Chapter 97 - Chapter 97:[The Festival OF Masks ARC] The Weight of Understanding

Chapter 97 (Part 08)

The festival grounds were still alive with noise, but Alok had left them behind.

He walked past the last row of tents, past the flickering lights and distant laughter, until the sounds faded into a low hum. The path led him through a narrow gap in the trees, then down a gentle slope, until the grass gave way to sand.

The beach was empty.

The sea stretched endlessly into the darkness, its surface shimmering with the reflected light of a thousand stars. The waves moved slowly, rhythmically, as if the ocean itself was breathing. The sky above was painted in shades of deep purple and orange, the last light of the sun bleeding into the horizon.

Alok sat down on a large rock near the water's edge. The stone was cold and rough beneath his hands. He did not mind.

He watched the waves for a long time without really seeing them.

His mind was elsewhere.

He thought about Erik Coldsteel.

The way he had fought not for victory, but for something else. Something buried deep beneath layers of ice and discipline. Something that had been broken long before the tournament began.

Erik had been looking for something. Not a trophy. Not glory. Something he had lost. Someone he had lost.

His father.

Alok remembered the way Erik had spoken about him. The way his voice had faltered when he mentioned the border of the immortal realm. The way his hands had clenched at his sides.

He's carrying a burden, Alok thought. A weight that will never leave him. He fights to forget. He fights to remember. He fights because he doesn't know what else to do.

He thought about his own father. Aldren Fanando. The man who had disappeared. The man who had left behind only a pendant and a half-finished letter. The man who had been erased from the world like he had never existed.

We are both searching for something we lost.

The difference is, I don't even know what I'm searching for.

He thought about Sera Dawnfield.

The fear in her eyes. The way her hands trembled when she spoke about her brother. The way her smile never reached her eyes.

She was trapped. Not by chains. By love. By fear of losing someone she couldn't protect.

Her brother was sick. He needed expensive treatment. Tira had offered to pay for it if Sera did what she asked. And what she asked was simple: watch Alok. Report his movements. Tell her if he spoke to anyone.

Sera had agreed. She had no choice.

But she hated herself for it. Alok could see it in the way she avoided his gaze. The way she flinched when he spoke to her. The way her voice cracked when she said his name.

She's not a bad person, Alok thought. She's a desperate person. And desperate people do terrible things to survive.

He thought about Ravel. The boy who had once been his enemy. The boy who had betrayed him. The boy who was now trying to earn back his trust.

Ravel was broken. He had been broken long before Alok defeated him in the school tournament.

Broken by his brother's shadow. Broken by his own pride. Broken by the realization that he was not as strong as he had believed.

And now, he was trying to rebuild himself. One step at a time. One apology at a time.

He's trying, Alok thought. That's more than most people do.

He thought about Tira.

The mask she wore. The jealousy that festered behind her smile. The hatred that burned in her eyes when she looked at Ceya.

She hated Ceya. Not because Ceya had done anything wrong. Because Ceya had something she wanted. Attention. Admiration. Love.

Ceya was beautiful. Ceya was kind. Ceya was loved by everyone who met her.

And Tira was invisible.

Jealousy is a poison, Alok thought. It destroys the person who feels it as much as the person it's aimed at. Tira doesn't realize that. She thinks she's hurting Ceya. But she's only hurting herself.

He thought about Ceya.

Her face in the crowd. The way she had written the word in the dirt. The desperation he had seen in her eyes, even through the mask Lisa had forced upon her.

HELP.

She was still fighting. Even when she wasn't in control. Even when she was trapped inside her own body. Even when every instinct screamed at her to give up.

She was still fighting.

Why?

The answer came to him softly, like a whisper from the sea.

Because she believes in you.

He thought about Vaelia.

He had never met her face to face, but he could feel her presence like a shadow at the edge of his vision. She was the one pulling the strings. The one who had sent Tira. The one who had threatened Sera. The one who was trying to destroy everything he had built.

What made her like this?

He didn't know. But he understood one thing: She is afraid.

Afraid of losing power. Afraid of being forgotten. Afraid of becoming irrelevant in a world that had already moved on. Afraid that Ceya the true heir would take everything she had stolen.

Fear makes people do terrible things.

He thought about Rihan.

His loyal friend. His anchor. The one who had stood beside him through the labyrinth, through the warehouse, through the darkness.

Rihan carried his own weight. His father had disappeared when he was young. Left behind only questions and a half-finished letter. Rihan had spent years wondering why. Wondering if he had done something wrong.

And still, he stayed.

He stayed when Alok was cold. He always when Alok was distant. He stayed when Alok pushed him away.

He stays because he believes in me, Alok thought. He stays because he thinks I'm worth saving.

I hope he's right.

He thought about Lisa.

The goddess who had taken Ceya. The goddess who was using her body as a vessel. The goddess who had her own reasons, her own fears, her own pain.

Lisa was not evil. She was desperate. She had seen her sister Freya rise to power. She had seen the corruption of the immortal realm.

She had come to the mortal world searching for something a weapon, a tool, a person who could break the cycle of divine tyranny.

She had found Alok.

She thinks I'm the one, Alok thought. The Ruler Breaker. The one who can destroy the old order.

What if she's wrong?

He touched the pendant beneath his shirt. It was warm, pulsing gently.

What am I becoming?

The waves continued to roll in, slow and endless.

Alok did not have an answer.

But he knew one thing for certain:

The conflicts between people are not just about the present. They are echoes of the past, colliding with the uncertainty of the future.

Erik fights his father's ghost. Sera fights to save her brother. Tira fights against her own insecurities. Vaelia fights to hold onto stolen power. Lisa fights against her sister's tyranny. Ceya fights to reclaim herself.

And I fight... for all of them.

He stood up, brushed the sand from his clothes, and turned back toward the festival grounds.

The night was still young.

And the game was far from over.
