Chapter 123 - Archaeologists?

Looking at the system panel that had suddenly appeared before him, Ur froze, realizing that this system notification seemed a little different from before.

"Yes!"

Even so, Ur made his decision immediately. He hadn't forgotten his current situation. No matter what, this realistic system wouldn't harm itself, right?

After receiving Ur's confirmation, the system immediately began operating.

[Large amount of absorbable energy detected. Beginning absorption.]

Rustle.

A line of text appeared on the system panel. Ur saw countless light particles emerging from all directions, converging toward him. The moment they touched his body, they vanished.

"These are magic crystals!" Seeing the true form of the glowing specks around him, Ur was astonished.

Magic crystals condensed magical energy. While not exactly rare in this world, they were certainly not something found everywhere.

Yet now, so many magic crystals had appeared here. Ur had every reason to believe this absolutely was not the so-called "treasure," because no mage would ever carry so many magic crystals on them.

Could this be a magic crystal mine? The thought surfaced in Ur's mind.

It wasn't impossible. A mere treasure alone might not be enough to lure a powerful drake to relocate its lair, but if a magic crystal mine were added to the mix, no drake or dragon would be able to resist the temptation.

At present, human mages have very limited research on magic crystal energy, and its applications are far from widespread.

But the ancient dragon race could use large quantities of magic crystals to enhance their own magic power.

In ancient times, any dragon that possessed a magic crystal nest would consider it a mark of supreme glory.

The system absorbed the magic crystals extremely quickly. Every second, large amounts of white light flowed into Ur's body.

Before long, all the magic crystals in the lair were completely absorbed. Once absorption finished, another line of text popped up on the system panel.

[Absorption complete. Energy sufficient. Begin system repair?]

This line made Ur freeze again.

He discovered that his system really didn't follow the usual style. Other systems leveled up, why was his talking about "repair"?

What, so this whole time you were defective?!

"Yes!"

Complaints aside, Ur still made the decision immediately.

[System repair initiated...]

The text on the panel changed again. Seeing this, Ur temporarily ignored it and began examining the drake's lair.

Although the magic crystals were gone, the lair was still brightly lit, thanks to several strange glowing gemstones embedded within. The lair was enormous, but also very empty.

After all, dragons and humans had very different aesthetics. Dragons and drakes liked to pile everything together and had no interest in orderly arrangements.

As Ur wandered through the lair, a flash of golden light suddenly entered his vision, nearly blinding his "poor man's eyes."

"So much… so much treasure!"

Seeing the scattered piles of gold and jewels ahead, Ur nearly started drooling.

It was obvious that the treasure was piled in a much larger heap. A wide space nearby must have originally held the magic crystals.

"System! System, come out and collect the money!" Seeing the treasure, Ur hurriedly called out in his mind.

But after quite a while, there was no response.

Ur quickly looked at the system panel, only to see the words:

[System repair initiated…]

A bad premonition rose in his heart. "Damn it. System, don't tell me you crashed? Don't mess with me! If you're going to crash, can't you wait until later? System? System!"

Ur desperately called out, but the system gave him no response whatsoever. Instantly, Ur's face turned green.

It was obviously impossible for him to take all this treasure. He wouldn't be able to explain it to the others outside. But with the system's help, he could at least skim off tens of millions, maybe even hundreds of millions, worth of treasure!

Sitting atop a mountain of gold yet unable to take it, the injustice of it nearly made Ur cry.

"Everyone be careful. The dragon's lair is just ahead."

"Hehehe… Thank goodness for Shien's cleverness. Spreading news about the 'treasure' brought so many people to hold that evil dragon back for us. Otherwise, how could we have reached the lair so easily? Now all this treasure belongs to us!"

"Angs, remember, we are archaeologists, not treasure hunters. Everything we do is for the sake of history buried in time."

"It's just a pity that little girl had such bad luck. If she were here, translating the text later would've been much easier."

Fragmented voices drifted from behind a nearby wall. Hearing them, Ur paused slightly. But when he caught that last sentence, his eyes instantly turned cold.

Boom!

With a dull crash, a section of wall beside Ur collapsed. Two men and two women stepped out from within.

The moment they emerged, they saw Ur standing ahead and were startled

"Who are you? How did you get here?" one of the men with glasses stepped forward and demanded.

Ur didn't answer. He simply looked at the four of them coldly and asked:

"You're the ones who spread the news about the so-called 'treasure,' aren't you?"

Ur's aura made them uneasy. They vaguely guessed who he might be.

But the bespectacled man quickly regained his composure and shouted coldly. "What do you want? I warn you, we are archaeologists specially appointed by the Kingdom of Fiore."

"Archaeologists? You look more like a bunch of thieves to me." Ur curled his lips in disdain.

"Silence!"

Ur's words seemed to strike a nerve.

A long-haired woman with an arrogant expression stepped forward and angrily declared, "I won't allow you to insult our profession! You must apologize. We are uncoverers of history!"

"Uncoverers of history?" Ur's voice was cold. "Do you know that because of your so-called excavation, hundreds of people have died?"

"Hah. What of it? For the sake of history, what are a few hundred lives?" The long-haired woman curved her lips slightly, her expression indifferent.

Hearing this, Ur's lips also curled upward. His eyes narrowed. "Well said. Then for the sake of history, sacrificing your own lives should be perfectly acceptable too, right?"

Slash!

The moment he finished speaking, Ur appeared before the bespectacled man in an instant and cut him in half with a single strike. Blood sprayed everywhere.

The remaining three were stunned. They never expected this.

The long-haired woman froze in terror. After a long moment, she barely regained her senses. When she saw Ur standing before her with a faint smile on his lips, she screamed.

Her arrogance vanished, replaced by panic and fear. Her entire body trembled uncontrollably.

"Don't come closer! Stay away from me!" She shrieked.

Ur's expression remained cold. "Didn't you say a few hundred lives meant nothing? Why are you afraid now?"

"No, I'm different! I'm someone who uncovers history! How can they compare to me?"

"Really?" Ur replied softly. "I don't see any difference at all." As he spoke, two more slashes flashed. The other two, still paralyzed by fear, died instantly.

The long-haired woman completely collapsed. "Ah, you devil! You're a devil!" She turned and fled frantically.

Ur didn't pursue her. But just as she ran a short distance, a figure suddenly rushed in from ahead.

Seeing that person, the long-haired woman looked as if she had found hope. "Help me! Please save me!"

Elia paused slightly upon seeing the unfamiliar woman. But when his gaze swept over the corpses near Ur, and the tunnel leading straight into the drake's lair, He instantly understood what had happened. His expression turned icy.

Smack!

As the woman approached him, Elia struck her with a single slap, sending her flying into a wall. She died instantly.

Elia didn't look well. His face was pale, his clothes torn, and blood at the corner of his mouth.

Seeing his condition, Ur said nothing more. He walked to Elia's side and spoke a single word.

"Go."

Without another word, Ur rushed out of the drake's lair. Elia glanced once at the interior of the lair, then silently followed.

Just as Ur was sprinting outward, the system's notification suddenly rang in his mind.

Ding!

The text on the system panel gradually changed.

[System repair successful. New function unlocked — Enhancement!]
