Chapter 4 - Colliding Worlds

"Watch where you're going!" I burst out, my voice laced with disbelief. "Do you have eyes in your head?" My hands instinctively dove for the scattered papers, each crumpled sheet adding fuel to my anger.

The man's gaze swept over me with a cold indifference that ignited my fury further. "Careful there," he retorted, his tone dripping with condescension. "Someone might mistake you for a tornado." With a nonchalant shrug, he stepped over the paper chaos and continued down the hall, leaving me fuming in his wake.

My gaze burned into his retreating figure as I struggled to gather the scattered papers. My hands shook uncontrollably, a symphony of rage and embarrassment echoing within me. His words, a venomous sting, reverberated in my ears. How could he have spoken to me like that? With a forceful exhale, I attempted to quell the tempest raging within.

There was work to be done, and this idiot was not worth a single wasted moment of my time. Resolutely, I returned to my desk, the memory of the encounter already igniting a fierce determination to complete the report.

I forced myself to concentrate on the data, but my mind kept wandering back to the rude man. Just as I was beginning to find my rhythm again, a sharp knock interrupted my focus. "Come in," I called out, my voice a bit sharper than intended.

The door swung open, revealing Ella, her bright smile instantly softening the tension in the room. "Hey there, workaholic," she teased, strolling in. "I was wondering if you were still alive there."

"Barely," I replied, forcing a smile. "I ran into a real idiot out there in the hall." I recounted the encounter, my voice filled with disbelief. "I mean, who does he think he is?"

Ella laughed, her infectious humor starting to lift my spirits. "Oh, honey, don't let him get to you. Some people are just walking disasters," she laughed "Forget about him and focus on your report. You're almost done, right?"

"Actually, I'm almost there," I confessed, relief washing over me as I looked at the nearly filled pages. "Just a few more tweaks and it's done."

Ella clapped her hands excitedly. "Perfect! Then we can finally escape this place. Let's go home!" She grabbed a nearby chair and spun it around, swinging her legs back and forth. "I know just the perfect thing to relax with after a long day."

I couldn't help but smile at her enthusiasm. "Sounds like the perfect plan," I agreed, already looking forward to the peace and quiet of home. With a final glance at the report, I saved my work and stood up, ready to leave the office behind.

We gathered our belongings, the weight of the day seeming to lift with each item packed. As we stepped out into the fresh evening air, a wave of relief washed over me. Ella linked her arm through mine as we walked towards the parking lot, the promise of relaxation and good company filling the air.

"Ready to hit the road?" Ella asked with a mischievous glint in her eye.

"Absolutely," I replied, eager to escape the confines of the office. We climbed into her car, the air conditioning a welcome relief from the evening heat. As Ella pulled out of the parking lot, I leaned back in my seat, closing my eyes and letting the rhythm of the road lull me into a state of relaxation.

The city lights began to blur into a soft glow as we drove, the quiet hum of the car providing a soothing backdrop to my thoughts. Ella's soft humming filled the car with a gentle melody,

And I found myself drifting off into a state of tranquil contentment. The weight of the day seemed to melt away with each passing mile, replaced by a sense of anticipation for the evening ahead.

Ella's car finally rolled to a stop in front of the house. The warm, inviting glow from the kitchen windows painted a comforting picture of home. We stepped out into the cool evening air, the crispness of the night a welcome relief from the stuffy car.

We stepped into the house, the familiar scent of baking cookies filling the air. Grandma emerged from the kitchen, her apron tied around her waist. "Welcome home, dearies," she greeted us warmly. "How did your first day go, Ravenna?" Her eyes held a mixture of curiosity and pride.

"It was fantastic, Grandma!" I exclaimed, my excitement bubbling over. "I aced the interview and started work right away!" A wide grin spread across my face.

"Time for some rest, you two," Grandma announced, her smile warm and inviting. "Head to your rooms and freshen up." We nodded in agreement, already feeling the day's exhaustion creeping in. Ascending the stairs, I retreated to my room, eager to unwind.

The bathroom was a welcome sanctuary. I peeled off my work clothes, feeling the day's grime and stress slip away with each item. The shower was a cascade of warmth, massaging away the tension in my muscles. The water rinsed away the day's events, leaving me refreshed and ready to face the evening.

I wrapped myself in a plush white towel, feeling the cool fabric against my damp skin. After applying a generous amount of lotion, I slipped into a navy blue wide-leg palazzo and a soft white tank top. The comfortable outfit felt like a gentle embrace after the long day.

I decided to join them downstairs. As I made my way down the stairs, I collided with someone, sending a jolt of surprise through me. Looking up, my heart skipped a beat. Standing before me was the same arrogant man who had bumped into me at the office. A wave of disbelief washed over me as I tried to comprehend his presence in my grandpa's house. How on earth had he ended up here?

"What are you doing here?" The words escaped both our lips simultaneously. Our gazes locked, a silent battle of confusion and surprise. I was at a loss for words, my mind racing to find a logical explanation for this absurd situation.

The tension between us hung heavy in the air when Lucas abruptly opened his bedroom door. My gaze snapped to him, offering a brief respite from the standoff with the arrogant stranger. Before I could process the interruption, the man spoke, his voice dripping with disdain, "Who is she, and what is she doing here?"

My astonishment was palpable. "And what are you doing here?" I retorted, my voice laced with disbelief. "This is my grandfather's house."

Lucas, sensing the escalating tension, burst out laughing. "Relax, guys," he said, his laughter echoing through the room. "Ravenna, this is Nathan, your cousin. And Nathan, this is Ravenna."

