I peeked over the edge of the bed. Ivy shot me a frantic look and waved me down. I ducked back to the floor, heart hammering, and stayed out of sight.
The door creaked open.
"Everything okay?" Delilah asked.
"Y-yeah," Ivy stammered. "It's okay. I was… I stubbed my toe."
"You're panting," Delilah noted, sounding concerned. "Are you sure everything is okay?"
"Yeah, yeah." Ivy exhaled, trying to sound normal. "Everything's fine. And thanks for knocking, Mom."
"I thought you'd be in trouble," Delilah chuckled awkwardly. "Is Evan gone?"
"Y-yeah. He is gone. You should've at least waited for him to leave before going to bed, Mom. That was rude."
"I… I was just sleepy, honey." Delilah fake-coughed. "Anyway, good night, honey."
"Night, Mom."
"I love you."
Ivy let out a long breath. "I love you too."
The door clicked shut.
I waited a couple of seconds, then stood up, brushing myself off with a quiet chuckle. "These two…"
