The call from security came while Ashley was reading a book at the foyer.
"Mrs. Blackwood? A Ms. Brooke Collins at the gate. Says she's here to see you."
Ashley almost dropped the book. "Brooke? Now?"
"Yes, ma'am. Shall I let her in?"
She didn't think, she smiled before she answered. "Yes. Please. Buzz her through."
She set down the book and hurried to the long walk way. Brooke was in a baseball cap and big sunglasses, gripping a white pastry box like a peace offering.
When she stepped out of her car, Brooke pushed the glasses up. "Hi, trouble."
Ashley pulled her into a hug. "You didn't tell me you were coming."
"Surprise visit. I figured the surprise might beat the spiral." Brooke tipped the box. "Also, almond croissants. I bribed the concierge."
"Get in here," Ashley said, laughing, and led her inside.
Brooke took three steps, looked up, and went still. "Oh."