My jaw dropped. "Nathan? But I thought he was in Italy on a business trip."

Lucas nodded. "Surprise! He flew in today. Didn't want to spoil it for anyone."

"I didn't expect the 'mighty Nathan' everyone raves about to be such an arrogant jerk," I spat out, my anger flaring. Lucas looked between us, clearly bewildered. "You don't know him, Rav," he defended, but his voice lacked conviction.

Nathan smirked, his arrogance reaching new heights. "She's the clumsy I told you about," he sneered.

I was stunned. "Me? clumsy? You're the jerk who barged into my life twice in one day!" My voice was rising, and I could feel my temper spiraling out of control.

Nathan stepped closer, his eyes glinting with a dangerous intensity. "Watch your mouth, little one," he growled, his fingers roughly lifting my chin. His gaze burned into mine, a silent threat hanging in the air. "Don't play with fire," he warned, his voice low and menacing.

Lucas stepped between us, his arms outstretched in a calming gesture. "Alright, break it up," he said, his voice firm. "Let's head downstairs. Everyone's wondering where we've disappeared to." Turning to Nathan, he added, "Come on, let's go. Everyone's missed you."

We descended the stairs, the soft padding of our feet echoing through the house. The living room was bathed in warm light, and Grandma, Aunt Amelia, and Aunt Sophia were seated in a cozy arrangement.

Their heads turned as we entered, their expressions shifting from surprise to delight when they saw Nathan. Aunt Amelia was the first to react, enveloping him in a warm embrace. "You rascal! Why didn't you tell us you were coming?" she scolded affectionately.

Nathan returned the hug, a genuine smile playing on his lips. "Wanted to surprise you," he replied with a gentle smile, his voice deep and unwavering.

Aunt Sophia pulled Nathan into a warm embrace. "Oh, Nathan, we've missed you terribly," she exclaimed, her voice filled with affection. Her gaze lingered on him, her eyes softening. "You seem to have lost a bit of weight. Have you been taking care of yourself?"

Nathan chuckled at her concern. "Don't worry, Aunt Sophia, I've been eating plenty," he assured her. Turning his attention to Grandma, he bent down and kissed her hand respectfully. "I've missed you dearly, Grandma," he said, his voice filled with sincerity.

Grandma returned the gesture, her eyes twinkling with happiness. "You rascal," she scolded affectionately. "Where have you been? We expected a phone call at least."

Nathan shrugged, a sheepish grin spreading across his face. "You know how busy I've been. But I'm here now, and that's all that matters."

Watching Nathan interact with his family, I was astonished by the transformation. The arrogant facade he'd presented earlier had vanished, replaced by a genuine warmth and affection.

Aunt Sophia noticed me standing apart. "Come join us, Ravenna," she invited, her voice gentle. Turning to Nathan, she added, "Have you two met?"

"Yes, Aunt," I replied, forcing a smile. The memory of our earlier encounter flashed through my mind. "It was a... memorable meeting," I added, my voice dripping with sarcasm.

Nathan's gaze met mine, a smirk playing on his lips. "Memorable indeed," he agreed, his tone laced with a challenge.

I slipped into the empty seat beside Grandma, Aunt Amelia, and Aunt Sophia, while Nathan and Lucas took up positions on the opposite side of the couch.

Aunt Sophia turned to me, her eyes filled with gentle curiosity. "How did your first day go, dear?" she inquired.

A warm smile spread across my face as I recounted the events of the day. "It was fantastic, actually," I replied, my enthusiasm evident. "I aced the interview and started working right away."

A chorus of approving murmurs and exclamations filled the room. Grandma's eyes sparkled with pride. "That's wonderful news, dear!" she exclaimed. "I knew you'd do well."

Conversation flowed easily, a mix of laughter and shared stories. I found myself relaxing in the warm embrace of family.

Just as I was starting to feel completely at ease, the front door creaked open. Grandpa entered the room, his face etched with a tired but welcoming smile. Spotting Nathan, his eyes lit up.

With a hearty laugh, he strode over and enveloped his grandson in a warm embrace. "You young rascal," he chuckled, ruffling Nathan's hair. "It's good to see you."

Grandpa turned his attention to me, his eyes twinkling with curiosity. "And how about you, my dear? How did your first day go?" His voice was gentle, filled with the warmth of a grandfather's love.

I smiled, feeling a surge of confidence. "It was a great day, Grandpa," I replied. "Everything went smoothly."

A protective glint appeared in his eyes. "Did anyone give you any trouble?" he asked, his voice firm.

I chuckled, meeting Nathan's gaze before replying to Grandpa. "Don't worry, Grandpa. No one messes with me," I assured him, my tone light but firm.

We settled into a comfortable silence, the gentle hum of conversation filling the room. Laughter, shared anecdotes, and the clinking of teacups created a harmonious atmosphere. It was in these quiet moments, surrounded by loved ones, that I truly felt a sense of belonging.

The day's events, with all its ups and downs, seemed to fade into insignificance as I basked in the warmth of family.

Turning to Grandpa, my voice trembled slightly, "Grandpa, I have something to ask you," I began, my heart pounding in my chest. Everyone's attention turned to me, their faces a mixture of curiosity and concern.

Grandpa nodded encouragingly. "Why didn't Dad ever mention you or bring me here?" I blurted out, the question I'd been longing to ask finally leaving my lips.

Everyone went still.

And I waited—for answers.
