Chapter 95 - Chapter 95:[The Festival OF Masks ARC] The Dirt in The Dust

Chapter 95 (Part 07)

The fourth morning arrived with a chill that had not been there before.

Alok woke before dawn, his body aching from the previous day's matches. He sat on the edge of his cot, his hands resting on his knees, his eyes fixed on the pale light creeping through the tent flaps.

Three matches down, he thought. Three more to go before the finals.

He touched the pendant beneath his shirt. It was warm, pulsing gently not a warning, but a reminder.

Stay sharp. Stay focused.

He dressed in silence and stepped out into the cold morning air.

POV SHIFT Rihan

Rihan was already awake.

He stood at the edge of the camp, his arms crossed, his breath forming clouds in the cold air. He had not slept well. He had been thinking about Alok.

He's changing, Rihan thought. He's colder now. More distant. Like he's building walls around himself.

Rihan understood. He had built walls too, after his father left.

His father had been a soldier. A good one. He had taught Rihan how to fight, how to survive, how to protect the people he cared about. And then one day, he had simply disappeared. No goodbye. No explanation. Just an empty room and a half-finished letter.

Rihan had never told Alok about that. He had never told anyone.

But sometimes, when he looked at Alok, he saw the same emptiness in his eyes. The same weight.

I won't let you disappear, Rihan thought. Not like him.

He heard footsteps behind him.

Alok emerged from the tent, his face calm, his eyes scanning the grounds.

"You're up early," Alok said.

Rihan shrugged. "Couldn't sleep."

Alok nodded, as if he understood. Maybe he did.

"Ravel came to me last night," Alok said quietly. "He said Tira mentioned Erik Coldsteel."

Rihan turned to face him. "What did she say?"

"She said I won't survive the match."

Rihan's jaw tightened. "She's trying to scare you."

"Maybe." Alok's eyes were distant. "Or maybe she's trying to prepare me."

Rihan studied him for a moment. Then he said, "You're not going to back down, are you?"

Alok shook his head. "I can't. If I back down, Vaelia wins. And Ceya..."

He did not finish the sentence.

Rihan placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Then we fight together. Whatever happens, I've got your back."

Alok looked at him. For a moment, the walls seemed to lower.

"Thank you," he said quietly.

POV SHIFT Sera Dawnfield (Valdris)

Sera sat alone in her tent, her knees pulled to her chest.

The morning light filtered through the canvas, casting pale shadows across her face. She had not slept. She had been too afraid.

Tira, she thought. She's going to destroy everything.

Tira had the power to destroy Sera's family. Her younger brother, Leo, was sick.

He needed expensive treatment. Tira had offered to pay for it if Sera did what she asked.

And what she asked was simple: watch Alok. Report his movements. Tell her if he spoke to anyone.

Sera had agreed. She had no choice.

But now, she was not so sure.

She had seen the look in Alok's eyes when he spoke to her. He had not been angry. He had not been accusatory. He had simply offered help.

"If you need help, you can talk to me."

Sera pressed her palms against her eyes.

What have I done?

She thought about Leo. His pale face. His weak smile. The way he still tried to be brave, even when he could barely stand.

I'm doing this for him, she told herself. I have no choice.

But the words felt hollow.

POV SHIFT Alok

The day's matches began with a sense of anticipation.

Alok watched from the bleachers as Erik Coldsteel stepped into the arena. His opponent was a tall fighter from Zandor, quick and aggressive.

Erik dismantled him in under a minute.

Alok watched closely, cataloging every movement.

He uses his left hand more than his right, Alok noted. His right foot is slightly slower on the pivot. He favors a counter attack strategy.

He filed the observations away.

Erik is strong. But he has weaknesses. Everyone does.

The afternoon brought a new match Sera Dawnfield, the volleyball champion from Valdris, was playing in the quarterfinals.

Alok had not planned to watch. But he found himself walking toward the volleyball court, drawn by a strange curiosity.

Sera moved like water, fluid and graceful. Her spikes were devastating, her blocks impenetrable. The crowd cheered her name.

