Bran was once confused about the whole thing, but at the same time, he knew that this system was up to some good.
The Daily Intelligence, as he could comprehend, would give him information about certain occurrences every day, which explained everything.
However, Bran still needed more enlightenment on it.
"What is this about?" he asked.
[The Daily Intelligence is a starter gift for you, host. A special feature in the system. It will help you know what to prepare for every day, and some of this info will come with missions.]
[Note that the system will never teach you how to accomplish any of these missions.]
Bran nodded. "I expected as much. No one can help you in this cruel world. I've known that for a long time."
The feminine robotic voice was silent for a while, then continued with another topic.
[Would you like to check your stats, host?]
Bran glanced around and nodded. "Sure."
[Stats:
"What is this?" Bran asked, his tone holding a clear sense of confusion.
[You will need these to become a Policeman. Not just a Policeman, but a Policeman able to put the world under his arms.]
Talking about being a Policeman, Bran knew that only those who had a Gift were able to become one. This was already sounding like a total joke to him, but...
[The Ultimate Justice System is your Gift. With me, you can achieve your dream of becoming a Policeman, but you have to be ready for more than that.]
Bran flinched and furrowed his brows. "What do you mean?"
[You'll see.]
The system denied him a response to that, but he wasn't mad. Bran certainly understood that he didn't have to ask about everything—he knew he would get to see it with his own eyes.
At this point, his focus rested on the mission he just got, which he knew would be his starting force to prove that he had a Gift.
[Mission: Capture the Lawbreaker, Ice Blade, and submit him to the nearest Police Unit.]
[Mission Difficulty: D+.]
[Reward: Four God-tier Skills!]
[Penalty for failure: System Deactivation.]
"Well, you didn't tell me this in the first place," Bran glared at the interface.
[Now you know.]
Bran nodded angrily. This wasn't about whether he liked it or not... It was about how he would get this task done—because he had to.
This could be his only chance to finally grasp that dream and transform his life, and he couldn't afford to lose it.
Not after experiencing the fate of the Giftless as an orphan.
Now the question was... where would he find Ice Blade in an hour? The system already stated that he would come across him in an hour but never left any details on where.
Bran just had to believe that he would run into Ice Blade somehow.
He didn't go back to the scrapyard at that point, as he began to wander around the streets, looking for a possible way to find Ice Blade.
He knew that he would come across Ice Blade anyway as stated by the system, but it was better he stayed in the right place and got ready, because he knew he wouldn't stand a chance against him...
He wasn't strong enough to fight Ice Blade head-on. The man had already frozen two Constable Rank Policemen in broad daylight before slipping into the shadows. A frontal clash would only end with Bran's body scattered across the alley.
That's why he set the trap.
The rope loop lay hidden under a thin layer of dust, stretched across the narrow path Ice Blade always used to cross toward the abandoned market. Bran had studied his movements many times in the streets, noting how the Lawbreaker always took the same shortcut, arrogant in his speed and strength.
Now, all Bran had to do was wait.
Waiting seemed like forever, as Bran didn't even know if it had been one hour yet or not. He just waited and watched, hiding behind a fence in the lonesome, dirty street.
Soon, a cold mist rolled into the alley before a man's shadow cut through it. Ice Blade's presence was sharp, almost biting at Bran's skin. His long coat swayed, and the frost at his fingertips glimmered like knives.
"Another dead city. Nothing but rats," Ice Blade muttered as he strolled forward.
Bran held his breath, watching every step echo against the cracked stone until...
Snap!
The rope tore tight. Ice Blade's foot caught, dragging him upward in an instant. His body flipped into the air, hanging upside down from the old wooden beam Bran had reinforced.
"What the...?!" Ice Blade roared, shards of ice bursting from his hands in fury. He slashed wildly, but the beam groaned, refusing to break. Bran had layered it with steel scraps scavenged from an old gate.
There were a lot of things he didn't understand about this world. But setting traps wasn't one of them.
Bran stepped out from the shadows, his heart hammering as he glared at the man who had stabbed him in the back.
"Not so sharp when you're dangling, huh?"
Ice Blade snarled, freezing the rope, but Bran had expected that.
He quickly grabbed a stone at the side and hit Ice Blade hard at the back of his head.
With a second hit, Ice Blade couldn't help passing out, as Bran let out a wry smile.
"Sorry, Lawbreaker. You are under arrest."
He tied Ice Blade's hands and seized the ice dagger, as well as taking away every other weapon he held.
And now, to finalize the mission, he had to deliver him to the nearest Police Unit.
"Where... Where... Where..." Bran tried figuring out where the nearest Police Unit was located, until he finally did.
"Pod Ave, west side of the town," he muttered to himself.
...
By the time Ice Blade woke up, he saw himself strapped and tied, both legs and arms to a pillar.
"You're awake? Good thing! I was going to wake you up myself... That would have been better, you know... with a punch," Bran smiled.
"You have no idea what you are getting yourself into. I'm going to kill you," Ice Blade said.
"You almost did. Remember? You stabbed me," Bran responded.
"I should have slit your throat instead," Ice Blade cut in.
"Too bad for you then... I'm still alive, and you'll love to see where I'm taking you right now."
"The Police Unit?" Ice Blade laughed. "I've been there more times than I can count. I always got away."
"Well, that's not my business..."
'I just have to get this mission done,' he thought.
Bran cut the ropes holding his legs and dragged Ice Blade forward, pointing a knife behind him.
"You better not try anything stupid, or I won't hesitate to slit your throat."
However, the moment Ice Blade's legs were set free, he quickly tried moving away. Bran knew he couldn't kill him, since he needed him alive to complete the mission.
He only had to do one thing—hit him again with the same stone at the back of his head.
"Ughh, I warned you."
Bran opened Ice Blade's mask, revealing a young boy like him, maybe slightly older. The voice had told everything from the beginning.
Bran judged that it was one of those guys who awakened a Gift but didn't want to work for the cause of the people, instead turning against them.
He then had to carry Ice Blade to Pod Ave Police Unit with a broken, weak cart, passing through weird and surprised looks from crowds until he made his way to his destination.
Reaching the entrance of the Unit building, a Policeman walked out with a crimson red ball of light stretched through his hands against him.
"Does this look like a hospital, boy?" the Policeman asked.
"No, I'm not stupid. I brought a Lawbreaker for arrest," Bran replied.
The Policeman flinched, observing the skinny boy as he wondered how he caught a Lawbreaker.
"Are you shitting with me? You both know setting a trap against a Policeman is a bad idea," the Policeman questioned.
"I've got no time for setting people up, sir. You have to come get this guy before he wakes up. I'm outta here."
Bran said as he attempted to turn, until the Policeman called.
"Hey, how did you do it?" he asked.
Bran shrugged casually. "It was easy, I guess..."
With that, he turned and walked away, as the Policeman approached Ice Blade and handcuffed him at once.
With a few steps forward, the robotic sound rang in.
