Chapter 3 - The North

It was still dark outside when they had stopped to rest up.

Beatrice gently put the unconscious Manther down on the floor, on his back. He had terrible burns across his entire body.

He had also lost a significant amount of blood and was practically at deaths door.

Beatrice kneeled in front of the heavily injured man and put both of her palms on his chest.

Following her action, golden dust-like particles that had a blueish-white hue mix into them, came out of Beatrice's body.

These tiny particles swayed and floated around her entire body. This all took a second before the temperature around her dropped.

Blue, almost white, crystal-like ice extended from Manther's chest when she placed her palm on his chest.

When the ice started spreading, Manther's unconscious body began trembling and quivering lightly, as if affected by the pain and the cold.

He continued for what lasted about 20 seconds before he stopped moving, his entire body enveloped in ice.

Seeing this, Beatrice stood up and turned to face the old man, her expression calm and her demeanour elegant. She spoke softly as she smiled at him.

"He should be fully healed and awake in half an hour."

When the old man heard this his eyebrows lifted high, revealing an extremely shocked expression. It was the same for Simon and the axe wielder.

"That just can't be possible…Young lady, are you perhaps a divine human?... No that can't be it either."

Hearing their conversation, Jacob turned his head to face Beatrice with a slight smile on his pale white face.

"What's going on? Why are you surprised sir?"

Equally surprised at Jacob's question the old man turned to him and asked with a highly curious tone in his voice. "Is this normal? Bringing someone from the brink of death to a full recovery in minutes?"

Jacob's reply to the old man's question only served to confuse the old man more than he already was. "He almost died? Was it that bad?!"

When he said this, Beatrice bit her lip again, that concerned look once again returning to her face.

The old man just looked at him confusion plastered across his face.

"What do you mean, young one? You saw how grave those injuries were didn't you? He would've been dead by sunrise."

Jacobs eyes widened when he heard that, his expression becoming oddly livelier compared to the dark and quiet looking person he was when they all first met him.

"Really?! That's amazing! You must be a really good doctor! What kind of element allows you to heal people that quickly? I felt the divinity of ice, but that's not meant for healing is it?"

The entire grouped stared at him as he excitedly went on about Beatrice's healing abilities.

Seeing that he was done talking, the old man walked up to Jacob, causing Jacob to pause and look at him.

"What's your name, boy?"

Regaining his calm, Jacob looked at the old man with confusion.

"My name's Jacob."

"Ah, I see. And Jacob, might you perhaps be blind by any chance?"

When Jacob heard this, his face reverted back to the calm and distant gaze with the slight smile on his pale white face.

With a smile he spoke in a calm and soft voice. "Yes, I'm blind."

"I thought so." A smile appeared on Beatrice's face when she said this. Although she showed concern, she had a warm smile on her.

Seeing that, the old man turned to face her. "You weren't certain before?"

"No, we've just met each other on our way to your campsite."

Jacob cut in to the conversation with a curious expression "Then what gave it away? I don't think I gave you reason to assume I was blind."

Immediately after saying this, drake started walking towards the three of them, talking in his usual calm tone while doing so.

"You take awkward steps, and you tap that sword of yours on the ground when you walk."

When Beatrice saw that Drake had stopped with only those two reasons, she added her own.

"Also, your eyes don't seem focused. You're looking at me but it's like you're only looking in my direction."

Jacob lost his smile when he heard this.

The old man smiled when he saw this. "It's quite impressive, young one. How do you see us even though you're blind."

Jacob turned to face Beatrice with a calm and cold expression on his face.

"I'm really sorry about that."

"I used divinity to see. By spreading my divinity thin and letting it flow around the area instead of around me, I can use it as my senses to see what goes on around me."

"So because I have my divinity flowing around each and everyone of you…" He looked directly at Beatrice while saying this.

"I can see the outlines of your bodies. How tall you are, how much muscle you have and even gender sometimes."

"I unfortunately, can't see your faces."

After a silent pause, Beatrice bit her lip again.

"Why are you apologizing? It's not like it's your fault."

So, he really can't see us…

The old man looked around when he noticed everyone had gone silent. Suddenly he erupted in an excited tone!

"It's impressive! You're able to spread out your divinity in such a manner?! It must be extremely exhausting."

"Not at all, I have enormous amounts of divinity inside me."

Hearing his reply, the old man's eyes narrowed. It also caught the attention of the rest of the group, causing them to come closer to listen.

