubborn, would not want to hear any of those and insisted she be treated like everyone else. Despite being a woman, she became hard on herself given what happened to their parents and their older brother whose whereabouts remained unknown.
Seeing her finally getting to her feet with the help of driver out of hovercraft whose blue bubble glass opened to reveal the seats, he approached her with Premier Hu, Advisor Chen Xi, three servants and six more Dai Imperial soldiers accompanying.
"Dai Er, it is great to see you again," He greeted her. "Look, you are much taller now. Almost reaching my height."
Dai Er was what he preferred to address her as instead of her actual name due to the fact she was younger than him and their family culture.
"It is good to see you too, your Majesty," She was about to take a bow only for him to stop her.
Seeing her beautiful blue tied up hair and face lifted his spirits but when her red eyes worried him.
"You look tired. Your eyes turn red. Are you okay?" Dai Zhong asked, feeling concerned for her health. "Has the training been tough for you or has anyone mistreated you?"
"I'm fine, your Majesty. I've not been sleeping well throughout the journey despite doing my best."
"You need a well-deserved rest, Dai Er. You may proceed to your room and rest for today. I already have servants preparing your bed, new clothes, and shower facilities."
"Thank you, your Majesty." She replied with the same expression. Whatever the reason, Dai Zhong sensed the journey must be long for her.
He signalled to his servants who stepped forward to his sister.
"This way please, your Highness." One of them showed her and her handmaiden the way to the main Dai palace.
Once they were gone, Dai Zhong turned to the Grand Chancellor who in turn nodded with approval. Despite years being apart, he could not sense the same reciprocal he had been expecting from her even when she was normal and fine. But with the Grand Chancellor's help, hopefully he could turn things around eventually.
Despite his sister needing rest and recovery, Emperor Dai Zhong still went ahead with the fireworks and unicorn dance celebrations.
It was not just to celebrate his sister's return but an annual event to commemorate the anniversary of new Dai Capital City he and his current regime had painstakingly built following Shibeibu invasion of where he and his sister originated from more than a decade ago.
Think of this as national holiday any country will host and celebrate their independence or formation. But for Dai Dynasty, this event was more significant than any other in calendar.
Not just to him, his commanders and officials of Imperial Royal Circle but to all people who choose to elect him as ruler, stick to him and played pivotal roles into building the kingdom, cities, towns and cultivating the remaining land for agriculture despite their limited resources and numbers.
It was an event worth celebrating and commemorating even without his sister who, understandably, needed time to rest and recover. Because everyone played an important role in rebuilding the Dai Dynasty as civilian, soldier and official, Emperor Dai Zhong decided to make this a public event in which anyone is free to witness and join in the celebrations.
The event began with the royal march and parade of Dai military soldiers and commanders standing in their usual routine formation and marching upon the parade leader's command outside the main Dai Garden's arch building. It was a formal yet magnificent sight to behold beyond words except the fact they were all clad in their standard white and blue armor with helmets. The only exception were the commanders who had a choice to select other colors based on their ranks, years of service and contributions on top of uniform white.
Following that were the entry of Emperor Dai Zhong and his Imperial Royal Circle of high-ranking ministers and officials escorted by those soldiers completing their hour march. While his Circle elite were seated at long Dai Qin seats with tables made of finest wood by best carpenters carefully selected and hired on opposite flank, Dai Zhong himself sat on the mobile throne and uppermost royal banquet table with his concubines Xiang Er and Ming Zhu on his left and right.
Once everyone was seated and parade ended, the Grand Chancellor rose to his feet and turned to Dai Zhong.
"Your Majesty, now that most are here, you may commerce the proceedings." He urged.
Dai Zhong nodded before announcing, "In commemoration of our capital city and kingdom rebuilt, may peace and prosperity continue to be blessed upon us and let the event began!"
The eunuchs - dressed in all white robes with blue tunic, turban hats and standing in linear formation - echoed the Majesty's last four words.
"Let the event began!"
The customary event comprised of three key components which were brought to life by best entertaining performers from Dai Opera Arts - designed to cultivate arts and entertainment through training students to the best professional artistes.
Upon hearing the announcement by eunuchs, they began performing.
