Dance Lessons
Chuseok was over.
So, what was left now?
"Ha, do I really have to go?"
[Yes, of course you do. It wasn't easy to get such a famous instructor.]
I let out a deep sigh at my manager's answer.
Right, dance lessons were what remained.
I felt it during the last shoot with my cousin too, but really, I'm hopeless when it comes to using my body….
"Wait, you said a famous person?"
[Yes, someone who appears on TV often. Since we've gotten a bit of attention recently, I think they became interested.]
Oh… being famous must also mean they're skilled, right?
That makes me a little excited.
"What's their name?"
[I heard it's Lee Yer-yeong. Do you know her?]
"Come on, how would I know?"
Maybe my cousin would, but me? No way.
I've said it before—didn't I fail to recognize Moon Chang-sik himself?
Later I learned that was something to be proud of, actually.
[I figured as much. Anyway, please don't be late.]
"Fine, I got it."
The dance lessons were set for once a week.
The place was a bit far, but once a week was manageable.
From the group chat, it looked like the other members were a bit excited, but I wasn't so sure.
What if I really stand out? What if everyone else follows well and I'm the only one who can't… ugh, forget it.
I have to go tomorrow anyway—should I study ahead a bit?
In this internet age, there must be at least some beginner dance tutorials.
If I learn a bit beforehand, maybe I'll be called a prodigy at first… nah, forget it.
Tok—
I tossed my phone onto the bed and flopped down with it.
Even if I practiced a little, I'd get exposed anyway.
I should just go and work hard.
Hard work never fails. All I need to do is manage well enough for the year-end live performance.
Besides, they said the instructor is pretty famous, right? She'll probably teach us well.
I don't know.
I'll just think of it as being dead for five hours, that'll make it easier.
So, like always, I left tomorrow to tomorrow's me and closed my eyes in peace.
***
And then the next day.
I left home to head to the dance studio I'd been given directions to.
"Woof!"
Since it was a weekday, Boksil, who usually stayed in the yard instead of the living room, immediately came running over, but I quickly dodged left and right.
"Woof?"
"Boksil, can't you see these pants?"
Normally, I'd just play along for a bit before leaving, but today I was wearing black training pants. Not an option.
I couldn't show up covered in fur.
If they were another color, fine—but if that white puffball got on my black pants, it'd be obvious.
So, after dodging, I left behind a slightly dejected Boksil and hurried out the gate.
Sorry, Boksil. I'll take you for a walk later.
Once outside the gate, I saw a woman at the end of the alley who stood out immediately.
A head taller than the men walking around her.
…Every time I see her, I think—shouldn't she have been an athlete with that physique?
Not that I should talk, but it feels like a waste for someone like her to just sit at home on the computer.
"Soo-hyun, you're here?"
As I approached, Maho noticed me first and waved.
I waved back and walked with her toward the subway station.
Normally, I'd have gone separately, but since our houses were close, we decided to go together.
"We just have to ride Line 1 straight, so it's convenient."
"Others didn't get so lucky, but we did."
Yeah, it was nice not needing to transfer. Transfers are such a hassle.
And since it wasn't rush hour, we got to sit comfortably on the train.
Still, wow—she really draws stares.
Everyone who got on or off glanced at her at least once.
I was used to it by now, but it still made me a little self-conscious.
Honestly, if I were a guy, I'd probably glance too, so I couldn't blame them.
Anyway, after riding under all those stares, we got off the subway and saw a group of girls up ahead.
Just an ordinary group—except one person really stood out.
Roa.
How could a tracksuit look that hip?
I guess it's true—your face completes the fashion.
"Oh? They're here."
"Over here!"
As I stared, they noticed us too and started waving like crazy.
"Unni, our members are over there."
"Oh… right. Let's hurry."
Despite her wide field of vision, Maho had been looking in the wrong direction until I pointed them out. Then she waved back too.
Come to think of it, this was the first time all of us gathered since the Miro 24-hour event, wasn't it?
With dance lessons now, I guess we'd be meeting regularly.
"Wow, Soo-hyun, you're prettier every time I see you."
As we got closer, Mile gushed over me.
"Did you get prettier than before?"
"Of course, your face is literally glowing."
Geez, nothing comes from flattery like that.
Still, I had to respond in kind.
"That's odd. I didn't think there was any room left to get prettier."
I tilted my head seriously, as if puzzled. Mile scrunched up her face like she'd just seen something disgusting.
"Wow… can I punch you just once?"
"Hey, calm down! No fists!"
For a moment, Mile almost raised her hand, but Anna, the eldest, stopped her quickly.
That's what you get for starting it first.
After that little incident, we left the station and headed for the building the company had told us about.
