Chapter 1 - What the Heck is That?

"Kit, come down here NOW!"

I slowly opened my eyes, still groggy from being woken from a great dream.

I rolled out of bed, losing my glasses as I went, wondering what I could have done now.

I walked down the spiral staircase to the kitchen while thinking about what I had done in the last 24 hours.

Well. I clogged the air vents, I broke the droid, and I shattered my mom's favorite mug. Yeah, I'm done for.

I reached the kitchen ready for the lecture.

"Kit Tyro, who do you think you are!?" His mom shouted.

"Based on your tone, I am not going to answer that." I said.

Stupid. Why would you say that?

"You are such a disappointment." His dad chimed in.

"What? What did I do?" I asked, confused.

Normally, when I did something bad, my mom would get a little mad and give me a stern lecture. But this time, she was actually really mad. None of the stuff I did was bad enough for this level of anger!

"Don't play dumb. We both know you moved the box in the basement." His mom said.

"What box? We have a box? What's in it?"

The questions bubbled to the surface before he could control them.

"Well, clearly we have to show you before you can quit playing with us."

My parents led me to the off-limits basement. The door creak open from age. As we walked down the steps, I could smell old and maybe even rotting wood. I could also feel something down here. Some sort of presence. But it wasn't like any other I'd ever felt before. I shivered. I didn't know if it was from fear or just that the basement was a little cold. My parents turned on the lights, and I could see an old wooden chest in the center of the large room.

I will admit I have felt the urge to come down here, but I didn't. It's the one rule I haven't broken. But I guess now coming down here ruined that streak.

"Any explanation?" My mom said sarcastically.

I decided she meant that as a rhetorical question, so I shifted the topic.

"What the heck is that?"
