You might see me explain that, while extremely rare in history, a story might feature a Crown Princess (a princess designated as the heir apparent). This is different from the more historical Crown Princess (太子妃, Tàizǐfēi), who is the wife of the Crown Prince. I'll point out these differences where they're relevant.
So, while most of the information here is in line with the circumstances that existed in ancient China, I'll also note where fiction often bends the rules to create more compelling drama and power struggles!