"This is it?"
"Yeah, they said the basement here."
The building looked fairly big and clean.
Well, we weren't buying, just renting, so I guess they picked something nice.
It was one of The Six's strengths—not skimping on things like this.
"This should be it, right?"
"Wow, I'm nervous."
"Me too."
Everyone had looked calm, but once inside, they started showing signs of nerves.
Only Anna and Roa still looked fine.
As for me—I was the most nervous of all.
Going down to the basement, we finally saw the dance studio.
There were two rooms, A and B. Ours was A, right?
"We go left."
Following Anna, who was guiding us with her phone, we reached Room A.
"Alright, going in."
The frosted glass door swung open, revealing the space inside.
Right at the entrance was a shoe rack, and one entire wall was covered with mirrors.
It was clearly a dance practice room.
At the far end, a woman who had been moving busily turned her gaze toward us as the door opened.
"Oh?! Nice to meet you all!"
From the reaction, this must be the instructor the company arranged.
Maybe it was because she really was famous, but she gave off the aura of someone who took great care of herself.
Her body—well, she was a dancer, so that was a given. Even her skin was flawless, without a single blemish.
"I've been waiting for you!"
The instructor smiled brightly and strode confidently toward us.
"I've been looking forward to this so much…."
She began making eye contact with each of us one by one, starting with Anna in the front. Then her eyes met mine.
"Uh…."
Her expression suddenly grew complicated.
"By any chance… are you from the Celestial Project?"
With that, silence filled the room.
And then—
"Pffft."
"Hahaha!"
The members suddenly burst out laughing.
What's so funny?
From Anna, who was laughing the loudest, to Roa, who let out an awkward chuckle, they were all cracking up.
Now the instructor just looked more confused.
"Ah, yes, we're the Celestial Project. I'm Miro."
I finally stepped in to answer, and the instructor's face shifted from confusion to surprise.
"Wow… I thought actual idols had shown up."
"We get that a lot."
"And I'm sure you really do…."
Tsk, the way she said it so seriously made me feel a little embarrassed.
"Haha, we're in your care today."
"Oh no, that's what I should say. Please, come inside."
Honestly, I'd been a little worried she might have a harsh personality, but it turned out the instructor was friendly and cheerful.
"Well then, let's take off our coats and start with some stretching. We may have plenty of class hours, but the schedule is short, so let's learn intensively!"
After a brief stretch, the first lesson began. Since it was the first day, it was very simple.
"Alright—left foot, right foot, just follow along like this."
The instructor demonstrated slowly with basic movements, and we just had to copy her.
…This wasn't so bad.
Since it was just the basics, it wasn't hard to follow.
But little by little, the number of moves we had to memorize grew.
"Okay, when the left foot goes here, the right foot goes this way… and your body always turns this way."
At first, it was easy.
All I had to do was follow, right? Even memorizing wasn't so bad.
I mean, if it's about using my head, I have some confidence.
But… as time went on, the moves piled up, and the physical strain grew.
"Alright, left foot…."
"Hff…."
"Now right foot…."
"Haaagh…."
With every combination, sweat poured down like rain, and my vision blurred.
Was dancing… always this exhausting? Dancers deserved my respect.
To think they handled this kind of intense exercise on a daily basis.
"Uh… Miro?"
Seriously, they were amazing.
Meanwhile, even basic practice was this tough for someone like me….
"Excuse me?"
"Huh? Yes?"
When had she called me? Now that I noticed, everyone was staring at me.
Haa… never seen someone exhausted before?
But no—while the others were a bit out of breath, none of them looked half-dead like me.
…Why? Was I really this bad?
"Could you come over here for a moment?"
Seeing how badly I was struggling, the instructor called me to the side of the room.
"Please wait here for a bit."
With that, she stepped out.
What's this about…? Was there some trick?
Unless she brought back some kind of stamina elixir only dancers knew about, my energy wasn't coming back anytime soon….
So, while I waited, I sat down with a sports drink to catch my breath.
Phew, resting made it a bit better.
Honestly, I just wanted to lie down. My heart was still pounding, and my breathing hadn't steadied—looked like I needed more rest.
But soon, the instructor returned.
"Sorry to keep you waiting."
"No, you were quick."
"I just had to run to my car… here, take this."
I accepted the item she'd brought back.
"Oh, a jump rope?"
What she handed me was a jump rope.
Why bring this?
"Well… your stamina's really lacking, so I think you need to build it up before we focus on moves."
"Ah, ha ha…."
Oh—was that… actually good news?
"…Got it."
And so, during my very first class, I was pulled out and told to skip rope in the corner.
…At least this, I could manage.