Beginning with fireworks which were a dazzling spectacle to behold and remembering. They represented the seven rainbow colors grasping the senses and provoking a sense of wonder and excitement.
Next up was Unicorn Dance.
Which turned out to be a vibrant and captivating performance deeply rooted in Dai insignia, often seen in armor, flags, unforms, and cultural events like this.
This traditional yet unique dance featured intricately designed unicorn costumes and highly skilled performers who bring the mythical unicorn to life. It became a moment of cultural pride and communal joy transcending Dai generations and unites communities.
Typically consisted of a white unicorn head with a horn, gaping mouth and serene eyes. Its body was made of fabric, often adorned with ornate patterns and vibrant colors, and carried by four skilled performers.
Two controlled its front legs while the other two in control of its hind legs.
Their movements are synchronized and mimic the movements from playful leaps to partial rising postures with protruding front legs and hind legs firmly footed yet balanced on ground.
The performers were not just skilled in dance but also in martial arts given their national service training, as the performance included acrobatic feats, somersaults, and challenging maneuvers. Their agility and precision created an awe-inspiring spectacle that captivates the audience.
Often portrayed as majestic horse with a single horn protruding from its forehead, its most distinctive feature was its glistening, pure-white coat, which shimmers like freshly fallen snow in the sunlight.
Its body was typically long, slender, and ethereal, adding to the unicorn's otherworldly and regal appearance while its eyes were deep and soulful, with an almost otherworldly wisdom within their gaze.
They exuded an aura of serenity and grace, and those fortunate enough to make eye contact with a unicorn often feel a profound sense of peace and wonder.
As the dance unfolded, crowds increased in numbers to witness the spectacle. Children and adults watched with wide eyes and infectious smiles, drawn into the story being told through the unicorn's grace and elegant movements. The energy turned palpable and filled the atmosphere with what the festival should be.
Amidst the crowd, Sumeijian and her companion Chanqinger were attracted to Dai Unity Festival as well.
They still had not found a suitable place to stay and Sumeijian had an intuition they were still being watched. Hearing the local townsfolk talking about the festival and many stopping whatever they were doing just to join in the festival at the Dai Pavilion, Plateau and Tower Hall. Leaving no chances, she urged her companion along to follow them.
The fireworks and unicorn dance performance momentarily captivated them when all sudden, she noticed the same green-haired young man whom she overcame with ease and his same companions. Even with the crowd increasing, her sharp eyes and still fresh memory instantly recognized them.
Though she had won over him, she was not satisfied. Instinctively and leaving her companion still immersed in Dai cultural performances, she gathered pace and went after him.
Kai Seven immediately recognized her as well.
By right as a guy, he should be the one going after her since he only made fun of her and she in retaliation, pickpocketed him using some mindpower and then immobilized him with some magic arts he was still trying to comprehend.
Fortunately, the effects wore off and he was now fine, though he had a hard time explaining to his father and god sister what had just happened. His companions - of lower intellect - had even harder time to explain and were accused by his father into being bad influence on him.
Yet he was now terrified of her. For he could sense she was not as what she appeared and given the fact that he was an ordinary civilian who knew nothing of martial arts. Having been expelled from National Service for getting into fights and nearly killing someone, he did not want to get into any more trouble. Especially with tough Dai laws and him offending several people in military service before.
The only things that kept him alive and living normally were his father and reputation as accurate fortune teller. So instead of heading into direct confrontation like last time, he decided to turn and run as fast as he can away from the crowd.
Yet his new enemy - whoever she was - refused to give up. Not even when they were on the 13-arch white palace bridge leading back into town.
Just as Sumeijian was about to gain advantage over him again in speed, she heard horses galloping and someone announcing, "Please make way for our West District major and commander!"
Turning around, she found herself looking at the convoy of ten Dai Imperial troopers in their standard blue and white armor - like what she just witnessed in National Parade moments ago - walking on foot and carrying banners of Dai Dynasty logo and slogan.
Nothing unusual.
However, she soon found herself attracted to what was behind them. Those Dai soldiers were nothing but the horse rider they were escorting - was entirely different.