"hmm? What do you mean?

Jacob smiled slightly again when he heard this, while Drake started a bonfire using the wood he received from Simon. Everyone of them of them turning to pay attention to Jacob.

"Let's sit down, I'm a bit tired."

At his request, each and every one of them grabbed a log of wood big enough to sit on and placed it near the bonfire, placing their seats in a circle around the fire.

Beatrice of course, grabbed two logs of wood, placing them next to each other before telling Jacob to have a seat.

Once everyone was seated, Jacob turned his gaze to Drake, then to the old man.

"Have any of you heard of divine law?"

The old man shook his head first, indicating he did not know of this term, then Drake did the same.

Seeing this and everyone else's silence, Jacob continued…

"Divine law, is the principle of equality that applies to everything in the world."

"My master taught me that, just like how all elements are equal in power, no element having the upper hand against another. This same principle applies to everything else in the world."

"He called it God's fairness, as our father."

Everyone sat quietly, attentively listening to the young boy speak.

"I was born blind… but I was also born with ridiculous amounts of divinity inside me."

"Because I was blessed with this much divinity, the curse had to be to an equal level. Those born with no hands, may have incredible talents for strategy. Those with no voice may have talent for scientific activity…"

When he finished speaking, surprisingly, Simon was the first to speak after. He had a condescending tone when he spoke.

"It sounds like your master was just trying to make you feel better, I've never once heard of such principles."

This put an annoyed look on Beatrice's face. She was about to say something, giving a menacing glare at Simon when Jacob spoke again.

"Everyone views the world in their own unique way. I may not have eyes but this is how I view the world…" he smile warmly this time before he continued.

"You can have as many opinions as you like, but that's just from your point of view. How I see things…that comes from mine."

He chuckled briefly. "Of course, I can't see. But you get what I'm saying."

In the silence that followed, Drake looked at Jacob for a while, not saying a single word.

After a long pause he finally spoke. "My name is Drake and I…am an acquaintance of Ms Beatrice."

Beatrice quickly snapped out of the daze she went into after hearing Jacob's words.

"Acquaintance?" when she said this, her right eyebrow raised slightly.

The old man chuckled when he saw this. "Lovers then?" he pondered, with a mischievous look on his face.

"No! Acquaintance is better" Beatrice quickly sprung to defend herself.

The old man laughed loudly when he saw this. "I'm just teasing. This old man's name is Henry."

"I'm Simon." Simon quickly took his turn to introduce himself and went silent once again.

Seeing this, the axe wielding man stood up and followed suit. "My name is Tarth III, I am a warrior from the North."

When Jacob heard this, he lifted his head to look at him. "The North?"

Drake also looked up when he heard this. "You come from the North? A warrior? Then how did you end up here?"

Tarth looked at Drake. "So, you're familiar with our customs?"

"I've been there once. I met a man named Emmanuel Tarth II, he had hair similar to yours. In fact he looked a lot like you."

While Drake spoke, Tarth's eyes lit up in excitement, it looked unnatural on his enormous and muscular build.

Tarth had grey hair, a darker shade of grey. He also had eyes of a similar colour and it was the same for his facial hair, which wasn't a thick beard, but also not a stubble.

"You met my brother?!" for the first time, he had a smile on his face.

"When? How did you go to the North? Who permitted your entry? How is my brother?!"

Seeing how excited he was, Drake shook his head slightly. "This was 8 years ago, I had been traveling with my master back then. I was only 16 years old."

Hearing this, drained him, but the smile on his face remained. "I see, I wonder why he never told me he had met outsiders."

"But how did you enter our region? No outsiders are ever allowed to enter deep enough into the North to meet the central warriors."

"My master is an old friend of your father. The chief."

This time only revealing little surprise, he looked down with a reminiscent expression and a smile on his face.

"You even know that, huh?"

Before they could continue their conversation, they heard a rustle coming from close to where they were sitting causing them all to turn their head except Jacob.

Manther was sitting up on the floor with a dazed look on his face.

"Where am I?"

When Drake saw this, he stood up and sighed. "We can start moving again, then."

Hearing what Drake said caused Jacob to look down and smile slightly. His tone still as calm as ever and his expression still equally as calm.

Jacob shook his head lightly, causing Drake to smile when he noticed this.

"It's too late, 300 meters away, approaching fast."