But Alok saw something else.

Her hands were trembling.

She's afraid, Alok thought. But not of losing. Of something else.

After the match, he approached her.

She was sitting alone on the bench, her head bowed, a towel draped over her shoulders.

"You played well," Alok said.

She looked up, startled. "Oh... Alok. Thank you."

She smiled, but the smile did not reach her eyes.

Alok sat down beside her, keeping his distance.

"Tira," he said quietly.

Sera froze.

"I know she's got something on you," Alok continued, his voice calm, unhurried. "I don't know what it is. But I know you don't want to be part of this."

Sera's hands trembled.

I'm right, Alok thought. She's trapped.

"If you need help," Alok said softly, "you can talk to me."

Sera stared at him for a long moment. Then she shook her head.

"I can't," she whispered. "She'll hurt my brother."

Her brother, Alok thought. That's the key.

He nodded slowly. "I understand. But if you ever change your mind..."

He stood and walked away.

He did not look back. But he felt Sera's gaze on him, heavy with desperation.

POV SHIFT Alok (The Dirt Scene)

The sun was beginning to set when Alok saw her again.

Ceya.

She was walking alone near the edge of the festival grounds, her silver uniform glowing in the fading light. She moved slowly, her steps measured, her eyes fixed on the ground.

Alok watched her from a distance.

She's still there, he thought. She's still fighting.

And then, something unexpected happened.

Ceya stopped walking.

She bent down, as if to tie her shoe. And in that brief moment, she wrote something in the dirt with her finger.

Alok's eyes narrowed. He strained to see.

The letters were small, barely visible in the fading light.

HELP.

His chest tightened.

She's reaching out. She's still in there.

He took a step forward.

But before he could move, Ceya straightened up and walked away, her steps unhurried, her expression serene.

Lisa's control had returned.

Alok stood frozen, his heart pounding.

I will save you, Ceya. I swear it.

POV SHIFT Ravel

Ravel had seen it too.

He had been standing near the food stalls, pretending to drink water, when he saw Ceya bend down. He saw her write something in the dirt.

He saw Alok's reaction.

She's asking for help, Ravel thought. And Alok will do anything to save her.

He felt a knot tighten in his chest.

He had been on the wrong side once. He had helped Tira. He had hurt Alok. He had almost destroyed everything.

But now, he was on the right side. And he would do whatever it took to stay there.

He walked toward Alok, his steps slow, deliberate.

"Alok," he said quietly.

Alok turned, his eyes still distant.

"I saw it," Ravel said. "Ceya. The dirt. I saw it."

Alok said nothing.

"I'll help you save her," Ravel continued. "Whatever it takes. I owe you that much."

Alok studied him for a long moment. Then he nodded.

"Tomorrow," Alok said quietly. "After the match. We'll make our move."

Ravel nodded. "I'll be ready."

POV SHIFT – Lady Vaelia Laison

In the shadows of the KUA tent, Vaelia watched Alok through the gap in the canvas.

She had seen him watching Ceya. She had seen his reaction.

He cares about her deeply, she thought. That is his weakness.

She turned to Tira, who stood behind her, pale and silent.

"Prepare the final phase," Vaelia said quietly. "When Alok faces Erik, he will be broken. And when he is broken, we will take everything from him."

Tira nodded. "Yes, Madam."

Vaelia smiled.

Dance a little longer, Alok Fanando. The curtain is about to fall.

POV SHIFT Rihan (Final Scene)

That night, Rihan stood alone outside Alok's tent.

The stars were scattered across the sky, cold and distant. He thought about his father again. The empty room. The half-finished letter.

He had spent years wondering why his father had left. Wondering if he had done something wrong.

But now, he understood.

Sometimes people leave because they have no choice. Sometimes they leave to protect the ones they love.

He looked at Alok's tent. He could see Alok's silhouette moving inside, preparing for tomorrow's match.

I won't leave you, Rihan thought. No matter what happens. I won't disappear.

He turned and walked into the night, his footsteps silent, his resolve firm.