She found herself looking at the most handsome man. His hair was blue-raven, his face was almost perfect if not for the emotionless firm look and his attire of blue cloak and Dai Imperial uniform of pure white, blue stripes and belt with again Dai unicorn logo emblazed on his left side of chest immersed her that whatever thoughts she had of that green-haired troublemaker were forgotten in seconds. Most importantly, the way he rode his horse with elegance gave her the impression that he was a well-seasoned warrior even at young age.
Though she did not know him, she immediately concluded him to be her exact Prince Charming. Even though they passed by her to continue their way, she was still thinking about him.
When suddenly, rain descended upon from the night skies.
The townsfolk hurried back to their homes and shophouses, closing doors and windows to avoid what could be a long rainy night. Water droplets fell upon her blond hair and sky-blue attire and by what she saw, she could only assume the downpour to be heavy
Kai Seven felt instantly relieved when he finally lost sight of what he perceived as half-male-and-half-female pursuer.
Half male in the sense that she was wearing the man attire and did not behave like a woman. Not to mention what she did to him as in outsmarting him twice in a row without him being able to defend himself properly. And half female because of him accidentally touching her assets before realizing he was she.
Just to make sure he was no longer followed, Kai climbed up the pine tree. He might not be skilled in fighting and agility but when it came to climbing tree and then Dai brothel wall, they were second nature to him. Not just because of his short time in Dai military training but because they were what he did even as a kid.
When he finally landed on foot from concrete wall, the impact took a momentarily toil on his back and he decided to rest against another pine tree to gather his energy and stop panting from all the running.
After a while, he heard female voices cheering behind another tree. Slowly moving forward without being careful not to be spotted by anyone, he soon found himself looking at all the beautiful women dancing and celebrating the Dai Unity Festival.
As a man, he found himself seduced by those. As they were dancing and cheering, they were suddenly stopped by another two women who looked to be their seniors. One was in green and yellow robes while the other in elegant white and pink - which almost resembled Dai concubine - as far as he could remember during his time in Academy.
"What are you all doing here?" The lady wearing green and yellow asked in a rather demanding tone.
"Today is Dai Unity Festival so we are all celebrating like others." One of the dancing ladies replied.
"It's getting late soon. Please return to your rooms and sleep. We've a long day tomorrow."
"Yes, my lady." Having said that, the dancers excused themselves and left through the main gate accompanied by a few guards.
When they were all gone, the lady - in green and yellow - turned to her senior in pink and white before saying, "Lady Li Shi, our Highness has returned and is expecting you."
Nodding, they made their way to the stone boat in the lake via another shorter arch bridge.
Not wanting to miss any chances, Kai was determined to follow them. Looking around, he spotted a rather small wooden canoe and decided to row his way to that artificial stone boat within the reservoir.
Though Princess Dai Yu needed rest and recovery from the long journey from Academy to palace, she woke up in the middle of the night and felt much more refreshed even though she knew in mind she needed more rest and recovery.
Despite being an adult now able to think and even fend for herself, she could never forget what had happened to her family and the humiliation she had suffered years ago as a child. She wanted someone to talk to and shared what was troubling her. And it was not her brother or any of his Imperial Royal Circle members who had an upper hand in everything but with little or no regards for her and anyone else.
So naturally, Lady Li Shi happened to be that person she wanted to see and talk to right after her brother, due to her personality that she was able to feel more natural and completely at ease with.
"Welcome back, your Highness." She and her aide Madam Huang bowed before her.
"You may dispense with the formalities." Dai Yu replied. Despite her status, she never saw them as her subordinates but ordinary people and friends.
"Thank you, your Highness." They both replied at the same time. Once on their feet, Lady Li Shi turned to Madam Huang and instructed, "Madam Huang, you may go back now. I and the Highness need to discuss something important in private."
"As you wish, Lady Li Shi," Madam Huang obliged before taking her leave the same way she entered on the arch bridge.
Once she was in distance from them, Lady Li Shi turned back to Dai Yu asking, "You're supposed to be resting after a long journey, your Highness. What do you like to see me about?"
Kai Seven was absolutely stunned beyond words.
For not only the Highness was beautiful in her elegant white robes with sky-blue tunic, but she was also tall as woman. From what he saw, he believed those made her stand out from other women besides her status.
