Chapter 2 - Awake to Emptiness

When I opened my eyes, everything felt blurred, like I was floating between two worlds.

The first thing I saw was Marcus—my dearest friend—sitting beside me with his mother. They were listening carefully to the doctor's words.

The moment I moved, Marcus almost jumped from his chair. His voice cracked with excitement.

"Doctor, my friend is awake! He's finally awake! Please… just check him. Tell me he's alright."

The doctor walked closer, shining a light into my eyes.

"Do you feel any pain in your head?"

I shook my head slowly. "No."

"Any problem with your vision?" he asked again.

"No, nothing like that," I replied.

The doctor sighed in relief. "You lost a lot of blood from your head. You've been unconscious for fifteen days. It's a miracle you woke up."

Fifteen days… I repeated in my mind, stunned. My heart sank.

I looked at Marcus, then at his mother, and whispered, "Where are my mom and dad?"

They went silent. Marcus lowered his eyes. His mother pressed her lips together but said nothing.

A bitter smile touched my lips. "I see… they didn't come, not even once."

Marcus clenched his fists. "I went to your mansion myself. I told your father you were in the hospital, fighting for your life. Do you know what he said? He said he was busy… that I should handle these 'small matters' myself."

I wasn't shocked. Not really. I had been ignored my entire life. Maybe that's why betrayal never surprised me anymore.

That was also the reason I could never believe in marriage… or love.

In school, even when girls tried to confess to me, I rejected them coldly. What was the point? I had seen enough of love's ugliness at home.

My father—respected politician by day, ruthless man by night—kept countless affairs. My mother found out, and their endless fights burned into my childhood. Now, growing older, I understood. Love was just another lie.

As I drifted into these thoughts, Marcus gently broke the silence.

"You'll have a few more tests today. If the reports look fine, they'll let you out tomorrow or the day after."

By evening, the reports came back. Nothing unusual. No damage the doctors could find. The next morning, Marcus personally took me home.

But even as I stepped into the world again, I knew one thing for certain—

I hadn't just woken up from an accident.

Something inside me had changed forever.
