Chapter 12 – The Elder's Warning
The ruins were silent, but the weight of history pressed down on James like a living thing. Every shadow seemed to breathe, every broken stone whispered the stories of those who had fallen before him. Blade Echo II hummed faintly in his hand, a reminder that the System—unstable, corrupted—was now responding to him, even if just barely.
Lira trailed behind, her eyes scanning every corner. "Are you sure this is safe?" she asked, voice tight with worry.
James exhaled sharply, adjusting the dagger in his grip. "Safe? No. Necessary? Absolutely. I have to understand these Fragments, or I'll never survive the Hunters. Or the Cycle."
She shook her head, biting her lip. "I just… don't want to lose you."
James glanced at her, a ghost of a smile forming. "Then stay close. You keep me human."

Testing the Fragment
He moved deeper into the ruins, stepping carefully over ash and rubble. James could feel the Fragment inside him pulsing, guiding him. Not with words, but with a sensation—like the tug of a thread he had to follow.
[System Alert: Fragment Resonance Increasing]
[Warning: Stability Volatility]
He ignored the warning. Instead, he focused on controlling the energy, feeling it weave through his body, then his dagger. A small training area appeared before him—a collapsed courtyard with enough room to maneuver.
James raised the dagger, visualizing the movements he had seen in the fragmented memories of past reincarnators. He slashed, and the afterimages flickered around him. Blade Echo II responded, duplicating his strike mid-air, creating two simultaneous attacks.
His breath hitched. "It… works!"
But his arms trembled, energy searing through his veins. The Fragment demanded more than he expected.

James ignored the flashing warning. He slashed again, faster, more precise. With each movement, he could feel the echoes of the past reincarnators guiding him, whispering, "Strike true. Strike fast. Survive."
By the time he stopped, sweat dripped from his brow, his muscles screamed, but he felt… different. Stronger. Dangerous. And still fragile.

The First Choice
Suddenly, the whispers changed, becoming urgent:
"A Fragment lies beneath the tower. But the System will punish you if you take it. It will cost you…"
James hesitated. The Fragment promised power, but the System's threats had always been real. One misstep could mean death, instability, or losing control entirely.
"Cost me what?" he muttered, thinking of the Hunter he had barely survived, the wolves, the village, Lira.
"Your body. Your mind. Or both. Only you decide."
Lira stepped forward. "James… don't. You're already pushing yourself too far."
James' hands clenched around the dagger. "I can't be weak. Not anymore. Every Fragment I claim is another step closer to surviving this world… and to understanding why I was thrown here."
She sighed but didn't argue. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears. "Just… be careful."
He nodded, then turned to the crumbling watchtower looming above him. Ash swirled around its base. The Fragment called, glowing faintly through the rubble.
Ascending the Watchtower
James climbed over broken beams, careful not to slip on the ash-strewn stones. Each step made the tower groan ominously. He reached the top, where a faint blue light radiated from beneath the collapsed floorboards.
[System Alert: Fragment Detected – High Energy]
The energy pulsed violently, almost alive. James took a deep breath and reached down. Pain shot through his arms as the Fragment merged with him, sending visions of dozens of past reincarnators flashing across his mind. Their triumphs, failures, and deaths—all collided in a chaotic storm.
[System Stability: 8% – Critical]
He gritted his teeth, forcing his body to absorb the Fragment. His vision blurred; his body ached. But when the storm subsided, Blade Echo II flared with newfound energy.
He staggered, catching himself on the edge of the tower. The Fragment's whispers had calmed, replaced with something clearer:
"You are stronger than they were. But do not forget… you are the Last Cycle. The weight of all before you rests here."
James exhaled shakily. "I… I understand. I think."
Lira ran up to him, helping him down. "You shouldn't have done that. You pushed yourself too far. You could've… died."
James smiled faintly, though his body trembled. "And yet, I didn't. That's the difference."
The Hunter Returns
Their respite was short-lived. From the horizon, the faintest shimmer of movement caught James' eye. A figure approached, tall, clad in dark armor that seemed almost fused to the body beneath. He carried a weapon unlike any James had seen—sleek, lethal, and designed for one purpose: killing reincarnators.
[System Alert: Hostile Reincarnator Detected]
James' pulse quickened. The Hunter had found him.
Lira stepped back, fear flashing in her eyes. "James… what do we do?"
James raised his dagger, Blade Echo II humming. He focused, feeling the Fragment inside him. I'm not weak anymore. I can survive this.
The Hunter's eyes glinted beneath the helmet. He smiled—a cruel, knowing smile. "So… the Last Cycle awakens."
James' blood ran cold. The title, the whispers, the Fragment—all pointed to one truth: he was being hunted. And this time, he wasn't just fighting for survival. He was fighting for mastery over the very System itself.