Even from distance, he could still see them clearly outside the artificial stone boat. From what he read, remembered and now saw for himself, the stone boat was another prominent landmark of Dai Dynasty and palace.
Its design and architectural beauty had been regarded as among the finest arts that added certain uniqueness and beauty even if it was constructed entirely from stone based on founder Yao Qing style.
Besides just stationary transport, it also served as lake-based teahouse and now meeting place for the Highness and Lady Li Shi - if he heard and able to pronounce to himself correctly.
"You are the only person I can think of to speak and share my thoughts with." Dai Yu replied naturally.
"What do you like to tell me about that you cannot share with your subordinates and even your brother?" Lady Li Shi asked, looking puzzled and yet still concerned over her situation.
"The Imperial Royal Circle has been clouded in darkness of deceit and manipulation. Even though I'm the Highness yes, I have just returned and no control even after years of training in Academy. I could sense that strongly.
I like to ask you if you have any news of General Xue Lei and my older brother Dai Chong.
Even though I can ask my other brother in my capacity, I cannot help feeling that he has changed since becoming Emperor.
Despite knowing that he has been captured, there have been no action from him to mount a rescue mission so far. He just spends his time having fun with his concubines not just in Dai Unity festival but other events he organizes.
Though what happened has been so long ago, I can never forget my parents and the attack that separated us all."
"Perhaps the Majesty has other arrangements," Lady Li Shi said. "I do not know anything about your other brother Dai Chong. There had been no news of him so far. But of General Xue Lei, I heard that he had been released by Shibeibu's King Monarch Zengis and is now back here."
"What? General Xue Lei has just returned?" Dai Yu became surprised by what her only close and trusted friend just mentioned.
"I'm not entirely certain. Another thing I heard so far was most of his battalion had been wiped out and by right he should be captured and executed as well. But for reasons unknown, Shibeibu King Monarch Zengis was in good mood and decided to release him with his only two remaining men."
"Lady Li Shi, if what you said is true, I'm going to ask my other brother." Dai Yu became adamant, wondering what else he was hiding from her. She could be paranoid, but her head kept telling her things had changed more than what she expected since her return from Academy.
"Your Highness, forgive me for being upfront." Lady Li Shi added. "If what you told me about the Imperial Royal Circle is now in darkness of deceit and manipulation, then even more you should be careful. Especially on what you say and the circumstances you are in and people you associate with in palace. From my observation and what I heard so far, things had indeed changed tremendously while you were still in Academy training.
Premier Hu has been getting stronger in his rank and influence of most officials and imperial guards besides those already under his command. For some reasons known only to himself, he managed to manipulate the Majesty as well."
Dai Yu nodded, acknowledging those as facts.
"Your Highness, I'm sure you have not eaten since noon. Do you like to try my speciality Dai An snack with wine?"
Because she had already entrusted this unique teahouse boat to Lady Li Shi, the latter had been the owner for the last 3 years and employed some of the best chefs to prepare meals for special guests.
"Thank you for your hospitality but I'm not hungry." She answered before taking her turn to ask. "Do you remember the song Fireflies In Winter?"
"Yes, I do. Your Highness," replied Lady Li Shi.
"If you don't mind, I like to sing this song. It is also a poem that keeps going on in my mind that subconsciously, I can feel the music vibrations that it naturally became a song to me."
"Since you like to sing, I like to play the Dai Qin strings in rhythm".
"Please do. Music along with song makes me feel better."
Sitting on the stone stool, Lady Li Shi began playing the heart-shaped musical instrument with long strings on the stone table as she began singing:
Amidst the cold snowing winter,
Fireflies appeared and began lighting in appearance and aura,
Warming the otherwise harsh cold climate.
As well as all creatures left out in the cold.
Yet the source of fireflies came from the most unlikely place,
The campfire of a huge tent house serving as command base,
Where commanders and soldiers stood and watched over
The prisoners pleading for mercy even as commoners doing nothing wrong.
Year end's coming,
The harvest is over,
New year and dawn's coming,
All those commoners want is to go home and be reunited with families,
Without wanting to have anything do the military agenda.
Yet their pleas fell on deaf ears,
No matter how much they missed their loved ones,
Their destiny is no longer in their control.
