Chapter 11 - the dragon’s omen

The colossal gates of Sraverjek's ancient sanctuary towered before Aric like silent sentinels guarding a long-forgotten truth. The intricate carvings of dragons intertwined with celestial runes shimmered faintly in the moonlight, as if alive. Every breath Aric took felt heavy, the air thick with an aura of ancient power.

Beside him, Selene's eyes flickered with cautious anticipation. Even the emperor, Cobard, looked uneasythough his posture remained regal and unyielding.

"Are you sure the dragon will grant us an audience?" Selene whispered.

Aric nodded. "He's watched over Salverdine for centuries. If anyone understands the shards and the Broken Flame, it's him."

With a deep breath, Aric stepped forward and pressed his palm against the gates. A surge of heat coursed through him, and the gates groaned open slowly, revealing a cavernous hall bathed in a soft, ethereal glow.

Inside the Sanctuary the interior was vast beyond comprehension. Massive stone pillars stretched upward into darkness, adorned with ancient glyphs that pulsed with faint light. At the far end, Sraverjek rested curled atop a massive stone dais a dragon of iridescent scales that shimmered from gold to emerald to sapphire with every slight movement.

His eyes, ancient and all knowing, fixed on Aric as he approached.

"Bearer of the Broken Flame," the dragon's voice rumbled in Aric's mind, echoing like thunder through the sanctuary. "You walk a path riddled with fire and shadow. Why have you come?"

Aric steadied himself. "Kaelen wields shards of the original flame. His power grows, and I fear the empire will fall if we don't stop him."

Sraverjek's gaze seemed to pierce his very soul. "The flame was broken to protect the world, but power of this magnitude always seeks to return. The shards scattered, waiting for one strong enough to reunite them or destroy all that stands in their way."

Selene stepped forward. "What can we do? How do we stop Kaelen?"

The dragon's eyes softened, almost wistful. "You must seek the Flameforge a place where the shards can be reforged or destroyed. But beware: not all flames can be tamed."

Cobard clenched his fists. "Where is this Flameforge?"

Sraverjek's tail flicked, sending a ripple through the air. "Far to the west, beyond the Valley of Echoes. But the journey will test more than your strength it will challenge your very will."

Sraverjek lowered his massive head closer to Aric, the warmth of his breath like a gentle fire.

"There is more, young flame-bearer. Your power is tied to the Voidflame, but it is only part of the whole. Within you lies the seed of the Paragon a realm beyond Grandmaster, a level of mastery that few have ever glimpsed."

Aric swallowed hard. "How do I unlock it?"

"The path is fraught with trials. Only through understanding both light and shadow will you ascend. But you must walk carefully for every step forward in power risks losing yourself to the flame's hunger."

With a sweep of his claw, Sraverjek presented Aric with a small, glowing orb a crystallized ember of pure flame.

"Use this wisely. It will guide you when your path grows dark."

Aric accepted the orb, feeling a surge of warmth and strength coursing through him.

As the group prepared to leave, a sudden chill swept the sanctuary. The shadows deepened unnaturally, and a sinister voice slithered through the air.

"You think dragons and emperors can stop what is already coming?"

From the darkness, Kaelen emerged, the Broken Flame shard pulsating with ominous energy.

Aric's hand tightened around the crystallized ember.

"This ends now," he declared.

Kaelen laughed, a sound like cracking ice.

"You are but a flicker compared to the inferno I will become."

The battle reignited in the heart of the sanctuary black flames against iridescent scales, swords clashing with raw elemental fury. The fate of the empire, the shards, and the flame itself hung in the balance.

The CliffhangerAs the clash reached its peak, the sanctuary trembled violently.

The ground cracked open beneath them, revealing a cavern glowing with an unnatural light the very core of the Flameforge, awakened after centuries.

A voice echoed from the depths, ancient and terrible:

"Only the true flame bearer may pass… but beware the price of fire."
