Ares's POV
The moment the double doors swung open, the boardroom went silent.
Not quiet.
Silent.
The kind of silence that thickens the air and presses against your skin.
I stepped in first, keeping Jasmine behind me like I promised. Her breathing was fast… too fast… but she didn't ask me to move. She stayed close enough that I could feel the faint tremble in her steps.
The board members were already seated. Faces stiff. Eyes sharp. Hands folded in practiced calm. The long marble table reflected the bright overhead lights, almost blinding.
Every single one of them was watching us.
Waiting.
Judging.
Zara sat near the far end, legs crossed, lips painted with a cold smile. She didn't look nervous. She looked excited… like a wolf who heard the gates had finally opened.
I ignored her.
I pulled Jasmine's chair out for her. She sat slowly, keeping her shoulders straight even though her hands were shaking under the table.
Good.
Nerves meant she cared.