The only thing they can do is secretly whisper to those fireflies in mind,
Hoping they can bring their messages to their loved ones.
Still waiting for them and praying nothing'll happen.
Being able to fly freely without being seen by most naked eyes, the fireflies obliged and delivered what they are told even when the winter remains harsh and cold.
At this point, Dai Yu kept silent with her eyes closed, praying to Goddess Eternity in mind that both General Xue Lei and her other brother Dai Chong would be safe, return and very soon they would be reunited as siblings and family.
Yet somehow, she could not help feeling that Lady Li Shi was more familiar with that song as she continued playing that instrument for the next few minutes until the very end and she was satisfied. That further convinced her that she made the right choice in being open with her.
Kai Seven was equally enchanted with female duo music and song.
From what he saw, the Highness had all the attributes he was looking for in an ideal woman even though he knew he could never even get close to her because of their difference in status and height.
To be honest, he knew absolutely nothing about music and singing but even as spectator, though not in ideal settings, he found himself liking them all. The Highness could sing as well as she looked.
So engrossed was he that he failed to notice that the canoe began to give way underneath his body since he was leaning forward to see and hear better what they were like and talking about.
Perhaps too close that he was out of where he should be positioned in first place.
Worse still, the oars he was rowing seconds earlier fell into lake waters and he soon found himself falling into the dark green waters with the splash which attracted the attention of both Princess and Lady Li Shi.
"Who's that?" The latter asked.
Realizing that he could be detected for unlawful trespass and intrusion, Kai had no alternative but to submerge into water as cover even if it was way above his height. But from what he could detect, and underestimate was the determination of both women in finding out where the noise came from. To make his act more convincing, he decided to make a long high-pitched toad trill even if imitating sounds were not his natural talent.
"I guess it is just toad making noises, your Highness," Lady Li Shi glanced at exactly the spot above him. "Nothing to worry about."
Problem was even with his amateur act; the Highness did not look entirely convinced. Instead, she put her finger to her lips before producing something else with her other hand.
By the time Kai realized what it was, he was scared to death. It turned out to be a dagger that flew past his ear by inches and stuck on the lakebed right below his feet. It did not help that the water was now entering his eyes, mouth and nostrils that he could barely see.
"Maybe you're right, Lady Li Shi," The Highness said. "But just to make sure it was not something or someone else, it's better to take precautions."
"I understand, your Highness. Looking at the dazzle, it is going to rain. Shall we move inside and have a drink?"
The Highness nodded and both women retreated into the warmth comfort of the stone boat and teahouse. While it was momentary relief, it was getting worse for Kai Seven who wondered whether he should just get out of the lake and risk being seen or swim to where he came from.
Whichever option, he needed to act fast before weather got worse.
Even after her Prince Charming had long gone, Sumeijian could not help thinking about him.
Despite just one moment, her mind had been preoccupied with his looks and how he rode that horse. Even from afar, she could still see his blue raven hair and handsome face. Even though she was not related and did not know him, she was determined that he - whoever he might be - would be the one she wanted to go after by hook or crook.
She remembered vaguely that someone called him West District Commander or something. But that did not matter to her. So long as she wanted something, she would make sure she gets and no one else.
Unfortunately, her fantasy thoughts were interrupted by the rain which became heavier. To make situation worse, all the shophouses, inns and caverns were closed, and she soon found herself wandering alone on the streets.
Then someone called out to her.
"Second Highness!"
Turning around, she saw her companion Chanqinger running towards her. From what she saw, the latter looked just as anxious.
"Chanqinger! Where've you been?" Sumeijian began to feel irritated and decided to rebuke her even though she knew it was her fault to go after the green-haired young punk only to bump into her Prince Charming.
"I'm about to ask you the same question. I have been watching the performances."
"Watch, watch, watch! Is that all you can do?" Sumeijian felt even more incensed by her subordinate talking back to her. "Rain's getting heavier. We need to find shelter fast!"
But their reunion did not last long as right at this moment, a group of four black masked men appeared from nowhere to right in front of them, carrying short swords and daggers. In any circumstances, anyone would and should feel alarmed, thinking they were robbers and either gave in or resisted.
