Chapter 43 - 002

Merlin stared at Duke.

He didn't say he didn't know his ability. He said he didn't know what it did, which might just mean it was too complicated to explain.

Tony shrugged.

"What's that supposed to mean? Your ability is like an extension of your body, so you should at least know what it is."

"But I know what it is," Duke replied. "I also know what it can do. And although I know it can't do everything, I don't know what it can't do."

"Would you mind demonstrating?" Sera asked.

Duke nodded.

He raised his right hand.

A grey mist seeped from the space between his fingers.

Just looking at it sent chills down Merlin's spine.

As the mist grew, the air around it began to distort.

Merlin's eyes widened.

For some reason, the eerie sight reminded him of the monster that had slaughtered him and the crew.

Duke stretched his hand forward.

The mist drifted toward the wooden sword Nathan had dropped and settled over it.

Duke opened his palm.

The sword lifted from the ground.

It spun through the air before landing in his hand.

As it did, he dispersed the mist.

Merlin exhaled.

The air felt light again.

He hadn't even noticed how heavy it had felt until the mist was gone.

"What else can it do?" Sera asked.

Duke glanced at Sera, then back at the wooden sword in his hand.

He covered it with the mist.

Then he dispersed it.

The sword vanished.

"Where did it go?" Edith gasped.

"I don't know," Duke replied. "Since I awakened, I've just been able to make objects disappear and reappear without knowing where they disappeared to."

"I just get the feeling I can do it, but I don't know how I did it."

Tony furrowed his brows.

"But.."

"I understand," Sera interrupted. "Just like Tony said, it's an extension of your body, which means you know what you can do but don't necessarily know how your body works."

Tony shrugged.

"Yeah, sure."

Sera smiled.

"I'll train your ability personally."

"U-uhh, okay?" Duke stammered.

"Can I come too?!" Edith said, louder than she intended.

"Yeah, sure. Why not?" Sera answered.

"Hey!" Tony interrupted. "What about Merlin?"

What about me?! Merlin said in his head.

Sera glanced at Merlin, then back at Tony.

"Merlin's ability is too risky to test now."

"I know that!" Tony replied. "But why not give the dork a weapon?"

"That's a great idea," Sera said, with a weapon he probably won't have to use his ability all the time.

She turned to look at Merlin.

"What's your preferred weapon?"

"Huh?"

Though the conversation was about him, Merlin got a bit startled when he was suddenly dragged into it.

"Uh... a scythe."

The words slipped out of his mouth.

They all went silent.

Tony glared at him for a while, ha! I always knew you had a screw loose.

Sera looked at Merlin, I'm not joking around.

Merlin blinked, he didn't mean to say it out loud, and didn't intend on using a scythe but now he had something to prove.

Plus he had half mastered it during the simulation, it couldn't be much different here, he thought to himself.

Merlin sighed.

I'm not joking either, he looked Sera in the eyes.

Sera chuckled, a scythe huh, well we don't have one at our disposal but there's probably one in the academies arsenal.

I'll arrange one for you later, if you're actually serious about this.

Tony shrugged before laying back on the wall.

Now that we know what we can do I'll go arrange a mission for us, Sera said,I'll be back.

She shut the door behind her, the hallway was empty and void of any sound. She could hear the echo of her footsteps as she walked down.

After walking a few steps, she stopped.

"Who is he?" a voice came from down the hall.

Sera glanced back.

Mr. Isaac stood in the doorway of an empty class.

"I don't know," she answered.

"Is that implying he's infact a Deadman?"

Sera was silent for a moment.

"I don't know what he is."

"I see," Mr Isaac paused, "you've become a bit more hesitant than usual." He adjusted his glasses. "I wonder what the overseers would think about this." He chuckled lightly.

Sera sighed.

"First of all I'm not hesitant, the situation just isn't the same as before and secondly you can tell them what you like, I'm not really bothered what they think."

A light smirk appeared on her face, you're the one who needs to be worried, she continued walking down the hall.

I know that more than anyone, Mr Isaac replied.

He stood in the doorway, watching her leave.

After making a few turns down the hall she arrived at a small reception unit.

On the side of the room stood a shelf with piles of documents. She went through them then selected one.

Sera walked over to the counter.

"I'll take this one."

She dropped the file on the counter.

The receptionist took it without looking.

"Hold on. I'll go verify this for you."

He walked over to the back room of the office.

The hallway was silent save for the sound of the receptionist organizing files.

Sera stood at the counter, tapping her finger on the surface.

"Are you sure you want this one?" The receptionist asked. "It's.. he raised his head, oh it's you, Lady Sera. My sincerest apologies. Let me fix it for you. What flock?"

"Flock 35."

35 he repeated, that's.. yeah Sera interrupted. He sighed.

"Okay. I just need your signature here. By the way, where have you been all this time? It's been really long since I've seen you."

The receptionist said.

Sera picked up a pen and placed it to the paper.

She paused for a second.

"I guess it has."

She gave a faint smile before signing.
