Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 — The Half-Elf Child

A thousand years had passed since the Sunlight Knight, Alexander, gave his life to seal away the Dark Elf King. The world had not forgotten him, though his legend was told differently by elves and humans. To some, he was a saint; to others, only a myth. But in a small village hidden between forest and farmland, his name lived quietly on.

That village was called Elderleaf, named for the ancient white-blooming trees that shaded its paths. Elderleaf was neither fully human nor fully elven it stood at the border, a place where the two races learned to coexist, far away from the greater kingdoms. Merchants came and went, healers traded herbs, children ran barefoot under the blossoms, and the air smelled always of bread baking and river water flowing. Life was simple, unchanging, and to many, perfect.

It was here that Eryndor, a stoic elf swordsman, and Hana, a human healer with kind eyes, chose to make their home. They were not rich, nor powerful, but they were respected Eryndor for his quiet discipline, Hana for her generosity.

Their first child was a boy: Kael. Born with silver-tinged hair and striking emerald eyes, Kael carried the pride of his elven blood. Even as a child, he moved with grace. By the time he could walk, he held sticks like swords, practicing swings until his small arms grew sore. Villagers would nod and say, "That boy will be a warrior."

Years later, under the sacred elder tree, Hana, gave birth again. This time, the child's hair was darker, leaning closer to her human side, though his eyes shone the same green as Kael's. Unlike his elder brother, he was softer, smaller, and often quiet when others cried.

They named him Alex, in quiet honor of the legendary Alexander. The name was Hana's choice, though Elric agreed after a long silence. "A name like that carries weight," he'd said. "Let us see if he can bear it."

The family grew again when a daughter was born Lyra, with hair as pale as moonlight and eyes warm as sunlit earth. If Kael was discipline and Alex uncertainty, Lyra was joy. She laughed easily, cried rarely, and brought warmth wherever she toddled.

The years turned like the seasons. Elderleaf remained peaceful, its market bustling with farmers and hunters, its nights alive with festivals beneath glowing lanterns. And in this place, Alex grew slowly, clumsily, yet steadily.

Kael was always ahead. He trained with Eryndor every morning, his wooden sword flashing with crisp strikes. By the time he was eight, he could already spar with young elf warriors twice his age. His discipline drew admiration from the elders, and even the blacksmith muttered, "He'll wield steel before most boys his age."

Alex, in comparison, stumbled often. His grip on the practice sword was too tight, his feet tripped over roots, and his wrists ached after just a few swings. Whenever Kael struck a dummy with a clean thwack, Alex would fumble, nearly dropping his weapon.

"Don't hold it like you're strangling it," Kael would say, his voice stern yet patient. He'd adjust Alex's hands, guiding him through the motions. "The sword isn't your enemy. Breathe with it. Let it flow."

Alex would nod, sweat dripping down his face, determined to try again. He admired his brother deeply even envied him. To Alex, Kael was everything he wasn't: strong, graceful, admired. Yet, Kael never mocked him. If anything, Kael stood like a shield between him and the whispers of villagers who muttered, "That boy will never be as strong as his brother."

And when Kael's guidance wasn't enough, Lyra's encouragement filled the gaps. She would clap her tiny hands when Alex managed even one proper strike, her brown eyes sparkling.

"You'll be great one day, Alex!" she'd cheer. "I know it!"

Her faith was unshakable, and though Alex often doubted himself, her words always warmed him.

Life in Elderleaf wasn't only training. Days were spent helping Hana gather herbs in the forest, chasing Lyra through wildflower fields, or sitting by the river as Kael fished with practiced patience. Hana's gentle voice told them stories of human heroes, while Eryndor shared the old songs of elves.

Alex first mission training day.

When Alex turn 7 his first mission was to train with Kael again.

[Training Mission Unlocked!]

Objective: Perform 20 Sword Swings (0/20) Reward: +1 Strength, +1 Endurance Bonus: Unlock "Basic Swordsmanship (Lv.1)"

Alex's eyes widened. The System… it's here again.

He swung, clumsy but determined.

[Progress: 1/20]

Kael raised a brow. "Better. Don't stop."

Again.

[Progress: 2/20]

By the time the sun dipped, Alex's arms shook violently, sweat soaking his shirt. Kael clapped him on the back.

"You lasted longer than I thought. Not bad, little brother."

Another ding.

[Mission Complete!]

+1 Strength +1 Endurance New Skill: Basic Swordsmanship (Lv.1) Hidden Quest: Brother's Bond Completed → Reward: +2 Willpower Title Gained: Stubborn Cub

Alex collapsed in the grass, grinning through exhaustion. "I did it…"

Life in Elderleaf moved in peaceful cycles, but for Alex, every chore, every game, every trial became an unseen mission.

When he carried buckets of water from the stream:

[Endurance Training]

+1 Endurance (carrying weight) Progress: Stamina Bar slightly expanded.

When he helped Hana crush herbs and apply bandages to injured hunters:

[Support Mission: Aid the Healer]

Reward: +1 Intelligence New Skill: Herbal Knowledge (Lv.1)

When he played hide-and-seek with Lyra, chasing her through the woods until his lungs burned:

[Agility Training]

+1 Agility Hidden Quest: Protect Your Sister (Unlocked).

Sometimes the System whispered in faint blue text at the edge of his vision:

[Level Progress: 76/100 EXP]

Each point felt like proof proof that he wasn't weak, that he wasn't the "half-blood mistake" some villagers muttered about.

At night, Eryndor's deep voice carried through the cottage. He spoke of the old wars, of Alexander's sacrifice, of the unity elves and humans once shared. Alex listened wide-eyed, clutching Lyra's hand.

One night, as Eryndor described Alexander's final battle, the System chimed again:

[Hidden Quest Unlocked!]

Title: Inheritor of Legends (Locked) Condition: Grow strong enough to awaken the Sunlight Legacy.

Alex's small hands clenched into fists. I'll do it. I'll make Father proud. I'll make them all proud.

On his seventh birthday, Kael led Alex to the training yard again. "Ready?"

Alex nodded fiercely. This time, his swings were sharper. His stance, steadier. Kael's smirk slowly turned into approval.

A sudden chime rang louder than ever before:

[Congratulations! You have Leveled Up.]

Level: 1 → 2 HP: 50 → 70 MP: 20 → 30 Strength: 4 → 6 Endurance: 3 → 5 Agility: 4 → 5 Intelligence: 5 → 6 Willpower: 6 → 8

[New Passive Unlocked: Determination]

Effect: Minor boost to endurance recovery when refusing to give up.

Alex nearly dropped the wooden sword in shock. I leveled up! I actually leveled up!

Kael only saw his little brother's grin. "What's so funny?"

Alex shook his head, hiding the glowing window from his brother's eyes. "Nothing… I just feel stronger."

That night, as the family shared stew around the fire, Alex glanced at his parents, at Lyra, at Kael. For the first time, he felt that he wasn't just drifting through life.

The System wasn't just a game it was his path.

And though he was only a boy in a small village, Alex swore to himself:

Step by step, mission by mission… I will rise.