Not Sumeijian and her companion since they both knew who those men were, and why they had been monitoring earlier on the streets and now going after them.
She recognized two of them staring at them earlier in the day while exploring Capital City before asking.
"Aren't you going to let us off despite knowing who we're?" Sumeijian asked calmly even though she knew that feeling would not last long.
"Ha! Letting you off?" Their black-clothed with crimson tunic leader jeered. "If we do, we'll be the ones facing death!"
Signaling to his men, he and his other aide would take on Sumeijian while the other two would handle her companion.
But Sumeijian proved to be more than a match given her years of training and experience in martial arts and military training despite her high status and who her father was. As the guy in black with blue tunic closed on in her with the dagger, she easily evaded the blow with her right arm before disarming him with a round-horse kick to his belly.
It was the leader's turn to attack.
Again, he proved to be no match for her as his short sword hit empty air and before he knew, she was already right behind him unexpectedly and kicked him in the back so hard that he fell face to the wet ground and short sword flying in the distance.
However, the same could not be said for her inexperienced but pretending to be just to impress upon her aide. While Chanqinger managed to evade the guy with orange tunic by blocking his dagger blow, she was stabbed from behind by another in green. Blood came out of her mouth and as she collapsed, her assailant simply extracted the dagger.
"Chanqinger!" Sumeijian screamed, feeling renewed rage and determination to avenge her companion. Only to see red powdery smoke hurled into her face by that assailant who proved to be even more cunning than she thought.
True enough to her intuition, her confidence did not last long as she already knew what her assailants were capable of and after witnessing her companion's demise. After inhaling the red smoke, her vison became blurry, and body turned weak. She became exhausted and no matter how hard she tried to overcome, she simply did not have the strength nor will.
As she blacked out, her assailants closed in on her.
Unlike her companion, they had no intention of killing her because her status was far more important. They had orders to find and bring her back home within a certain deadline which they now had to comply.
Their leader produced a huge black dumping bag which they decided to put her in and carried her back to their master who gave them the orders. Once that was accomplished, all they needed to do was to leave the Capital City and head back where they came from.
It almost worked.
If not for the convoy which unexpectedly appeared and saw what they were doing. They comprised of obviously ten Dai Imperial troopers and a young raven-haired man riding on horse as their obvious leader.
Even though Li Neng Yuan had never met nor knew them personally, he already sensed those men were up to no good.
Years of training in Dai Academy education and military had certainly paid off for his sharp senses which he just showcased and what he was about to do. Everyone was running back to their homes for shelter but those four men - whoever they were - were behaving suspiciously in plain sight.
Before he thought, he already opened his mouth and demanded to know what they were up to.
"What're you doing in the middle of the night?" He questioned them in strict tone that he knew he naturally inherited from his father besides the commanders who trained and nurtured him.
The four men refused to reply. Instead, they were desperately stuffing something into a rather huge black bag. What it certainly was to most commoners, it was obviously used to conceal and dump bodies from his intuition.
Refusing to take silence as the answer, he immediately leapt from his horse and right before them even before his guards could react.
Two of them started to attack him as their aggressive reply with their daggers. But he had no issues disarming them in a matter of seconds with his block arm defensive techniques and with his front kick, sent them to the ground, crutching in pain.
Just as he was about to go after the other two carrying the huge black bag of whatever they wanted to hide, a green-haired man suddenly appeared from nowhere and bumped into one of them. That caused a chain reaction which resulted in those men dropping the black bag and running in obvious fear.
Seeing the green-haired man in pain, Neng Yuan instantly approached and helped him to his feet before asking, "Are you okay? Are you hurt?"
The young man did not reply. Instead, he pulled away and ran as fast as he could to wherever he appeared from or wanted to go.
With just his guards around then, he turned his attention to the black bag. Upon uncovering it, he discovered to his shock that it was another young fellow in white clothing and sky-blue tunic lying unconscious.
As the rain grew heavier and they were heading back home anyway, he signalled to his men to carry the unconscious guy - whoever he was - and put him on his horse pack.
Upon doing so and as they continued their way, Li Neng Yuan was amazed at how things had changed since leaving Dai Capital City as a child.
