Chapter 189 - INCONCEIVABLE

The cosmic sea of stars was in constant motion, the galaxy spun, and war—determined by sentient intellect—was ever-shifting.

In the opening stages of the conflict, the Human Imperium had chosen to strike proactively, seizing an absolute advantage and securing several vital strategic choke points. The two Extermination Fleets pushed deep behind enemy lines, achieving magnificent tactical successes.

However, once the Rangdan rallied, the human fleets found themselves targeted by endless counter-offensives, and their initial advantage began to slowly slip away.

Nevertheless, the strategic objectives of the Extermination Fleets had already been achieved.

Blazkowicz and Lion El'Jonson—the Last Son and the Firstborn—were causing widespread devastation in the enemy's rear, buying invaluable time for the Human Imperium. The Rangdan Empire had long harbored a conspiracy, and the Imperium could not afford to fight a hasty, unprepared war.

At the absolute vanguard of the front lines, the Imperium committed its full might, with the Adeptus Mechanicus joining the fray to construct an advancing defensive line. A vast number of mobile star-fortresses were deployed to the front, embedded into the void like iron spikes, pinning down the human defensive perimeter with absolute finality.

They acted as nodes of a galactic Great Wall, but beyond mere defense, their primary purpose was to provide a staging fulcrum for the Imperial military to project force deep into Rangdan territory—granting the capacity to advance to attack or withdraw to defend.

The Human Imperium was stabilizing from its initial panic, methodically deploying its counter-offensive. The War Council and the Primarchs had reached a rare, absolute consensus: the flames of war must never spread into Imperial territory.

With the Emperor himself personally presiding and the Primarchs serving as warlords, the Imperial forces advanced deliberately into Rangdan territory, purging every trace of the xenos empire.

A war of extermination!

Authorized by the Emperor himself, this campaign was not fought for territory. It employed thunderous, merciless methods to completely erase the Rangdan xenos and their infection.

The Magos Biologis of the Mechanicus had re-confirmed that humans infected by Rangdan brain-fluid were entirely beyond salvation. Once encroached upon by the brain-fluid, the human genome suffered irreversible contamination; after a few generations, a natural, genetic obedience to the Rangdan would manifest.

Kill!

To preserve the genetic purity of mankind!

Every day, hundreds of millions of directives were issued from the Third Theater Headquarters, broadcasting to every military node across the front.

Ferrus Manus, the Primarch of the Iron Hands Legion, stepped down from his command throne and lay within a life-support sarcophagus, transforming himself into an ultra-efficient biological intellect nexus.

The War Archon of the Rangdan Campaign.

The Emperor had bestowed this vital responsibility upon him, using that authority to fill the void left by the title of Warmaster.

Having concluded the ritual of conceptual severance, the Master of Mankind steered his Blackstone Fortress to physically overlap with Ferrus's command headquarters, further amplifying their psychic communication capabilities. The command matrix of the Imperial military took shape, operating across Terra, the central command, and the front lines with an unprecedented, supreme efficiency.

Within the Warp, beside the light of the Astronomican, the Blackstone Fortress elevated the Emperor's psychic might into a second beacon, projecting its radiance across the immaterium.

Within the freezing fractures of the void, fleets flowed in a ceaseless, bustling tide.

Suddenly, a defensive platform on patrol status turned rapidly, locking onto a localized spatial fluctuation. A small group of vessels, radiating intense psychic energy, materialized abruptly from the waves of the Warp without any prior clearance or authorization.

The material universe was torn open, and a micro-fleet emerged into realspace, swathed in a blanket of bloody warp-light.

The escort fleet had navigated the fractures of the immaterium, breaking through the storms to arrive battered but victorious at their destination. The starships were grievously damaged, bearing scars left by the Rangdan hunter-killer packs, as well as the scorched marks of lightning strikes and the corrosion of supernatural acid rains endured during their Warp transit.

[INBOUND CODE: DOOM MARINE]

[IDENTIFICATION AUTHORIZATION: OBELISK]

[MISSION OVERVIEW: ESCORTING RANGDAN OVERLORD CAPTIVE]

Before the defensive platforms could engage, the automated systems of the vessels transmitted the authorization codes, putting a timely halt to the automated firing sequences.

[AUTHORIZATION CONFIRMED: VALIDATION SUCCESSFUL]

[WELCOME BACK, DOOM MARINES]

As the psychic fluctuations dissipated, harbor barges immediately swarmed forward, guiding the fleet directly into the inner port of the Blackstone Fortress.

The news that the King of Warriors had captured a high-ranking member of the Rangdan leadership had already been widely circulated across the Imperium. The fleet's return from enemy territory was a journey carrying ultimate glory.

Upon the platforms of the Blackstone Fortress's inner docks, countless individuals had long been waiting, looking out with bated breath, eager to glimpse the true visage of the Imperium's great enemy.

The Doom Marines marched out in formation, their black power armor covered in battle scars—yet these marks did not convey defeat, but rather supreme honor. They had evaded capture and carried a hostile supreme commander, carving a bloody path out of enemy space to return to the embrace of the Imperium.

As they marched down from the starships, the gathered crowds knelt to pay homage to the Legio warriors, expressing their highest reverence.

As an anti-gravity platform glided out from the vessel, the people rose from the black stone floor, their eyes filled with utter disdain and loathing as they stared at the foul creature contained within the runic stasis-cage.

