Chapter 2
I sat nervously in the waiting area, my fingers tapping lightly against my knees. Around me, several girls strutted in with flashy makeup and short, glittery clothes, like they were here to audition for a club instead of an office job. I swallowed hard, tugging at my simple blouse.
Do I even look like I belong here?
One by one, the girls went inside for their interviews, only to return minutes later with disappointed faces. My stomach twisted tighter with each passing second.
Finally, I heard a voice.
"Miss Jessica."
I looked up. It was him—the assistant from yesterday. My heart skipped.
What is he doing here?
"Yes," I replied, trying to sound calm.
"Come in, please," he said politely, holding the door open.
So… he's part of the interview panel? Great. Just great.
I stepped inside, my knees suddenly weak. The sharp-jawed man from yesterday was there too, sitting confidently behind the desk. His eyes flicked toward me, and I instantly felt small under his gaze.
"Have a seat," he said, his voice firm but smooth.
"Thank you," I murmured, lowering myself into the chair. My palms were already sweaty.
The assistant spoke first. "I'm Mr. Lee, the CEO's assistant. And this," he gestured toward the man beside him, "is our CEO, Mr. Jason."
Jason. So that's his name.
I forced myself to nod politely, though my chest felt like it was about to burst.
Jason leaned forward slightly. "So, Miss Jessica, do you have any skills?" His voice was calm, but his gaze felt like it could slice through lies.
My throat tightened. "I… I can draw. I mean, I graduated as a graphic designer."
Their shared glance made me shrink. It was the kind of look that said, What are you doing here then?
Unlucky me. If this doesn't work, Hason will kill me.
Mr. Lee continued, "What was your previous job, Miss Jessica?"
"I… I was a shopkeeper," I admitted quietly.
"Oh, I see." He scribbled something on his notepad.
Jason said nothing, only studied me with that unreadable expression, which was somehow worse.
Then Mr. Lee leaned forward. "As the CEO's assistant, you'll be expected to move into his residence and be available twenty-four-seven. Do you agree?"
My jaw nearly dropped. What the heck? Twenty-four-seven? Is he a vampire or something? Doesn't he sleep?
"Miss Jessica?" The assistant's voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
"Oh—of course," I blurted out, forcing a smile. "I mean… I love working."
Jason's eyebrow lifted slightly, as though he could see right through my act.
"Great," Mr. Lee said smoothly. "We'll send you an email or give you a call if you're hired."
"Oh… okay," I said, my voice softer now.
Jason finally spoke again, his voice steady and final. "Thank you for coming, Ms. Jessica."
I quickly stood, bowed slightly, and hurried out of the room, my heart hammering.
Once outside, I let out a long breath I hadn't realized I was holding. My legs carried me all the way home in a daze, replaying every second of that interview. By the time I reached the front door and stepped inside, exhaustion and nerves had settled deep into my bones.
When I got home, the place was quiet—Rose and Maria weren't there. My body was too drained to think, so I collapsed on the bed and drifted into sleep.
The next morning, I was halfway through cooking breakfast when my phone rang. The caller ID made my heart skip. MECH Corporation.
I froze. My hands shook as I picked it up.
"Hello?"
"Ms. Jessica?" It was a familiar voice.
"Yeah, it's me," I said cautiously.
"This is Mr. Lee. I want to congratulate you—you have been chosen to be the CEO's second assistant."
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe. Then I actually jumped.
Rose rushed in from the other room. "What? What happened?"
Before I could answer, Mr. Lee continued. "Please make your luggage ready. You'll be moving into the CEO's residence today. We already have your address from your application. The driver is waiting downstairs."
My mouth fell open. What? Moving in today? Can't I at least take a nap before becoming someone's 24/7 assistant? And he already sent a driver? Is this man running a company or a kidnapping business?
"Oh… okay," I said quickly, trying to sound professional.
"Once you've placed your luggage in your room at the CEO's house, please report directly to the company. The driver will bring you."
"I will. And thank you for… hiring me," I said.
"Show us how hardworking you are, Ms. Jessica," Mr. Lee said before ending the call.
The moment I dropped the phone, I screamed. "Girls! I got hired!"
Rose ran in and grabbed my hands, and we both jumped around like crazy. "No way! You actually did it?" she laughed.
Maria joined in with a grin. "Good for you, girl."
"You two eat your breakfast. I need to pack—my driver is literally waiting downstairs," I said, rushing to my room.
Maria pouted dramatically. "Are they really going to take away my sweet, great cooker sister?"
I smirked, zipping my bag. "Don't worry. I'll be back… after I get that file."
Rose's smile softened. "I hope you find it soon."
Within minutes, I had packed my clothes and a few essentials. Dragging my suitcase down the stairs, I spotted the sleek black car waiting outside. The driver stepped out, bowing slightly.
"Ms. Jessica?" he asked politely.
"Yes, that's me," I said, still half in shock.
"Please, allow me," he said, taking my luggage and placing it carefully in the trunk. His manners made me wonder just how strict this CEO must be if even the driver acted like royalty was involved.
The ride to Jason's house felt surreal. The neighborhood screamed money—tall gates, spotless streets, and a silence too clean to be real. When we finally pulled up, I nearly choked. His house wasn't a house—it was a freaking mansion.
A maid opened the massive front doors, smiling warmly. "Welcome, Miss Jessica. Please, follow me."
She guided me upstairs and into a beautifully decorated guest room that looked bigger than our entire apartment.
"This will be your room," she said.
"Thank you," I murmured, setting my suitcase down.
After a quick glance around, I didn't let myself rest. Remembering Mr. Lee's instructions, I left the mansion and got back into the car. The driver whisked me straight to MECH Corporation.
By the time we reached the 28th floor, my nerves were back in full swing. I walked briskly to Jason's office. My hand hovered at the door, trembling. I knocked softly, then pushed it open.
"Good morning," I said, forcing a smile.
And there he was—Jason. The man who had fired me before I was even hired.