Despite the suppression of the runes, the Rangdan Overlord still exuded boundless malice, hatred churning within its crimson eyes.

The Defiant Overlord could never have anticipated that it would become an object of public display for humans, viewed like a low-grade beast. Within the Rangdan Empire, humans could be slaughtered, traded, and abused at whim, holding a status lower than livestock. A single directive from this Overlord could cause trillions of humans to vanish from the face of the galaxy!

Now, it was inside the cage while the humans stood outside. The roles had been completely inverted—how could a high and mighty Overlord accept such a reality?

"Miserable—"

The Defiant Overlord could not endure it. Just as it opened its maw to humiliate the mortals, the runic cage erupted with violent arcs of lightning, scourging its flesh.

"ROAR! ROAR! ROAR!"

"—humans!" Silver serpents of electricity coiled around its massive cranium, causing it to convulse and twitch, yet it endured the agony to spit its curses.

"Stand down!" Obelisk growled low, signaling the Legion warriors to disperse the crowd.

The lightning was continuously vaporizing the Rangdan brain-fluid. Anyone who inhaled the vapor could establish a mental connection with the Overlord, falling under the alien ruler's domination. The Iron Hands battle-brothers immediately moved to push back the crowds, preventing any chaos and ensuring the Rangdan captive had no opening to exploit.

Legionaries brought forward a heavy black shroud, draping it over the cage to prevent any unforeseen incidents during transit.

The massive procession moved swiftly toward the central command hall to present the asset to the Emperor and the Primarchs. A Rangdan Overlord possessed supreme strategic value; only the Master of Mankind could pass final judgment upon it.

The great gates of the Blackstone Fortress ground open, revealing the interior of the massive black pyramid. It had lost its former tranquility and emptiness, replaced by a scene of immense, frantic activity. Legio warriors stood in the shadows, securing the command hall, nodding in silent greeting to their brother Legionaries.

Numerous strategic planning rooms had been erected around the holographic light-sandbox, with representatives from the Adeptus Mechanicus and the mortal armies entering and exiting constantly, relaying commands to their respective forces.

A great stasis-sarcophagus stood upon a black stone plinth. Behind the reinforced view-port, Ferrus Manus lay in a deep, analytical slumber.

Upon the Supreme Blackstone Throne sat the Emperor, a golden sun illuminating the massive command hall.

The escorting warriors advanced with urgent strides. Along their path, mortal officers knelt, and representatives from various Legions offered the martial salutes of their respective brotherhoods to the Doom Marines , expressing profound respect.

Clack!

The warriors' synchronized footsteps halted precisely before the Custodian guard detachment. Obelisk took a step forward, his black combat boots treading upon the gold-embroidered crimson carpet. Bowing to the golden sun upon the high dais, he threw back his chest and spoke clearly: "Hail to the Master of Mankind!"

"The Doom Slayer Legion, Retainer to the Primarch—Obelisk, accompanied by the Fifth Company, has returned with a high-value captive."

"The mission is fully accomplished!"

With those words, a Doom Warrior stepped over to the anti-gravity platform and pulled away the black shroud, delivering the mission objective.

Several Custodian Guards stepped forward, using analytical scanners to verify the true identity of the Rangdan captive.

"Identity verified," the Custodian reported quickly, nodding his head. "Though heavily suppressed and constrained, showing marked differences from a Rangdan Sovereign, it is confirmed to be a Rangdan Overlord."

"We accept custody." He brought his right hand to his chest, offering Obelisk a warrior's salute. "Doom Marine , your duty is fulfilled."

"It is our duty," Obelisk returned the salute, stepping off the crimson carpet and leading his battle-brothers to stand aside.

Inside the runic cage, a cataclysmic shockwave erupted within the mind of the Defiant Overlord, leaving it utterly stunned for a long moment!

It could find no words to describe what it was currently witnessing. Upon the high throne, a silhouette sat enveloped in golden light, utterly silent, radiating a cold and infinite majesty. A single gaze swept down from that light—devoid of any emotion, yet it nearly froze its very soul.

This sheer pressure!

The Defiant Overlord's mind reeled in terror. It had experienced immense pressure in the presence of the Supreme Overlord, but the latter paled drastically when compared to the golden figure before it.

Is this the Human Emperor?

Though a definitive answer had already formed in its mind, the Defiant Overlord kept questioning itself, seemingly unwilling to believe what its eyes revealed. In Solas's intelligence reports, the description of the Human Emperor had been ambiguous; the Rangdan Council had merely assumed him to be an enhanced iteration of a Primarch.

Only upon witnessing the Human Emperor in person did the Defiant Overlord realize how utterly laughable the Council's prior calculations had been!

Why is this so? A tumultuous sea of questions flooded its thoughts. How can such a powerful entity exist within the boundaries of the material universe? Is he truly a human?

"The Human Emperor," its peculiar accent sounded immensely heavy as its frame sank to the floor of the cell. The Defiant Overlord fixed its crimson eyes upon the base of the throne, the last traces of contempt entirely wiped from its gaze.

The Emperor! An inconceivable man. For such an entity to be born among mankind—did this species truly carry a cosmic destiny?

He possessed the power to elevate this race to a terrifying, unimaginable height.
